AUTOMOTIVE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (RED SEAL) In all provinces and territories except Quebec and British Columbia, an Inter-Provincial (IP) Certificate is required An available apprenticeship program takes a minimum of four years It combines ten months shop work and about two months in-school training in each of the four years Most apprentices must undergo 7200 hours of training before they can complete the IP examination ASE certifications are currently used on a voluntary basis, but an IP Certificate is still required Other licensing of automotive techs may be required, in cases such as environmental substances, liquefied petroleum gas, or steam operators Automotive Technology: Principles, Diagnosis, and Service, 3rd Edition By James D Halderman 41 ©©2008 2009Pearson PearsonEducation, Education,Inc Inc Pearson PearsonPrentice PrenticeHall Hall- -Upper UpperSaddle SaddleRiver, River,NJ NJ07458 07458 UPDATE TRAINING All ASE certifications expire after five years and the technician needs to take a recertification test to remain certified Experts recommend that each tech should have at least 40 hours update training each year Classes can be found through many sources: Parts stores, warehouse distributors, local colleges and training companies offer update training classes throughout the year State or regional associations offer update conferences An example is the Automotive Service Association Visit them at www.asashop.org Other training is listed on the International Automotive Technicians Network Visit them at www.iatn.net Automotive
