THANH HOA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING LE HOAN UPPER SECONDARY SCHOOL INITIATIVE EXPERIENCE NAME OF THEME APPLYING SOME TECHNIQUES TO TEACH NEW WORDS TO HIGH SHOOL STUDENTS The implementation: Le Thi Hoe Position : Teacher Initiative experience of area: English THANH HOA :2020 THE TABLE OF CONTENTS Contents INTRODUCTION 1.1 The reasons for choosing topic 1.2 The aims of study 1.3 The object of research and application of innitiative 1.4 The methodology THE RESEARCH CONNTENTS 2.1 The rationale for the initiative 2.2 The problem states before applying this initiative 2.3 The improved solutions 2.4.Applying new method 2.5 The result of applying new methods CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS 3.1 Conclusion 3.2 Recommendations page 3 6-11 11-14 15 16 16 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Reasons for choosing the topic Today, English has truly become an international language, many countries around the world speak, understand and use English in many areas There are more than 350 million people who can speak English as their mother tongue, and a similar number of people use English as their second language English is the most important means of communication in many countries around the world Approximately 75% of international correspondence is written in English English is also the primary language of 44 countries In many countries, English is the language of business, commerce and technology, new knowledge, inventions and discoveries in countries spread to other countries in English for the benefit of the community Moreover, no one can grasp the scientific principles without having knowledge of the language It is, therefore,essential to know, understand and use English in this explosive information age Vietnam is now also an English speaking country with a burst of information, science and technology English has come to Vietnam as a new wind and it has received a lot of applause for the economic upswing and the transformation of the country on the path of integration- "industrialization and modernization" "Knowing a foreign language is an extra life," Max said In any countries, people try to learn the language of the natives to learn, work and communicate A foreign language learner requires hard work and the person is always successful English learners want to use the language they are learning, the first thing they must learn is vocabulary If there is a sufficient amount of words, English speakers can listen, speak, read, and write well on subjects relating to the use of foreign languages at work and in daily life That's why I choose the topic “Applying some techniques to teach new words to high school students” to help them learn and use vocabulary effectively in communication in English 1.2 Aim of the study English has become an important subject in high schools The English language program is designed and taught for almost all subjects from pre-school age to the head Standardization of English in the framework of the European Reference Framework has also been made for both teachers and students at all levels of the country Knowing English is difficult, so understanding and using it as a communication tool for our purposes is much more difficult Particularly for rural students New pupils with new subjects This is a new, challenging, alien and new subject in which students have access to another, unfamiliar culture That requires the teacher to innovate methods to improve the overall quality In classroom teaching activities, vocabulary practice is an extremely important part of a unit.Thus,how to do? This initiative works to help students learn and use new words more actively,and more excitedly In order to improve the pronunciation and memory of students, to help students less passive in learning, is the basic foundation for higher units of knowledge Through vocabulary teaching helps students clearly see the purpose of learning vocabulary well that will help them while learning and manipulating in specific situations At the same time contributing to improving the quality of students is quite good With that concern, as a teacher who have taught English for many years, I would like to give some ideas on how to help students at Le Hoan upper secondary school practice and use vocabulary in an effective way 1.3 Object of research and application of innovations The initiative applies to students in grade 11 of Le Hoan high school in the introduction of the new words Methodology: Applying some new techniques to teach vocabulary in the classroom to help students access knowledge by participating in some games to practice and memorize the vocabulary most effectively 1.4 Research Methodology In order to meet the requirements of teaching and learning foreign languages - English - each teacher needs to study to find the appropriate method for transferring knowledge according to innovation requirements To achieve the ultimate goal of teaching foreign languages is: Learners are able to apply knowledge thoroughly in communication (listening, speaking, reading, writing and using the language) By directly teaching English in high school classes, as well as through classroom attendance and through the evaluation of student learning outcomes, I find that most students are initially interested in learning.Then,they understand and apply good knowledge.Using the vocabulary they have learnt in English speaking situations is a difficult task Students can only pronounce and understand the vocabulary and semantics in the class, but forget about it immediately after class Students can only re-pronounce the teacher's instructions This leads to the loss of knowledge and distraction that occurs during the learning process of the student That causes the learner to have the fear of studying, not accepting the paper, lacking in using the knowledge of the learned lessons and not actively receiving the next lesson,which lead to learning high results To solve these difficulties for learners and trainers in the framework of this initiative, I have used a number of methods such as research methodology to build theoretical basis, Information gathering; Statistical methods, data processing "Appyling some techniques to teach new words to students." 2 RESEARCH CONTENTS 2.1 Rationale for the initiative In recent years, Thanh Hoa department of Education and training as well as Tho Xuan Education and training committee Division is very interested in teaching and learning English They regularly organize contests for the students.In addition, the Department of Education has recently held a seminar on the application of experience idea standards in the organization of active teaching; To renovate the evaluation and evaluation in order to promote the teaching methodology reform for teachers and professional organizations in the inter-school system so as to draw lessons on effectiveness of teaching Most English teachers in the district have tried to learn, to create innovative and effective methods of teaching In the teaching process, teachers have tried to apply flexible teaching methods and teaching techniques to the right students; Students themselves are more interested in the subject, so the quality of teaching as well as learning English is increasing English has become an imprtant subject like other cultural subjects but it is still a difficult subject and not every student is gifted with learning a foreign language to learn it easily Some students, especially individual students, still lack the sense of learning, lack of patience in learning, not keeping pace with new learning methods, still confused in the acquisition and manipulation of knowledge Into practice skills,many children are not aware of the subject matter and not fully understand the meaning of the subject in the international integration period, some children only learn because of curiosity, so it is difficult to learn it effectively.Therefore, they are not serious and have no motivation to learn English properly With the requirement of educational renovation, the school's facilities are more and more fully equipped But because of the lack of uniformity in classrooms (classrooms, tables, chairs, pictures ), it affects the students' absorption, causing them to feel tired and depressed Throughout the years, with new curriculum and textbooks, new methods of teaching and learning, many students are interested in the subject, dynamic in all activities but mostly students are good and good Students are very weak, they are not sure about their knowledge, study passively, wait for results of their friends, many students are afraid to practice speaking in class, afraid to say will be wrong, Some of them have not read well, not even take notes in class or homework, they not have appropriate learning methods This fact shows that students not love,like the subject It is possible to say that vocabulary training plays a very important role in the practice and use of the meaning of the vocabulary Vocabulary practice is always associated with the practice of grammar and listening-speaking-reading-writing skills 2.2 The problem states before applying this initiative a.The result of the School year: 2018-2019 Class Number of students Excellent Good Medium Poor 11A4 45 12 19 10 11A11 41 19 10 During my work and teaching at Le Hoan high school, I apply old methods as well as new methods to teach vocabulary I draw the following comparison chart: Old method: Teachers record new words and annotations on the board Students copy new words and notes into their notebooks The teacher asks students to repeat New method Teachers introduce new words by applying visual methods and techniques Students acquire new words through many forms of life Students practice using new words However, the application of techniques to teaching new words also has difficulties and advantages when implementing new methods a Difficulties: Implementing this new method requires the teacher to spend more time preparing for the appropriate method for each type and type of word - There must be a variety of teaching aids as diverse as sub-tables, pictures, tapes and specimens suitable for knowledge units are different for each lesson, each lesson - The time distribution must be reasonable because the time for the entire article is long to avoid the case of time-consuming loss of other knowledge units b Advantages: In addition to the difficulties mentioned above If the teacher is good, the students' learning is very effective They have the opportunity to improve their knowledge, not boring, passive And more than that, students apply more flexibly in practice 2.3 Improved solutions a Combining word training with sentence patterns One of the most common forms of practice in the controlled period is to attach the sentence patterns, the pattern of that learning Example 1: Combination of sports words with sentence patterns - I like (sports name) - Do you like ( .)? - Can you ( )? Swimming; Table tennis; Football; Volleyball; Running; Jumping Example 2: Practice word training on vehicles with sentence patterns such as: - I go to school / to work by bus by bike by motorbike - Which is better way of traveling in your country? Going by train or by plane? b Check the level of student understanding After introducing the new language, teachers need to conduct rapid application exercises as well as a test of student acceptance This section will continue to introduce other forms of testing for this purpose * Use different semantic exercises Pictures, realias - Definition, synonym - Antonym - Situation - Translation - Example Once introduced, the teacher can look at word comprehension in one of the following forms, but not repeat it for presentation Games: - Slap the board - Rub out and Remember - What and where - Matching * Relevant questions Another form of examination is to ask questions using new words learned For example to check the new word "patient" the teacher may ask: - Who does a patient go to see? - Is the patient a well person? - Have you ever been a patient? - What happened to you? * True-False statements The teacher can make the right and wrong sentences for the student to determine: For example, for "carpenter", the teacher can make right and wrong sentences for the students to determine: A carpenter takes care of the forest A carpenter often works with wood A carpenter uses many tools * Multiple choice items He gives different sentences expressing the meaning of the words so that the students choose the correct definition Example: Drive: - a Move backward and forward - b Make a small hole - c Go head first into water c Word Strengthening During the learning process, teachers can watch word exercises in lessons to reinforce the words they learn Here are some suggestions: * Word wording One of the tricks that makes learning a word easy and memorable is learning the words in clusters There are some exercises under this principle as follows: + Odd one out Teachers for some of the words have a zero in the cluster in some sense Students must choose a non-word group and explain why Ex 1: Odd one out go, bought, run, worn bicycle, cyclo, car, motorbike Thailand, Europe, Africa, Asia Ex 2: Odd one out and give the reasons: For example 2, there are many different ways of grouping in different meanings Teachers can work with students in pairs or in groups, instructing them to make as many possible answers as possible With the above exercise, there will be many different combinations of clusters as follows: all metal: nail, pliers Active: pliers, saw, hammer nail set: nail, hammer, pliers + Where is it? A: Here is an extraword: And can continue until the correct guessing class + Vocabulary network The teacher gives a brief summary of the network with a focus, along with several suggestions, and then asks the students to complete the relay Example: Ways of colecting books * Memorizing technique To help students remember the word for a long time, teachers can use the word retention exercises as follows: + Observe and remember The teacher prepares a number of different artifacts on a tray or a picture with a variety of details (about 8-10 objects) for students to view one or two phases Then the students are not allowed to see again and must rewrite what has been observed Along with this artifact, the teacher can give the student a second look, change the object, position or color After that, students must re-discover what changes are made + Kim’s game Teachers read aloud or write up 10 different words on the board, then delete the board, ask students to rewrite the 10 words they heard or saw + Finding the right word Teacher gives a sentence or situation - Students fill in the blanks If the students fail to so, the teacher may suggest by giving the first or last letter of the word until they find the word to be filled in * Learn words with the lesson The vocabulary learned and practiced is very effective when combined with lessons Some of the following exercises are available: + Before reading the lesson - What is in the text? Or What is Nam’s hobby ? Example:- She likes swimming -His hobby is reading comic books 10 New lesson: Stage/ time Teacher’s activities Students’ activities Pre-reading: (7 minutes) Prereading: (7 minutes) vocabulary - introduce some new words: Accomplished (a) - Listen to the teacher and then discuss in their groups Accompanying - Some students stand up and answer in roles Modest (a) - Predict the meaning of words Avid(a) - work in pairs Admire (v) Discarded (a) Indulge in( phv) While-reading: (20 minutes) Task - Let students open the book and read silently while teacher reads aloud and correctly Whilereading: - Ask students to read themselves and write down some information (20 minutes) - Let students work in pairs to -Keys : the task1 1, tài hoa 2, đệm đàn 3, khiêm tốn 4, say mê ,5,bỏ 6,đam mê Task 7, làm cho bận rộn Task - Let students read all sentences and explain some new words if necessary Task -Ask students to read again and 11 stop at the lines that contains these words to guess the meaning - Work in pairs and answer the questions -Let students individually the task -Work individually -Key: 1, playing the guitar -Call on some students to answer 2,No, he isn’t and explain their answers 3,because he is an accomplished guitarist and he is good at - Listen and correct if needed accompanying people singing with his guitar 4, it is keeping fish 5, he bought some from the shop and collected some from the rice field near his house 6,he is not an avid stamp collector 7, he collects them from discarded envelops his relatives and friends give him 8,local stamps Postreading: 9.he keeps the less common ones inside A small album the common ones he usually gives Post-reading: (10 minutes) -Ask students to close their books away to others of if no one and practise discussing the their wants them he simply throws them away hobbies: - Let students give opinions (10 - Go around to check ,help and minutes) take note of students typical errors 12 Read quickly and find -Call on some students to talk and information to compare with give feedback their partners -Work in small groups of or and take turn to talk about their hobbies: - I would like to propose the school to build functional rooms with projector lamps, projectors, sound equipment, loudspeakers, fans to support the teaching and learning English subjects in secondary schools -
