UNIT 14 THE WORLD CUP Lesson: SPEAKING I. OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to talk about the world cup and the information relating to it. II. TEACHING AIDS textbook, pictures, posters, handouts… III. PROCEDURE 1. Warm – up ( 5’): Game : Reading the numbers. - T divides the class into two teams. - One team’s name is Brazil and the other team is England. - T asks each team to choose a leader. Giving instructions: + T shows a number for each team and asks the team read out the number. + After two teams finish reading the number, T explains Ss that it is a score of a football match and asks Ss to read out the score. + The team who raises his/her hand first will have right to read first. + If the team reads the score correctly, they get one score. + If the team reads the score incorrectly, the other team will read the score. + Each team will have thirty seconds to read the numbers. + T will have the five pairs of numbers for the game. + The team who gets more scores will be the winner. - T will toss up a coin to decide which team will read the number first. Checking instructions: - What do you do first? (reading the number) - How much time do you have to read the number? (thirty seconds) The numbers: 2 4 two - four 5 2 five - two 1 1 one - one 1 0 one - nil 0 0 Nil - nil Lead – in(1’): After the team wins, T gives a photo of the cup of the World Cup to the winner. T asks Ss “do you know the cup?” ( Ss : yes, the cup of World Cup) “Yes, very good, today we are going to talk about the World Cup.” 2. Pre – Speaking (7’): a. Vocabulary( 4’): T runs through the vocabulary. - Host country: Nước chủ nhà. - Runner – Up : Á quân, người về thứ 2. - Defeat(v) : Đánh thắng, vượt qua. - Champion(v): Nhà vô địch, quán quân. - Captain(n) : Đội trưởng. Before starting to do the exercise, T give Ss some sentences which are used to express the opinion(3’) - Which national football team do you like the best? I like … - Can you tell me some reasons why you like the team? I like the team because… 3. While – reading (20’): Activity 1 (10’): Asking and answering the questions. - T asks Ss to open the book. - T calls Ss to read the example in the page 145 Example: + A: Where was the first World Cup held? + B: It was held in Uruguay. + A: Which teams played in the final match? + B: Uruguay and Argentina. + A: Which team became the champion? + B: Uruguay. + A: What was the score of the match? + B: 4 – 2. - T asks Ss to work in pairs and do the task 2 in page 145 in 6 minutes. - T goes around and gives a help if necessary. - After Ss finish the task, T calls some pairs to do the task. - T gives feedbacks and corrects the mistakes. Activity 2 (10’): Talking about the World Cup winner. - T asks Ss to do the task 3 in page 147 individually. - T calls S to read the example. Example: The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. The final match was between Uruguay and Argentina. Uruguay defeated Argentina by 4 to 2. - Ss will have 6 minutes to finish the task. - T goes around and gives a help if necessary. - After Ss finish the task, T calls Ss to do the task. - T gives feedbacks and corrects the mistakes. 4. Post - speaking (9’): Discussing. - T asks Ss to work in pairs (one S will ask and the other will answer) - T asks Ss to discuss the national football team he or she likes the best (using the information in the handouts) - Ss will have six minutes to finish the task. - T asks S to make a model. - T goes around and gives a help if necessary. - After Ss finish, T calls some pair to discuss. - T gives feedbacks and corrects the mistakes Handout: The answer: - The name of national football team you like the best (for example: Brazil, England…) - The name of captain (for example: Cafu, David Beckham…) - Some reasons why you like the team (for example: there are many handsome football players, they play very well…) - The achievements in the World Cup (for example: four times became champion in the World Cup, one time became champion in the World Cup 1966…) The questioner: - Which national football team do you like the best? - Do you know the name of the captain? - Can you tell me some reasons why you like the team? - What achievements did they gain? 5. Homework and evaluation (3’): - T asks Ss to learn the words they have studied by heart. - Practice at home talking about a sport they like (for example : football, volleyball, basketball…) using the information: + The name of sport (Wushu…) + Who do you like the best in the sport? (Thuy Hien…) + Some reasons why you like it. - T encourages Ss who take part in the lesson actively and confidently. - T reminds Ss to be more active and confident in the next periods. .
