traditional devices such as MP3, MP4, Smartphone treat office computer incidents, it can deactivate the network at any time, synchronize data with computers, laptops and other devices As per figures Google distributed from ponder online behavior of "Vietnamese shoppers 2014" conducted by TNS Company, “The percentage of people over 16 years using smartphone in Vietnam increased rapidly to 70% in smartphone users in Vietnam Therefore, the using smartphone of students has an effect on academic achievement is a matter of particular concern A research done by Kibona, L, & Mgaya, G (2015) at Tanzania shows that smartphone’s addiction is a major impact on academic and social life The results have exhibited that the smartphone has negative effect on students’ academic achievement Students generally employments their smartphone primarily for social networks such as Instagram, Facebook, Zalo,…., instead of utilizing smartphone for academic purpose As per Hawi, N S., & Samaha, M (2016), “the number of male and female university students were susceptibly similar to smartphone addiction” Moreover, male and female university students have increased in completing an average score with refinement in the same level of smartphone addiction Another research conducted by Md Moyazzem Hossain (2019) at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh shows that seriously “cell phone use was related to school failure as well as other negative behaviors such as smoking and excessive alcohol utilize” If students overuse the Internet or spend too much time on social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram or YouTube, it will have a negative impact on their academic achievement The application of cell phone improves students’ learning but can be a harmful source to student Therefore, an issue has been raised: “How does smartphone affect students' academic performance” And then, this research paper will explain and answer that problem II Methodology The study measures smartphones usage time with levels: 1- Never, - Rarely, – Sometimes, – Frequently, - Always This research paper carries out steps: Step1: Trial research on small samples to detect flaws of questionnaire Step 2: The official study is conducted instantly after the questionnaire edited from research results The study's survey subjects were 100 third year students of foreign language at Vietnam Maritime University III Result According to the survey, there are 100/100 students using smartphones, of which 38,5% male and female account for 61,5% Students often use smartphone with three purposes: Used for learning purpose, the smartphone on items communication purpose instead of learning and entertainment purpose The level of use for entertainment purposes is frequent (20,4%), regular communication and always is the highest (68,9%), used for learning purposes only at a normal level accounted for 44,7% With items communication purpose, students can call, message, video chat with relatives or friends (Facebook, Zalo ), make friends on social networks, track information of friends which is very convenient Besides, a large of students use the smartphone to study It helps students easily find necessary information in just few moments Students use smartphone during class time for study purposes accounted 16,3% and 87.3% of students use smartphones for other purposes (listening to music, watching movies, surfing the web, reading news and the majority is on Facebook) Analysis of the collected data shows that there are four classes of people, as follows: Normal users - those who see people using, then we use it And sometimes referred to by experts as "technological lagger" This group accounted for 34.8% of the sample Technology adapters are people who use smartphones to make life easier, easier and to increase the performance of their jobs This group has the highest proportion accounting for 40.2% Those who focus on the trendy, fashionable aspect of technology They expect the use of smartphones will increase their social status This group accounts for 11% Technology addicts, who want to get the latest technology, enjoy exploring new features; accounting for 14% of the total number of research samples Rate of pupils about smartphone's impact Possitive impact Negative impact Both impact There are 62.9% of students using smartphones have a positive impact on academic, 22.7% of students said that a negative impact on academic and 14.4% of students using smartphones have both positive and negative effects The survey shows that some reasons for poor or good study results when using the phone are students using smartphone for purposes other than high learning purposes, installing supporting software support is much but time is spent less, using time to surf social networks too much in a day, so the academic performance results not tend to be good Therefore, students should use smartphone for academic purposes such as listening to audio books, learn on your own via record class lectures, look up dictionaries online, search for studying documents, will make higher learning results Conversely if the more students use a smartphone for self-expression results their learning will decline IV Discussion Positive effects of smartphones First of all, smartphone have become an unlimited means of entertainment for students After a hard day of studying, thanks to smartphone, students can reduce stress more easily Next, smartphone is a tool that makes it easier for students to connect with people It helps make friend with many people in different places Through video call, people not need to meet face to face but can talk to each other Students can take photos and share them directly on social networks Cameras of smartphone are getting better and better and have even more highlights It is easy to take pictures, use an auto-retouching app to look better, and instantly share them on social network for friends and family to know Besides, smartphone can send and receive email regardless of computer Thanks to smartphones, sending and receiving emails is now easier and more convenient Students can post to their friends or teachers anytime, anywhere and very quickly without face-toface meeting Negative effects of smartphones on students Firstly, the use of smartphone has negative effect on the health Students are most addicted to texting, on Facebook or play games If one day too much texting will cause minor injuries to hands, back and neck to poor position Not only that, it also causes eye damage and can lead to short-sighted or astigmatism The second disadvantage is it make students disorganize sleep It can deny that smartphone addiction made for student improper bedtime or interrupted sleep Another drawback is causing feelings of loneliness Due to students abuse their smartphones so much, they rarely see or talk to each other like they used to Spending too much time online with smartphone and less direct communication makes teens feel lonely, while also reducing confidence, increasing dependence on parents for their children because they are not developing the necessary life skills Impacts of smartphone on academic achievement Smartphone both have positive and negative effects on students’ achievement In term of positive, it makes learning convenient more, allowing students to study anytime and anywhere In addition, students can also use smartphones as a learning aid It helps students easily find information about lessons when smartphones are connected to the internet On the other hand, smartphone also some disadvantage on academic performance Firstly, the more students use the smartphones, the lower the learning result Students often spend 6-8 hours per day on social networks such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, The number of female students are more addiction than male ones Moreover, the more students are addicted to mobile phones, the lower the ability of selfstudy Student learning is disturbed by smartphone applications, which causes students to lose control of their study time V Conclusion Using a smartphone to learn and using a smartphone for other purposes is directly related to student achievement The more use the smartphone for academic purposes, the better the results And contrast, the higher and higher the use of the smartphone for the purpose of self-expression, the result the more the learning decreases Smartphone are not just the tools / devices used by purpose of communication, entertainment, self-expression but also a tool to support learning effective The survey results show that using of smartphone appropriated will help students achieve academic results better Students should use smartphones for learning more like searching information, documents needed for lessons, looking up dictionaries, which helps students to understand more about new knowledge in addition to the lectures that the teacher has lectured in common and students in specific depend on the phone to cater to the needs to make friends more than academic work So, students need to allocate appropriate time for leisure activities on smartphone,
