program that shops for jobs for you These sites protect your confidentiality, search for your dream job and send you a private email based on the profile you provide You can set up job search agents on sites and be notified automatically by email when new job postings match the criteria you listed Many employer websites also allow job seekers to set up search agents to send new jobs as they’re listed A job search agent can also be set up to send listings to your cell phone or instant message account Pretty cool When placing your credentials before a World Wide Web audience, be sure to use the text, online, digital format explained earlier, unless otherwise directed to use MS Word, PDF or other formats designated by the receiver 286 Appendix ■ Job Search Resources Remember that using the Internet is not a substitute for traditional job-hunting techniques Only a small percentage of jobs are filled through the big, public job boards (Monster, CareerBuilder, and so on), which should supplement, not replace, targeted emailing and networking Of course, everything you post on the Internet is a public document, so keep it clean, honest and not too personal Networking Resources There few companies and agencies, you face tremendous competition Broaden your search and network, network, network Target your audience Make your target group as large as possible, but remember the 80/20 It can take up to one month for every $10,000 in salary to find a job Be prepared to start at a lower-paying position if required to supplement your income Get attention Expand your network by joining
