influence on the household’s economic conditions, makes major decisions, and is responsible for important family issues About one fourth (26.0%) of the household heads in Viet Nam are females, and 22.0% of the population is living in female-headed households1 The difference was marked between urban and rural areas In urban areas, one in every three households was female-headed, and nearly one third (33%) of the urban population lived in female-headed households Meanwhile, in rural areas, one in every five households was femaleheaded, and less than one fifth (17.1%) of the rural population and makes major decisions on behalf of the household The head of a household is often (but not necessarily) the highest income earner in the household and manages all economic and occupational activities of other members Most of the time, the head of household is the same as the one in the household registration booklet However, in some cases, the head of household in this survey is means being near or at the end of the working age, while this figure was much lower for male household heads (49.8%) While more than half (57.1%) of the male household heads had education attainment of lower secondary school or higher, one third of the female household heads had never attended school nor completed primary school Female household heads were older and had lower level of education
