Future show SundayM May 19th 2019 your letters Model Collector, MyTimeMedia Ltd, Eden House, Enterprise Way, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 6HF Christmas unwrapped “Winners will be sent a lucky dip from our fantastic prize pool” Black beauty H aving spotted the yellow Tomica Dallara model in part one of Fiat X1/9 finds, which I know I have as it's sitting in one of my display cabinets, I also noted mention of how the black version with racing driver is apparently very rare Imagine my surprise, then, when later idly looking into a few storage boxes I found that I have one! I couldn't remember owning it for some reason and bearing in mind that I have way too many storage boxes and models what were the chances of stumbling across it? The box is slightly tatty but the model is nice Perhaps you can let Kevin Brock know that at least one reader has that version? Thanks as always for an excellent magazine and best wishes for 2019 PAUL GATTY EMAIL Funnily enough, when I was working on the layout for Part of the Fiat X1/9 finds feature I ran an online search to see if I could find a copyright free image of this scarce back version that has so far eluded Kevin to include, but I drew a blank So, thank you so much for sharing this photograph of your model! Ed After reading Part of the Kevin Brock’s Fiat X1/9 feature in last month’s issue, Paul Gatty was delighted to learn that this version of Tomica’s Dallara Fiat X1/9 is a very scarce model indeed As a long term subscriber to Model Collector, I particularly enjoyed the Commer Coaches, Tintin and Land Rover Lone Star features in the Christmas 2018 issue and have a few observations of my own to make CHAD VALLEY COMMER COACHES I’ve included a photo of my six Commer coaches in different colours (two blue, one green, one metallic light green, one red and one metallic violet blue) although there’s no doubt there are others As a keen collector of Chad Valley Wee-KinToys (I am lucky enough to have more than 80 in my collection), I’ve noticed a peculiarity on one of my Commer coaches: the hole into which the key for the motor fits is found on the left side of all of my examples, except one of the two blue versions, where it instead features on the right side Can anyone offer an explanation for this? Michael Sordet has examples of Chad Valley’s Commer Coach in a variety of different colour finishes Curiously, however, one of his blue examples has the hole for key that winds up the model’s clockwork mechanism on its right side, whereas on all other examples he has encountered it features on the left DINKY TOYS COMMER COACHES I am also including a photo with three minor wheel variations: 1) The common blue wheels with black tyres 2) The less common blue wheels with white tyres 3) Very rare spun alloy wheels TINTIN MODELS I feel I should warn collectors about an issue with some of the first series (packaged in blue boxes) Tintin models I was very disappointed when I discovered that a few of my mine were showing signs of ‘resin fatigue’ It got so bad I had to replace six models of the models I’d bought from the first blue boxes series as they were no longer in a condition fit for display So, anyone considering adding first series models to their collections should be sure to inspect their prospective purchases carefully ‘Resin fatigue’ can affect both the chassis and body This can be caused by changes in temperature and humidity levels during the casting process, something I learned while producing the range MA COLLECTION 20 years ago 74 www.modelcollector.com | february 2019 email: lindsey.amrani@mytimemedia.com Wheel variations on three of the Dinky Toys Commer Coaches in Michel Sordet’s collection – the spun alloy wheels on the model also singled out in the solo shot, being very rare indeed FUTURE FEATURE IDEAS There are two other excellent BD models series in the same style as the Tintin models: one produced by Hachette and based on the quintessentially British story of Blake and Mortimer written by Edgar P Jacobs, and one, produced by Atlas, based on the cars featured in the classic Franco-Belgian Spirou and Fantasio comics Both would make interesting subjects for future features MICHEL SORDET GENEVA, SWITZERLAND The fascinating information shared on these pages are what make Letters my favourite section of the magazine to work on! Thank you so much, Michel Oh, and if anyone reading has any key information (apologies for the irresistible pun!) to divulge in regards to the Chad Valley Wee Kin Commer Coach query posed, please get in touch! Ed A bright future? I have just been reading the January 2019 edition of Model Collector and found the Signing Off piece by Pat Conneally really thought provoking It really got me thinking about how much plastic is used in the packaging of our models Take, for example, those clear Perspex display cases now so highly favoured I’ll bet most of us whip our latest buys straight of these and into display cabinets, simply storing the plastic cartons away somewhere safe, just in case we ever move house or decide to sell our models on At some point in the future, however, these are destined to become part of the ongoing environmental problem, and that’s before we even get to all the polystyrene and other difficult to dispose of materials also employed in the name of protection When I was growing up in the 1960s all our models came packaged in good old fashioned, biodegradable, cardboard and not only was the protection offered really well thought out but, as an added bonus, box inners often featured some great artwork, too In fact, in a lot of cases, you could use the attractive box inners to display models against on your bedroom shelf once you’d finished playing with them With the topic still very much at the forefront of my mind, while shopping at my local supermarket it occurred to me that one of the most fragile products we ever buy, eggs, are packaged in simple, moulded cardboard boxes! So, perhaps the solution to the plastics issue, certainly in the small scale world, is not nearly as complicated as model manufacturers may think I think there would be added benefits to such a move, too On a recent episode of the TV show Flog It, James Lewis, the antiques expert, pointed out that the reason why some objects are called ‘collectables’ is because of the memories they evoke I think he was spot on with that one! I am sending you pictures of some old Corgi Toys packaging from when I was growing up in the 60s Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could see the return of such creative design, with no plastic to worry about? Just a few example of the charming packaging that Ian Morton suggests today’s model manufacturers would well to relook at when it comes to devising practical, and appealing, solutions to the plastic pollution problem Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and many thanks for a wonderful magazine, which I always look forward to IAN MORTON EMAIL As plastic pollution has become such a serious environmental issue, it’s our collective responsibility as consumers to press for change Over the last couple of decades, the packaging of so many of our models seems to have become ever more excessive, complicated and frustrating – and damage limitation simply can’t continue to so damaging! As you, and so many others, are pointing out, perhaps it time manufacturers start to relook at how things were done, simply but very effectively, in past As you know, at the end of January I’ll be chatting with lots of manufacturers at the London and Nuremberg toyfairs, so it will be interesting to learn how seriously the industry as a whole is taking the situation and the response of individual brands to this challenge Ed february 2019 | www.modelcollector.com 75 minimodelshop.co.uk Thousands of collectible models in stock buses, aircraft, bikes, cars, plant, farm, commercial and military vehicles Top brands including AUTOart, Maisto, Minichamps, Kyosho, Sun Star, Mattel & many more 08456 44 70 44 Free Delivery over £50 • Exclusive Discount Club Huge Range • Free Personalised Number Plates Display Cases and Stands Bulldog Fairs Great Toy Collectors Fairs in the Southwest of England Shepton Mallet Shepton Mal let Royal WestShowgr ShowgrooundundBA4BA46QN6QN Royal BatBathh && West Up to 300 Stalls The GREAT WINTER Fair Giant Toy & Train Collectors Fair Sunday 28thJanuary Sunday 27th 10.30am 2.30pm 10.30am 2.30pm Adults Adults £4.00 each £4.00 each under free with an adult under 16yrs free16yrs with an adult from 08.30 £10.00 EarlyEarly Bird fromBird 08.30 £10.00 On thethe A371 A371 twotwo mimilleess from from Shepton Shepton Mal Mallleet,t, 33 mimilleess from from Castl Castlee Cary Cary traitrainn stati statioonn On 1000’ss car cars**Café** ***Free Free parparking king fforor 1000’ s* Café* Malvern EXETER (Westpoint) A MEG Post Code WR13 6NW In the Severn Hall Toy Collectors Fair Three Counties Showground Sunday 3rd February 10.30 2.30 Admission Price £4.00 each Early Bird from 08.00 £10.00 16 years and under with accompanied adult FREE 1000’s of Collectable toys for sale0+ 20 ls l Sta Old and modern collectables: DINKY**CORGI**SPOT-ON**HORNBY Lego MAINLINE**MARKLIN**LLEDO**DOLLS AND TEDDIES Star wars ++++ 10000’s more Westpoint Arena, Clyst St Mary, Exeter EX5 1DJ Up to 300 Stalls Giant Toy & Train Collectors Fair Sunday 17th February 1000’s of Collectable toys for sale 10.30am 2.30pm Adults £4.00 each under 16yrs free with an adult Early Bird from 08.30 £10.00 Old and modern collectables: DINKY**CORGI**SPOT-ON**HORNBY Lego MAINLINE**MARKLIN**LLEDO**DOLLS AND TEDDIES Star wars ++++ 10000’s more Easy access from M5, Westpoint is just mile from Jnc 30 on the A3052 Probably the Best Toy Collectors Fairs in the West Call us on 01373 452857 or 07917 125641 Email: bulldogfairs@aol.com web site: www.bulldogfairs.com your letters Model Collector, MyTimeMedia Ltd, Eden House, Enterprise Way, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 6HF Unreleased Lledo set One of the achievements of Model Collector, and one the benefits to its readers, has been the identifying and promoting of previously unknown aspects of British diecast history – from unusual and scarce releases, to plans that were, in the event, never put into production I thought readers might, therefore, be interested in what seem to be firm plans for a Lledo boxed set, which – as far as I’m aware – never got further than an initial design for the box My interest in Lledo ambulances goes back some years – in fact, I think my first article for Model Collector was in Edition No back in 1987! Although there has been a decline in Lledo collectability, I have kept my collection and recently came into possession of some ‘trial Lledo boxes’ I was fascinated to see that one of these was for an ‘Ambulances of the Armed Forces’ boxed set The back of the box shows that the set was intended to comprise of: * DG 35 Dennis Limousine, as an RAF Ambulance * DG 43 Morris Van, as an Army Ambulance * DG 52 Morris Parcels Van, as a Royal Navy Ambulance The choice of models suggests that the set was intended for 1992/93 It was, however, never issued The castings selected were not really suitable for ambulances, as all would have needed windows to be represented in their sides Whether there were trial models for these I not know, but I suspect there may have been, in view of the decision to produce a box Another piece of diecast history! CHRIS BATTEN EMAIL Packaging for a proposed but never released Lledo set recently acquired by ambulance collector Chris Batten You’ve been with the magazine far longer than I have, Chris! The truth is (and I say this with no disrespect to the title’s former editors intended whatsoever) the achievements of MC over the years are largely down to wonderful contributors, such as yourself, and how incredibly forthcoming our humbling knowledgeable readers are What a shame this set was never produced The intended models may, as you’ve pointed out, have been a bit ‘iffy’, but that artwork for the box is just gorgeous and would, alone, have sold the set to me What a find! Thanks so much for sharing Ed Unexpected delights I could not agree more with Dominic Borrelli’s comments concerning Unexpected Delights in January’s issue of MC Two years ago I was on holiday in north Devon and called in to the Hartland Quay shipwreck museum In the gift shop was a Welly VW T2 Bus, 1972, in red and at a scale of 1:38 It had a friction motor and an opening side door I didn’t expect much for my £4 but was very pleasantly surprised Toys and models need not be mutually exclusive Some time ago, in Boston Harbour market, I picked up a diecast friction drive yellow school bus and a Lincoln stretched limo, neither boxed but new and for less than $6 for the pair I am sending you few pictures of these toy finds that I Proof that collecting doesn’t have to be have happily added to expensive – a few of Dennis Trebble’s my model collection bargain buys DENNIS TREBBLE EMAIL I love a bargain! And I think both Dom’s article, and your letter, are a great reminders of the fact that this doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby and really can be enjoyed by whatever your budget may be Ed february 2019 | www.modelcollector.com 77 ...
