Just in case you missed the grille badge ● Schoolboy error Booked a hotel room based on price / location for a lads’ night without checking the website Eek Not sure how I’m gonna explain this to the boys… ● Beard on the ’box Papped on live TV – my 1.5 seconds of fame nside this issue, you’ll find a preview of The VolksWorld Show at Sandown Park in Surrey, which is the UK’s premier air-cooled VW event But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing for Transporter fans to enjoy Far from it Sure, the indoor halls will be filled with the older stuff, but outside there are Van clubs, awning and camping accessory displays, plus traders and Vans for sale, too I’ve loved being involved with the show since I began my journalistic career as a staff writer on VolksWorld almost 20 years ago now, and this year I’ve been working alongside Ian Cushway (VolksWorld’s Editor) sorting out the show cars and indoor displays I think it’s fair to say that, even if you know nothing about those quirky old air-cooled VWs, the quality and level of detail in some of the debut vehicles this year will knock your socks off As such, young Aaron (Goo) has stepped up and offered to be the official VWt representative outside, so he’ll be the one positioning the Transporter clubs and displays What could possibly go wrong?! He’s assured me that, by the time I escape from the air-cooleds, I’ll be blown away by his ‘evolution of Van’ display and the perfectly parked club displays I’m certainly looking forward to that point in the weekend as it will mean I can take some time out and catch up with Goo and the Transporter crew So, if you’re thinking of joining the fun, be sure to say hi if you spot Goo or me mooching about We’ll be the ones with beards… One more thing, if you’re thinking about camping at the show, remember you have to pre-book weekend camping tickets Arrive without a camping pass and you’ve missed the boat Camping / tickets can be booked via www.volksworldshows.com Moving forward, it’s now time to start planning some summer weekends, shows, road trips and adventures Apologies if this conjures up an upsetting image but, as I sit typing this column, I’m delighted to feel a ‘breeze around the knees’, today being Air cooled in, water cooled out, but Sandown Park offers the best of both the first outing this year for my traditional spring / summer / autumn wardrobe of shorts and t-shirt In fact, I just heard on the news that today (26 Feb) is officially the hottest February day on record, with temperatures hitting 21.2degC in Kew Gardens, London So right now I’m itching to clock off a little early and head for the beach to watch the sun set over the Essex Riviera, aka Tilbury Docks Update: having enjoyed an ice cream whilst watching the sun go down, I was thinking I’d spend the evening mapping out my summer, only to reach home at and find the sky black and the temperature had plummeted Yup, reality check However, once I’d cracked open a beer and slumped onto the sofa, I looked down at my hairy knees (!) and decided it was time to turn my frown upside down The fact the sun was done by 5.30pm may have burst my summer bubble but, with the central heating in full effect, I could see a positive side to this scenario In short(s), the flipside of an early sunset is a longer evening, meaning I had plenty of time to look up show dates and make my plans for the summer of ’19 before hitting the sack Yep, I had my Transporter mojo back! t “I’m delighted to feel a ‘breeze around the knees’ today” Paul Beside the seaside: sunsets, palm trees and ice creams It’s gotta be the Essex Riviera! From that point on, moules marinière has become a VWt team favourite, and is always on the menu whenever we camp anywhere near the coast The most important thing to remember, is mussels – and indeed any seafood – does need to be properly chilled, and consumed whilst as fresh as possible Hence we wouldn’t suggest purchasing mussels and packing them 90 VWt What you’ll need Tools: Camping stove Large saucepan with lid A knife and chopping board If you don’t like sea food, you’re missing out These little rubbery suckers are a treat for the senses Ingredients: 1.75kg / 4lb mussels 2-3 garlic cloves shallots (or red onion) 15g / ½oz butter 100ml / 3½fl.oz dry white wine (or cider) 120ml / 4fl.oz double cream Parsley, coarsely chopped Crusty bread to serve Stats: Preparation time: 20-30 mins Cooking time: 10-20 mins Serves: serves 4-6 Cost: approx £10 all in Top tip Alive alive, oh… Drop your mussels into a bowl of cold water before you start Discard any open mussels that won’t close when lightly squeezed / tapped on a hard surface Live mussels will close within a few seconds, while dead mussels will remain open and could lead to an upset stomach (no fun whilst camping!) Likewise, when cooked, leave aside any mussels that have not opened into your Camper’s fridge / cool box before you set off for a weekend away At least not unless you’re only travelling a short distance and plan to use them on the first night We always prefer to make a beeline for fish markets at coastal towns when camping nearby Or, failing that, hit a decent supermarket and check what they’ve got at the wet fish counter We picked up 1.75kg (4lb) of live, ropegrown, Scottish mussels for just over a fiver, which makes this one of the cheapest dishes on our regular hit list The small pot of double cream you need is less than £2, and I’m not including the cost of the glug of white wine as there’s plenty left to drink while you eat the mussels! Incidentally, this dish works really well with cider (and bacon) in place of the white wine – it’s really down to personal taste at the end of the day t If you don’t own one of these gas canisterfuelled camping hobs, you’re missing out on one of the cheapest (like £10!) and most popular camping essentials of all time 1  Buy the freshest mussels you can, and note the Top tip box out (left) Discard any dead ones Trust us on this… 3  2  Pull out the tough, fibrous beards protruding from between the tightly closed shells and pop the cleaned mussels back into a bowl of cold water Mussels aside, it’s time to chop either a couple of shallots or a red onion into small chunks, crush, peel and finely chop two to three cloves of garlic then roughly chop a bunch of fresh parsley The onion and garlic will be gently fried to soften it first, the parsley will be added later Pop your largest saucepan (with lid) onto the hob and melt the butter over a gentle heat Now it’s time to crack open your white white (no need to blow the budget here – a £5-£7 bottle will fine) Alternatively, cider works surprisingly well with mussels, too! With the onions and garlic bubbling away, add 100ml of wine, and use the rest to fill your friends’ glasses Add the onion and garlic and stir for around five minutes until softened (not burnt) Drop the mussels into the pot In an ideal world you’ll half-fill the saucepan, which will allow plenty of space for the steam to work its magic Pop the lid on and crank up the gas Mussels only take 3-5 minutes to cook, but you might want to stir them around once or twice just to make sure they steam evenly 10 Once steamed, pour in the double cream, which really takes things to the next level 11 Finally, add the chopped parsley and give the pot a final stir That’s it Perfectly cooked mussels in a rich, creamy broth “this tasty dish… can be thrown together in next to no time” As soon as the mussels have all opened, they’re done and ready to eat Don’t leave them too long or they’ll become chewy Jolly’s juice Vanlife As this recipe involves just 100ml of white wine, that leaves more than enough plonk in the bottle to fill a few glasses, which will accompany the dish perfectly Having enjoyed Pete’s moules marinière in the past, we tend to opt for a budget (but not the cheapest) Pinot Grigio – a light, fresh and fruity wine with hints of apple or pear However, sometimes Pete likes to mix things up by replacing the white wine with a glug of cider (which he often complements with some chopped bacon, too) A fruity, apple cider works surprisingly well with this dish and, should you happen to be camping in the west country, Kent, Norfolk, or anywhere that happens to have a local cider farm, you’ll find the perfect cider just around the corner If you’re supermarketbound, my personal favourite is Aspall’s Clement’s Four, which is sold in 500ml bottles (4% vol) It’s mild and gentle with fresh and fragrant overtones, which work well alongside the sweet mussel meat Come on, step up from White Lightning for this dish! 12 Et voilà – tasty moules marinière for four to six… for under a tenner… in less than 30 minutes… with only one pan to clean Like we said, the perfect camping meal Serve with crusty bread, which is perfect for soaking up that delicious, creamy broth at the bottom of the bowl A great alternative to the typical BBQ meat feast!
