Why Julia shunned Holly W hen Julia Roberts emerged from the wings at the Oscars last month, jaws dropped As she strode on stage clutching the best-picture envelope she was about to open, a trail of pink couture billowing behind her, Hollywood’s A-list were in raptures Looking impossibly youthful, a beaming Julia (51) announced that her return to the spotlight was complete in the most, well, Julia Roberts way possible – with a stunning frock and that big, beautiful smile America’s sweetheart has been quiet in the past few years She’s shunned Tinseltown for a discreet life in New Mexico and Malibu, and her acting roles have been few and far between perhaps just one or two projects a year She’d be forgiven for simply calling it a day on work, given that her net worth is more than $200 million, but the reason for her absence from public life was more complex – it was for the sake of her marriage Rumours have swirled since she and her cinematographer husband Danny Moder married 17 years ago, after meeting the year before on the movie The Mexican At the time, Julia was one of the biggest stars on the planet and was starring in the rom-com opposite Brad Pitt Danny, meanwhile, was a camera operator – and he was still married to his first wife, make-up artist Vera Steimberg, which created salacious tabloid headlines for years, particularly as a furious Vera ensured their divorce proceedings dragged on for more than two years As a young man, Los Angeles-born Danny initially shunned showbiz, instead earning a degree in psychology But the bright lights soon came calling and he got his first big break in 1995 as a production assistant on Crimson Tide, with el Washington ene Hackman, re working his up the ranks wood He’s worked on big-budget films including Mr & Mrs Smith and Spider-Man as a camera operator, and has served as a cinematographer in lesserknown films, taking on a handful of projects each year, but his career has always been far more low-key than Julia’s As the Weekly has previously reported, the pair have faced unique circumstances in their relationship, which has produced three children, twins Phinnaeus and Hazel (14), and Henry (11) Perhaps their hardest challenge has been Danny’s sensitivity about always being in the shadow of his much more famous wife, sources claim “Danny has felt smothered and manipulated,” an insider says “He feels bitter when she’s off working because it leaves him at home with all of the responsibilities and little time for a career But when she’s back home, the demands begin and the fights get out of control.” Though the couple have certainly faced challenges, friends insist they’re still very much together and that they’re simply made for each other, with both Julia and Danny having made a commitment to scale down their work to spend time with each other and the kids “They’ve always come out the other side very much together,” says a pal “They Julia and husband Danny take some couple time in Rome, where Danny bought her red roses have a really solid, loving marriage… Their top priority is their family.” Julia says that living away from Hollywood has allowed the couple to live a more normal life – and provided a sense of normalcy for their kids, who have only recently begun to understand the extent of their mother’s fame “I don’t think there was one lightning moment when any of the kids came home and said, ‘Wait a minute, are you Julia Roberts?’” she recalls “One of them came home from school a couple of years ago and said, ‘Somebody asked me today if my mom was Julia Roberts and I said no.’ “We talked about it and they didn’t feel they hadn’t been telling the truth because they really don’t have a connection to the Julia Roberts of that question So I said, ‘Well, I think that’s totally fine if that’s what you feel comfortable with.’ “And then another of my kids said, ‘Somebody asked me the same question and I said yes!’ So I guess we all have different answers to everything.” The three children enjoy playing sports, and Julia and Danny are often seen on the sidelines kitted out with rugs, coffee and packed lunches, really making a day of it Julia says she and Danny also The superstar fell for the married camera operator in 2001, while starring with Brad in The Mexican New Zealand Woman’s Weekly Despite constant rumours, Julia insists her marriage is stronger than ever and says she ensures the family does “regular” things together make sure they all “regular” things together, such as buying groceries and preparing dinner Despite that famous face, Julia says she’s hardly ever been recognised while on the domestic rounds and those locals who know her never make a fuss The uncomfortable part is when the family get to the checkout and the US tabloids have her photo splashed across the cover with a salacious headline about the state of the couple’s marriage The actress says she now tries to laugh off the rumours as much as she can – which has become easier as they have become more far-fetched “I like when they write about, ‘The $150 million divorce,’ and then a week later a different tabloid says, ‘The $275 million divorce.’ I’m like, ‘Well, somebody got a pay cheque in the last week This is getting good!’” Danny is also able to laugh off rumours of Julia having affairs with her co-stars – over New Zealand Woman’s Weekly years, she’s she s been linked to the years nearly everyone she’s appeared opposite, including My Best Friend’s Wedding star Dermot Mulroney, Money Monster’s George Clooney and, most recently, Sean Penn Julia says they both found the George rumour to be the most hilarious as she and the actor have a wonderful friendship Julia says her kids call him “George Looney” and the two families often stay at each other’s houses George recently said, “Danny and I are great friends, and love each other too What’s really fun is it’s really like a family.” Julia chimed in, adding, “It makes it easy What he’s saying is [that] we’ve just stitched our lives closer together, all these people that come into our lives – my husband, my children, Hollywood Homecoming: Julia with good pal George, and opening up about her life with Danny to Oprah (above right) his wife [Amal Clooney] ” With Julia and Danny’s marriage now in tip-top shape – the pair were spotted last month enjoying a romantic stroll in Rome, where Danny stopped to present his wife with a bunch of roses – Julia feels it’s now her time to shine once again She began her comeback with Wonder, a hit dramedy in which she starred opposite Owen Wilson, and followed it up with indie flick Ben is Back, before striking oil once again with Homecoming, a critically acclaimed web series produced by Amazon She supported her new projects with an intense publicity schedule, featuring countless red-carpet events, fashion-magazine covers, an interview with Oprah Winfrey, a reunion photoshoot for My Best Friend’s Wedding and even a new Instagram account, which she admits she’s still coming to grips with She also did a flurry of press interviews, where the notoriously private star dished on family, friends and even Danny “He truly, to this day, to this minute, is just my favourite human,” Julia says “I’m more interested in what he has to say or his point of view than anybody Really, I mean, we’re so lucky in that way We just really, really like each other and we enjoy each other’s company.” Julia has even eschewed her usual approach to privacy by posting loved-up shots of herself and Danny on Instagram But it was her appearance at this year’s Academy Awards that truly set tongues wagging – in a good way Social media blew up over that attention-grabbing pink Elie Saab gown, with users commenting on how fantastic the actress looked – and how GEORGE’S WARNING J ulia’s pals George and Amal put on their own dazzling display last week when they were the guests of honour at a dinner hosted by Prince Charles (70) at Buckingham Palace The black-tie dinner was a celebration of the Prince’s Trust International, an organisation that supports vulnerable young people through education and job training Big showbiz names were there, including Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor George (57) and Amal (41) shared a laugh with the prince, whom they saw last year at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex The couple have been vocal supporters of Meghan in past months, with George voicing disgust at the way the newest royal was being scrutinised Last month, he said the behaviour was particularly distressing, given her pregnancy “She has been pursued and vilified, and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it’s history repeating itself We’ve seen how that ends,” he said h , among her Hollywood pals “She’s stunning!” remarked one fan, while another wrote, “Holy hell, Julia Roberts is HOT!” And with reports that she’s about to star in another big TV series for Amazon, this vibrant Julia is a sight we can expect to see plenty more of in the # near future MARCH 25 PUZZLE SOLUTIONS THIS WEEK’S SOLUTIONS T DA AVID HARTNELL’S HO OLLYWOOD TRIVIA The Chase Margot Kidder Mexico Alec But that’s what I get for falling over halfway down the steep, sharp steps from our road to our front door I was in the midst of an ill-judged handyman moment when it happened I got tangled in the hose, then a step wasn’t quite where I thought it was and I tumbled into a slow-motion dance down the stairs until I hit the dust, snapping the little finger on my right hand, though I didn’t notice that for a while For several minutes, I lay there staring at the sky, convinced I’d broken every other bone in my body I eventually took a look around and it was just the little finger, though it hurt like it was much bigger – especially after I straightened it up I hadn’t liked the look of it sticking out from my hand at a 45-degree angle and tried to make it normal again At the hospital, the doctor said I’d done a nice job popping my finger back into place I gave him my best John Wayne look, but I didn’t feel heroic The only heroes in A&E are the staff, followed closely by whoever took you there In this case, the darling wife Though she wasn’t entirely reliable It was only later when I examined my hospital admission form that I noticed she’d written me up as a “retired writer” She knows how much I dislike that “r” word, but told me later that she thought saying I was retired might get me special attention Though, of course, everyone gets special attention in A&E Sometimes it’s even entertaining attention The nurses who came to put me in plaster were a hoot “Blue or black?” one of them asked, referring to what colour I’d like my cast to be “Black,” I said “We had a bet about you,” the other one said “We thought you’d choose black.” “You’re an artist,” I said to the one slathering all the plaster up my arm.” “I know,” she said “I love to pottery in my spare time.” “Really?” “I’m joking,” she said with a slightly alarming laugh It seemed like a lot of plaster just for a little finger, but they were determined that I shouldn’t be able to much of anything with the hand I almost everything with, plastering me all the way to my elbow and leaving my right hand as useful as a fork at a soup party I’m getting by, though, onehanded in a two-handed world, unable to much that’s useful, passing my time looking at houses for sale in Auckland, watching the prices stop going up and start coming down, like I always said they would We’ve been in Wellington five years now and the pull to go back north has never quite gone away, so we’re feeling flexible And, in the meantime, we’re enjoying the sweetest summer the unpredictable capital has served us since we moved here It’s almost as if it wants us to stay New Zealand Woman’s Weekly 77 Weekly t n e m n i a t r e t En T hanks to the likes of La La Land and The Greatest Showman, it’s clear that modern musicals are loved by audiences in today’s movie landscape, and New Zealand is diving into the successful genre with the tuneful tale Daffodils Kiwi actress Rose McIver plays a young woman, also called Rose, and the story charts her relationship with her husband from the 1960s to the 1980s Their romance is told through the eyes of daughter Maisie (played by Kimbra), and unfolds alongside a slew of hit Kiwi songs such as Bic Runga’s Drive and Dave Dobbyn’s Language REVIEWS “This movie reminds us how much musical talent there is in this country It’s unbelievable,” Rose says of Daffodils, which was originally a stage play and inspired by a true story The 30-year-old is known to many for her role in TV series iZombie, as well as appearing in the viral romance film A Christmas Prince on Netflix But Daffodils was a particularly special project for Rose because it meant coming home to work “I’ve always been so grateful to be from New Zealand and I’ve known that I want to end up spending most of my time in this country,” she tells “Living abroad has been really useful But it’s so nice to be home And the people that we worked with on this job − everybody’s cut from the same cloth, it’s the same spirit and hardworking energy that I grew up around I’ve been so grateful that Daffodils has been the project to come home for.” FILM CAPTAIN MARVEL (M) They say don’t judge a book by its cover and this is something that rings true for films too My expectations were low when I went to watch the latest superhero flick Captain Marvel It follows a female alien warrior who finds herself on Earth during an intergalactic battle and begins to question her past when she starts recalling a life she once had on the planet Leading lady Brie Larson teams up with Samuel L Jackson’s Agent Nick Fury, and together they make for a humorous and delightful duo who really bring the story to life As Marvel’s first female-led movie, it’s a great step towards doing something different in a franchise that’s getting quite tired and repetitive Ellen Mackenzie DAFFODILS IS SET TO WOO MOVIE LOVERS melodic Rose co-stars with fellow Kiwi actor George Mason Daffodils, in cinemas Thursday SCOTT’S NEAT DR AMEDY TV On the rocks! Nicky Pellegrino BOOKS EDITOR N MY BOOKS FOCUS PHOTOGRAPHER LEE MILLER’S LIFE IS IN THE PICTURE IN THIS DEBUT NOVEL ovels that fictionalise the lives of real people always attract me, particularly when they are about talented women from the past who were overshadowed by the men they lived or worked with The Age of Light is about photographer Lee Miller She was a strikingly beautiful New York fashion model who moved to Paris in the late 1920s and became a photographer After working with the famous Man Ray, she then went on to be a photojournalist capturing the horrors of World War II This novel tells Lee’s story through the lens of her love affair and working relationship with Man Ray But it begins at a low point, towards the end of her life, as her career is stuttering to a halt and she is an alcoholic who has lost her looks The novel dances back and forth through time It takes us to the 1920s when a young and hopeful Lee arrives in Paris All alone, she tries to forge a life there, eventually joining up with the surrealist movement in the city These longer chapters are interspersed with fragments covering her courageous wartime exploits in the 1940s What emerges is the story of an extraordinary woman, one who was taken advantage of by men, and not especially supported by other women, but through flair and sheer determination did whatever she set out to The tricky thing with novels like this is how much is fact and how much is down to the writer’s imagination e A feminist perspective has been taken here, witth a focus on Man Ray’s arrogance and the way he used Lee whilst proclaiming his love for her Other parts of her liffe have been skipped overr quickly or left out altogether So while I was captivated by the story, I did find myself longing to know more about Lee after Man Ray, and how she became such a depressed, disappointed older woman Aside from that, The Age of Light is a stylish debut that vividly brings both the surrealist era and its art to life For lovers of art, history and thorny love stories, this is a winner BOOK o f th e WEEK The A Th Age of Light by Whitney Scharer (Macmillan, RRP $34.99) Interior designer Hamish Dodd appears on 100 Day Renovation, Saturdays on Prime My favourite book ever is… The Mole Family’s Christmas by Russell Hoban As a child, we had a family tradition of reading a Christmas story each night of December leading up to Christmas Day, and I looked forward to this one every year When I was lucky enough to have a son of my own, I began reading it to him and it’s our favourite book now My book of the moment is… Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson It’s book 13 of the Wheel of Time series I love fantasy books and the escapism they offer There are plenty of real-life trials and tribulations every day, so to escape for a few hours to a world that doesn’t exist and just enjoy it is something I look forward to About the author… Whitney Scharer She lives in Arlington, Massachusetts with her husband and daughter She has studied creative writing, written lots of short fiction and also works as a graphic designer The Age of Light is her first novel This novel was inspired by “I first learned about Lee Miller in 2011, when I saw an exhibition of her and Man Ray’s work As I walked around YOUR B it, I grew increasingly BOOK CLTU more surprised, ke he Age Want to ma b lu c k o and frankly more r next bo of Light you to t in annoyed, that she a talking po o read? Here’s d w o H : wasn’t as famous a ussion start the disc Miller’s life e e name as Man Ray you think L different Her photos are n e e b e v a h might been if she hadn’t incredible and she so beautiful? herself is fascinating By the time I left the exhibition, I was captivated by her.” The most challenging thing about writing it was “Accurately depicting the after-effects of the sexual trauma Lee experienced as a child I did lots of reading about trauma survivors and spent a lot of time channelling how she would have felt.” The way I feel about Lee Miller now is “I think of Lee as a feminist before her time She’s an incredibly complicated woman and is full of contradictions, but should be admired for her courage and ambition, and for her bravery in going after what she wanted.” New Zealand Woman’s Weekly 79 Jockeying for the best viewing spot!
