Visual Narratives Report POSTER COLLAGE Chu Quynh Anh | GDH18297 | March 10th 2019 THE POSTER Progression Faking depression The idea came from the observation from my perspective as I’ve witnessed such events of other pupils talking about depression as if they would understand this mental illness just by a glance through some random articles online, also known as talking about an issue that they’ve never been through themselves Furthermore, such singers singing about depressed feelings of their own like Lana Del Rey, Melanie Martinez, XXXTentacion, etc and most recently, Billie Eilish had “inspired” Vietnamese teenagers in general to become edgy It’s still considered to be a minimal problem compared to other major society problems worth concerning, which is why I wanted to spread the right message to those edgy teens, took the idea as a realization before it becomes overwhelming After expressing my idea to the teacher, he instead gave me a more purposeful of the problem He narrowed down as to why people should fake it, because attention is not motivational enough – which went way off track of what I was trying to portray Moreover, the idea of depression when shown as images is not simple so I was about to use words instead but then it would limit the message of the poster afterwards In other words, tackling an issue when you don’t understand it correctly especially sensitive ones could give the audience wrong ideas and make misleading advertisement ‘Faking depression’ mood board Being controlled After getting myself influenced by my teacher’s thoughts process somewhat about depression is when people’s minds are trapped inside a brick wall or a cage, then faking it would be being behind that barricade but underneath is another source controlling that person; I’ve come up to a more realistic idea – beggars which actually works for an illegal underground community PAGE Final idea: The immorality of abortion My thought process got stable again as I was scrolling through Dadaism art online and was inspired by the image of a pregnant woman and a bleeding heart At first I was going for a poster spreading about having safe sex since the idea of immorality in abortion is overrated in Vietnam recently, especially the event of two men praising and framing women for being immoral killing their babies cruelly occurred on social media In the end, with the limitation of resources and time, my poster will focus on that one obviously moral side of the story I was still trying to balance the subject with more images on the pregnant woman – she sits on a bed of flowers, behind her is a pregnancy test showing two lines meaning she got pregnant and birth control pills next to it, she then gets a line text saying “I cried and I laughed” obviously showing what she feels about what she had been through To put an end to the chain of her actions, she got an abortion with a gloved hand holding a bloody scalpel taking out from her bottom The baby pictures in the background were totally random, as I didn’t intend to have them, each has an expression of getting hurt upon their faces which I couldn’t resist to use it as background to add more to the story Here’s my first poster look for further descriptions: PAGE After getting more feedback, I was told to reconstruct my poster’s composition because he wanted to focus more about just that one side of the story, make it even more obvious and clear for the audience And the “demons” typography was being a huge distraction for the poster so I got rid of it immediately Adjusting might makes the poster looks limited but sometimes simplicity works and that’s what I was going for According to my teacher, I transformed the poster from horizontal to vertical to emphasize the fetus part more The woman is now laying on the ground, blood trails are messy underneath her and I kept the scalpel hand The two lines represent and connect the fetus with the pregnant woman but since it’s poorly drawn, it might have some misunderstanding to the audience ‘Abortion’ final making FEEDBACK My appropriate audiences are those whose age varied from 18 and above – age range which has enough ability to acknowledge about having safe sex and babies; all genders matter because having an abortion is responsible to both sides Yet, 2/5 people I’ve asked admitted they are not yet the target audience because they whether is a male character or she never had sex before, which are the huge deals to begin with In general, they all think the idea is a well thought-out, sensitive yet rough, impactful choice The style my poster heads towards to is mostly praised for its dark, haunting and twisted touch on the subject yet it serves an aesthetic pleasant to the public eyes Thus, the imagery is fitting and eye-catching at the same time, only to be criticized as variation needed Although the use of colour included is highly contrast each other, theme fitting generally, it is torn down to be a little bland, not really that harmonizing, and the background should definitely need toned down colour The given brief doesn’t mention at all about the composition of the poster even though I’ve been asked to fix its arrangement at the very first glance Therefore, I added ‘composition’ as the new category and I PAGE received quite good feedback of how impressive it is except where the background pictures should be larger compared to what happen on top of it Fortunately, of all people asked, none of them misunderstood my poster’s intention They seemingly have made such good point which made me realize how an important message could lead up to something so much more valuable Normally, at first glance, the audience would feel sympathized for the pain the woman has to suffer with all that pool of blood Otherwise, abortion is a hot topic due to recent event, so it’s easily captivating and interesting to the public despite all the controversies it gets But then, what I truly could learn from is “be careful because normal people usually associate dark things with bad things”, which realistically speaking, is not entirely incorrect, and yet that is the basic color code of every advertising strategy they used out there Abortion is no longer a surprise to almost every human in existence, yet out of people asked are still stunned by how cruel the poster portrays Having an abortion is never a desire to any one, and the impact it brings astonished the audience with the influenced thought of having safe sex The appropriation of audience I’ve questioned is fairly chosen, most of them confidentially talks as they opening up for a debate about similar topics SELF-HELP Experienced as a designer Being a designer in general means you have to understand the root and core of an issue correctly in order to portray a client’s request in its most appropriate form without getting misleading backlash and controversies Plans for self-development If I can gain a good honors degree, I can choose to undertake further study at postgraduate level before starting a full-time work Courses last from one to three years and may be followed part time while I am developing freelance work Most postgraduate degrees incorporate a progression of studio-based modules, selfcoordinated learning and individual research, and in addition professional practice It is valuable to consider part-time preparing to update my abilities in utilizing computeraided design (CAD) This may help produce more work A decent knowledge of digital media and web showcasing aptitudes will be useful PAGE ... background to add more to the story Here’s my first poster look for further descriptions: PAGE After getting more feedback, I was told to reconstruct my poster s composition because he wanted to focus...
