TEACHING READING SKILLS • Reading is the most important skill for the learners of English as a second language • The objective of teaching reading is to help the learner to get information from the printed page effectively, rapidly and with full understanding and to make learners understand the process and develop the skill of reading • Reading is a process of sight, sound and sense It needs the coordination of eyes and brain to understand the written message knowledge of the linguistic and extra linguistic factors is essential Reading is a prediction-based activity Some basic skills for reading • Activities to drill reading comprehension is implemented/conducted through steps: Pre- reading, while- reading and post-reading Preliminary activities + Present the text/passage: provide students with important information Presentation requires brief introduction, make students interested in the text to help students have connection with their own background knowledge + Ways to introduce the text: * Lead-in: Teacher begins the text by introducing information to help students recognize what they are going to read (E.g: Today, we are going to read about ….)
