systems. One of the most common is a hissingsound when the steering wheel is turned and the car is not moving. This noise will bemost evident when turning the wheel while the brakes are applied.There is no relationship between this noise and steering performance. Do not replace thevalve unless the “hissing” noise is extremely objectionable. A replacement valve will alsohave a slight noise, and is not always a cure for the condition.56-8 GENERALSymptomRattling or chuckingnoise in rack andpinionProbable causeInterference with hoses from vehicle bodyLoose gear box bracketLoose tie-rod end ball jointRerouteRetightenRetightenRemedyWorn tie-rod end ball jointReplaceGroaning noise inoil pumpLow fluid levelAir in the fluidLoose pump mounting boltsReplenishBleed airRetighten56-9 GENERALSERVICE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDUREChecking Steering Wheel Free Play1.Check the steering wheel free play in the straight ahead position.Steering wheel free play [Standard value]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .0-30 mm (0-1.1 in.)2. If the measured value exceeds the standard value, check thelooseness of the yoke plug and the connections of followingparts; tie rod ball joint, steering shaft, universal joint, gear box,etc.Checking Steering Angle1. Place the front wheel on a turning radius gauge and measurethe steering angle.Steering angle [Standard value]Inner wheel. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .35°40' ± 1°30'Outer wheel. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .29°17'2. If the measured value is not within the standard value, inspectthe linkage so that it might not be improperly adjusted.Checking Tie Rod Ball Joint Starting Torque1.Mount two nuts on the ball joint, and then measure the ball jointstarting torque.Tie rod end ball joint starting torque[Standard value]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 50-250 Ncm (4-22 in. Ibs.)2.If the starting torque exceeds the standard value, replace the tierod end.NOTEEven if the starting torque is below limit of the standardvalue, the ball joint may be reused unless it has drag andexcessive play.56-10 [...]... 19 Tie rod end 20 Bushing A B C D E kg.cm Ib.ft 1 5-3 3 2 9-3 9 4 9-6 9 4 9-5 4 7 8-9 8 15 0-3 40 30 0-4 00 50 0-7 00 50 0-5 50 80 0-1 ,000 1 1-2 5 2 2-2 9 3 6-5 1 3 6-4 0 5 8-7 2 REMOVAL 1 Remove the both wheel and tire assembly 2 Remove the bolt coupling joint with the pinion 5 6-2 3 MANUAL STEERING GEAR BOX 3 Remove the tie rods from the knuckle arms, using Special Tool (0956 8-3 1000) 4 Remove the rack and pinion assembly from... 1 5-2 0 Nm (15 0-2 00 kg.cm, 1 1-1 4 Ib.ft) 4 After installing the steering shaft to the joint, install the shaft to the column support Tighten the bolt coupling steering shaft with joint Steering shaft column support tightening torque 9.8 Nm (100 kg.cm, 7.2 Ib.ft) Steering shaft joint tightening torque 1 5-2 0 Nm (15 0-2 00 kg.cm, 1 1-1 4 lb.ft) 5 Move the... pinion preload should be measured over the full stroke of the rack Total pinion preload 4 0-1 10 Ncm (3. 5-9 .5 Ib.in.) ± 180° or less from neutral 3 0-1 30 Ncm (2. 6-1 1.3 Ib.in.) ± 180° more from neutral Rack starting force 4 9-2 94 N (1 1-6 6 lb) 12 If the measured values are out of specification, replace the cushion rubber and yoke spring with new ones and readjust...
