400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA 15096-0001 SURFACE VEHICLE STANDARD Submitted for recognition as an American National Standard REV SEP1997 J2185 Issued Revised 1991-11 1997-09 Superseding J2185 NOV91 LIFE TEST FOR HEAVY-DUTY STORAGE BATTERIES Scope—This SAE Recommended Practice applies to 12 V storage batteries which operate in a voltage regulated charging system It simulates heavy-duty applications by subjecting the battery to deeper discharge and charge cycles than those encountered in starting a vehicle The deeper discharge and charge cycles in service may come from a combination of the following conditions: a Frequent occurrences of total electrical load exceeding the alternator output b Frequent occurrences of battery system supplying the electrical loads when the engine is not operating c Frequent occurrences of prolonged vehicle storage combined with high vehicle key-off loads Batteries will be classified into two types for this life test Type applies to batteries with reserve capacity of 200 or less Type applies to batteries with reserve capacity greater than 200 (“C” value for Type equals 25.0; “C” value for Type equals 50.0.) References—There are no referenced publications specified herein Testing procedure 3.1 Place the fully charged test battery in a water bath maintained at 50 °C ± 1.7 °C (122 °F ± °F) throughout the duration of the life test 3.2 The test is conducted on a weekly cycle as follows: 3.2.1 3.2.1.1 Alternate charging and discharging 26 times, starting with charge portion first Charge a b c d Time: 2.5 h Voltage: 14.80 V ± 0.05 V Type maximum current: 25.0 A ± 0.10 A Type maximum current: 50.0 A ± 0.10 A SAE Technical Standards Board Rules provide that: “This report is published by SAE to advance the state of technical and engineering sciences The use of this report is entirely voluntary, and its applicability and suitability for any particular use, including any patent infringement arising therefrom, is the sole responsibility of the user.” SAE reviews each technical report at least every five years at which time it may be reaffirmed, revised, or cancelled SAE invites your written comments and suggestions QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS DOCUMENT: (724) 772-8512 FAX: (724) 776-0243 TO PLACE A DOCUMENT ORDER; (724) 776-4970 FAX: (724) 776-0790 SAE WEB ADDRESS http://www.sae.org Copyright 1997 Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc All rights reserved Printed in U.S.A SAE J2185 Revised SEP1997 3.2.1.2 Discharge a Time: 1.0 h b Type discharge current: 25.0 A ± 0.10 A c Type discharge current: 50.0 A ± 0.10 A 3.2.2 Immediately after the 26th discharge, charge the battery as follows: a b c d 3.2.3 Time: 2.5 h Voltage: 14.80 V ± 0.05 V Type maximum current: 25.0 A ± 0.10 A Type maximum current: 50.0 A ± 0.10 A After 3.2.2, to eliminate electrolyte stratification, charge the battery as follows: a Time: 4.0 h b Type 1: 5.0 A ± 0.10 A or 1% of CCA rating c Type 2: 10.0 A ± 0.10 A or 1% of CCA rating 3.2.4 Rest the battery on open circuit for 57.5 to 68.0 h 3.2.5 Immediately after the rest period, discharge the battery at the specified CCA rating for 50 s The minimum battery voltage requirement at 50 s is 7.20 V 3.2.6 Rest the battery on open circuit until the start of the next weekly cycle 3.3 The life test shall be considered completed when the battery fails to meet the 7.20 V requirement during the 50 s discharge at the specified CCA rating or if the battery fails to sustain 10.5 V during the discharge cycles (3.2.1.2) The life shall be defined as the number of cycles that have successfully passed the weekly 50 s discharge requirements or cycles reached prior to failure to sustain 10.5 V during discharge Cycles that occur during the week of failure should not be counted in the total The cycle life may also be shown as total AH delivered by multiplying the number of discharge cycles by the discharge current corresponding to the battery type classification Notes 4.1 Marginal Indicia—The change bar (l) located in the left margin is for the convenience of the user in locating areas where technical revisions have been made to the previous issue of the report An (R) symbol to the left of the document title indicates a complete revision of the report PREPARED BY THE SAE STORAGE BATTERY STANDARDS COMMITTEE -2- SAE J2185 Revised SEP1997 Rationale—Not applicable Relationship of SAE Standard to ISO Standard—Not applicable Application—This SAE Recommended Practice applies to 12 V storage batteries which operate in a voltage regulated charging system It simulates heavy-duty applications by subjecting the battery to deeper discharge and charge cycles than those encountered in starting a vehicle The deeper discharge and charge cycles in service may come form a combination of the following conditions: a Frequent occurrences of total electrical load exceeding the alternator output b Frequent occurrences of battery system supplying the electrical loads when the engine is not operating c Frequent occurrences of prolonged vehicle storage combined with high vehicle key-off loads Batteries will be classified into two types for this life test Type applies to batteries with reserve capacity of 200 or less Type applies to batteries with reserve capacity greater than 200 (“C” value for Type equals 25.0; “C” value for Type equals 50.0.)
