has worked at Microsoft in the UK for more than nine years David fell in love with Small Business Server in 2003 when he was given the responsibility of engaging with journalists at the time of the launch of SBS in the UK For the next four years, David was responsible for improving SBS deliveries by Microsoft partners David has since has moved on to other roles inside Microsoft, but still continues to be part of the SBS community, helping users answer and resolve questions As well as his day job, David is also a writer: he has written for consumer publications Windows XP and Windows This book would not have been possible without the interaction of customers, the UK SBS group leads, SBSC partners who work together to improve IT for small businesses, and finally, my colleagues at Microsoft I could not have started this project without the support of all three members of my family who agreed to lose me for even more days each month Once I started the book, I relied on seven people to give their guidance to ensure the content was the most useful possible Simon was my ultimate customer guide helping me keep an eye on the owner manager's perspective Kate Bevan, a journalist, helped improve my writing style and reminded me to keep it simple The people who are in business supplying and maintaining SBS for their customers every day were Leslie Cupitt of Business Solutions IT, Vijay Riyat of iQuebed, Ian Watkins of Oxbridge Technology Ltd, Alex Stanier of IT Business, and Steve Davis of Sytec I need to thank Nick King at Microsoft for answering the questions I could not, and the staff at Packt Publishing Ltd, including Douglas, for the encouragement and guidance that finally led to this book being published This material is copyright and is licensed for the however, the Content Filtering option has the most useful settings to be changed Select Content Filtering and then click on Properties to bring up the settings for the content filtering In the Action tab, you will see options for spam By default, spam is deleted, which makes me nervous that I might miss an important email, so I would recommend making a spam quarantine email account and directing all spam above or (the spam rating) into the quarantine and rejecting mail that is very spam like in content, such as With these settings, if someone thinks an email might have been rejected as spam, you can log into that account and check it out Poor performance Poor performance is a nightmare scenario for most people managing a server as tracking down the culprit can be very complicated and time consuming I am not about to be able to simplify it, so I wanted to give you a first pass glance at a system Start Performance Monitor from Administrative Tools on the Start menu to get an overview of what your server is doing [ 378 ] This material is copyright and is licensed for the sole use by Richard Ostheimer on 6th June 2009 2205 hilda ave., , missoula, , 59801 Chapter 13 Check each section to find out if it is particularly active CPU, Disk Active Time, and Networks Utilization that are close to 100% are signs of stress on your SBS 2008 system High Maximum Frequency and Used Physical Memory are not normally signs of problems A high Hard Fault/sec for memory is something to worry about, especially if it is tied with high Disk Active Time as this would suggest not enough memory However, even when you know what area of the system is under stress the action is very dependent on the cause If you are unsure how to take this further, talk to a Small Business Specialist Community Microsoft Partner to gain some assistance [ 379 ] This material is copyright and is licensed for the sole use by Richard Ostheimer on 6th June 2009 2205 hilda ave., , missoula, , 59801 Introduction to SBS 2008 Management Summary In this chapter, you should have started to get an idea about how to simple maintenance for your SBS 2008 server You will need to check the reports on a daily basis and then drill further into issues to resolve them before they become a showstopper for your business All areas of maintenance have been touched upon so that you should be able to perform basic maintenance for security issues, backups, storage, networking, email, and performance This means that you now not only have a working server and network, but you are able to maintain this solution This is not the end of the journey though; this is the beginning of running your business differently with the aid of new technology If it is not used and maintained, it may not deliver the benefits you hoped for I hope you have enjoyed this process as much as I have If you have questions, I can always be contacted through my web site—http://davidoverton.com, but be aware that I cannot answer all questions, although I try [ 380 ] This material is copyright and is licensed for the sole use by Richard Ostheimer on 6th June 2009 2205 hilda ave., , missoula, , 59801 Index
