– we know now that Windows 10 S will be the ‘low-hassle’ version of WindowsWindows 10 Home/Pro, with its legacy Win32 support, will be the more powerful version Guess we’ll know in a year how this will change the status of Windows 10 S in the marketplace TECHADVISOR • JUNE2018 NEWS Sets to reappear in autumn Insider builds If you’ve been pining for a tabbed File Explorer app, your wait is almost over Sets is returning, reveals MARK HACHMAN I f you’re a fan of Windows 10’s tabbed Sets interface, you may want to sign up for the Windows Insider program this autumn, because Sets is back Microsoft has announced Windows 10 Insider Build 17618, a closed beta for the ‘Skip Ahead’ portion of the Windows Insider program Most Insiders follow the developer team working on the current build; that team is wrapping up the spring update (Redstone 4) that’s due in the next few weeks The ‘Skip Ahead’ Insiders follow another team of developers working on the next update, due in the autumn It’s in the autumn update, known as Redstone 5, where Sets will reappear We tested Sets late last year, JUNE2018 • TECHADVISOR NEWS which replaces the traditional ‘one app, one window’ user interface with something that looks more like a web browser Last autumn, the beta Sets interface allowed you to tack on an app as another tab, using UWP apps like Calendar, Edge, and Mail Now, the ‘Skip Ahead’ Insiders get to play with a beefed-up version of Sets, where support for some legacy Win32 apps has been added in In a month or so, the current Insiders will get it, too Now File Explorer, Notepad, Command Prompt, and PowerShell are also tabbed – great news for those who’ve been hoping for a tabbed File Explorer interface for years Microsoft also announced that Sets will be integrated once again with Timeline, Microsoft’s replacement for the virtual-machine-like Task View Timeline sees each disparate app you’re using for a project as an ‘activity’, and it gathers all your activities into one virtual place “When restoring your projects you’ll be prompted to restore related apps and web pages,” Microsoft said in a blog post “In Timeline you’ll see when a project has multiple activities associated with it.” While Windows users can switch from browser tab to browser tab using Ctrl + PgUp/PgDn, Windows users can switch from application tab to application tab using Ctrl + Win + Tab, or use Ctrl + Win + T to open a new tab (To open a Win32 app in a new tab, hold down Ctrl as you launch it; otherwise, it will launch in a new window.) how to double your screen space ven a generous 24in monitor can feel cramped when you’ve got multiple windows open on your desktop (and who doesn’t) It’s much worse if you’re confined to a laptop screen Fortunately, it’s simple enough to add a second monitor to your PC setup and spread out Any modern desktop or laptop PC has the graphics capability to run dual displays All that’s required is a second monitor You can get a very nice second screen for around £100 E 104 TECHADVISOR • JUNE2018 HOW TO Today’s monitors typically come with some combination of VGA, DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort ports In other words, you’ll have a couple options for how to connect the monitor to your PC While its common for VGA and DVI cables to come included with the display, you may have to purchase your HDMI or DisplayPort cable separately if you go that route Step The first part is easy – connect your second monitor to a power outlet and an available port on your PC Step Next, tell Windows how to manage the two monitors If Windows only appears on one monitor, or if the two of them aren’t working the way they should, right-click the desktop and select either Screen resolution (Windows andWindows 8) or Display settings (Windows 10) In the resulting dialog you can specify the displays’ arrangement The Multiple Displays pull-down menu allows you to control how the two screens work together Choosing Extend these displays will prompt Windows to treat your displays as one contiguous screen Once you’ve selected that setting, tell Windows which monitor is on the left or right by dragging the graphics to set up and get going in only a few minutes Here’s how W 106 TECHADVISOR • JUNE2018 HOW TO Using Settings on your PC When Windows 10 first launched there was a ‘Phone Companion’ app that was used to connect your smartphone This is due to be retired very soon, possibly by the time you read this, so instead there’s now a new section in the Settings menu To get started, tap the Windows key on your PC, then either type in Settings or click on the little cog icon in the bottom left of the screen You should find the Phone option on the top line between Devices and Network & Internet Click on it to begin On the next screen you’ll see a section entitled ‘Your phone’ in which there is a button marked Add a phone Click on this and another window will appear, asking you to enter your phone number Do so, then click the Send button A text message will arrive on your phone, containing a link to download Microsoft Edge (sneaky move, there, Microsoft) Although you may consider this an underhand way of tricking you into installing Microsoft’s browser on your phone, you need to this in order to use the features we’ll describe below Tapping on the link should take you to your phone’s app store, so install the app and you’ll be ready to move onto the next step When Microsoft Edge is installed, launch the app and sign in with your Microsoft account You’ll be given the option to sync your passwords You can either choose to this now, or later on if you prefer, but if you leave it then you won’t be able to share information across devices if it requires the aforementioned password JUNE2018 • TECHADVISOR 107 HOW TO Should you opt to sync passwords you’ll need to verify your Microsoft account by entering your account details With this done there’s just the final decision to make, which is whether to share your browsing history with Microsoft?
