during 14–17 December in New Delhi, India INDOCRYPT 2014 is the 15th edition of the INDOCRYPT series organized under the aegis of the Cryptology Research Society of India (CRSI) The conference has been organized by the Scientific Analysis Group (SAG), DRDO, New Delhi, India The INDOCRYPT series of conferences began in 2000 under the leadership of Prof Bimal Roy of Indian Statistical Institute In response to the call for papers, we received 101 submissions from around 30 countries around the globe The submission deadline was July 28, 2014 The review process was conducted in two stages: In the first stage, most papers were reviewed by at least four committee members, while papers from Program Committee members received at least five reviews This was followed by a week-long online discussion phase to decide on the acceptance of the submissions The Program Committee was also suitably aided in this tedious task by 94 external reviewers to be able to complete this as per schedule, which was on September Finally, 25 submissions were selected for presentation at the conference We would like to thank the Program Committee members and the external reviewers for giving every paper a fair assessment in such a short time The refereeing process resulted in 367 reviews, along with several comments during the discussion phase The authors had to revise their papers according to the suggestions of the referees and submit the camera-ready versions by September 22 We were delighted that Phillip Rogaway, Marc Joye, and Mar´ıa Naya-Plasencia agreed to deliver invited talks on several interesting topics of relevance to INDOCRYPT The program was also enriched to have Claude Carlet and Florian Mendel as Tutorial speakers on important areas of Cryptography, to make the conference Cryptology — is held every year in India This event has been one of the regular activities of the Cryptology Research Society of India (CRSI) to promote R&D in the area of Cryptology in the country The conference is hosted by different organizations including Academic as well as R&D organizations located across the country The Scientific Analysis Group (SAG), one of the research laboratories of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), organized the conference in the years 2003 and 2009 in collaboration with the Indian Statistical Institute (Delhi Centre) and Delhi University, respectively SAG was privileged to get an opportunity to organize INDOCRYPT 2014, the 15th conference in this series Since its inception, the INDOCRYPT has proved to be a powerful platform for researchers to meet, share their ideas with their peers, and work toward the growth f cryptology, especially in India For each edition of the conference in the past, the response from the cryptology research community has been overwhelming and the esponse for the current edition is no exception As is evident from the quality of submissions and the a high rate of rejections due to a transparent and rigorous process of reviewing, the conference has been keeping its standards with proceedings published by LNCS Even this year, the final set of selected papers amount to a net acceptance ratio of 25 percent On the first day of the conference, there were two Tutorials on the topics of S-Boxes and Hash Functions They were delivered by Claude Carlet of University of Paris, France and Florian Mendel of Graz University of Technology, Austria Both the Tutorials provided the participants with deep understanding of the chosen topics and stimulated discussions among others Beginning from the second day, the main conference had three invited talks and 25 paper presentations for days Maria Naya-Plasencia of Inria (France), Marc Joye of Technicolor (USA), and Phillip Rogaway of University of California (USA) delivered the invited talks on Lightweight Block Ciphers and Their Security, Recent Advances in ID-Based Encryption, and Advances in Authenticated Encryption, respectively We are grateful to all the Invited and Tutorial Speakers Organizing a conference having such wide ranging involvement and participation from international crypto community is not possible without the dedicated efforts of different committees drawn from the hosting and other support agencies The Organizing Committee took care of all the logistic, coordination, and financial aspects Elliptic Curves 417 The Index Calculus Algorithm We now present the full index calculus algorithm combined with the new variables introduced in Section We work in E(F2n ) := Ed1 ,d1 (F2n ) where n is prime and Ed1 ,d1 is a binary Edwards curve with parameters d2 = d1 We choose an integer m (for the number of points in a relation) and an integer l Considering F2n as a vector space over F2 we let V almost negligible, but checking the signs may incur some cost for large m When a relation exists (i.e., the random point R can be written as a sum of m points in the factor base) then there exists a that there is no 1/m! term here The entire purpose of this definition is to break the symmetry and hence increase the probability of relations Hence, the probability that a uniformly chosen point R ∈ E(F2n ) can be decomposed in this way is heuristically 2lm /2n = 1/2n−lm There is almost a paradox here: Of course if R = P1 + · · · + Pm then the points on the right hand side can be permuted and the point T2 can be added an even number of times, and hence the summation polynomial evaluated at t(R) is invariant under Dm On the other hand, if the points Pi are chosen from distinct factor bases Fi then one does not have the action by Sm , so why can one still work with the invariant variables (e1 , s2 , , sm )? To resolve this “paradox” we must distinguish the computation of the polynomial from the construction of the system of equations via Weil descent The summation polynomial does have an action by Dm (and Gm ), and so that action 420 S.D Galbraith and S.W Gebregiyorgis should be exploited When we the Weil descent and include the definitions of the factor bases Fi , we then introduce some new variables As noted by Huang et al [15], expressing the invariant variables with respect to the variables from the construction of the factor bases is non-trivial But it is this stage where we introduce symmetry-breaking It follows that (in the case m = 4) e1 = t1 + t2 + t3 + t4 = d1,0 + d1,1 θ + · · · + d1,l−1 θl−1 can be represented exactly as before But the other polynomials are less simple For example, s2 = (t21 + t1 )(t22 + t2 ) + · · · + (t23 + t3 )(t24 + t4 ) previously had highest term d2,4l−4 θ4l−4 but now has highest terms d2,4l−4 θ4l−4 + d2,4l−2 θ4l−2 + θ4l+2 Hence, we require one more variable than the previous case, and things get worse for higher degree terms So the symmetry breaking increases the probability of a relation but produces a harder system of polynomial equations to solve An additional consequence of this idea is that the factor base is now roughly m times larger than in the symmetric case So the number of relations required is increased by a factor m, and so the speedup over previous methods is actually by a factor approximately m!/m = (m−1)! Also, the cost of the linear algebra is increased by a factor m2 (though the system of linear equations is structured in blocks and so some optimisations may be possible) When using a point of order with binary Edwards curves, the linear algebra cost is reduced (in comparison with the naive method) by a factor (m/8)2 For large q and small n, it seems that symmetry-breaking is not a useful idea, as the increase in number of variables becomes a huge problem that is not compensated by the (m − 1)! factor However, for small q and large n the situation is less clear To determine whether the idea is a good one, it is necessary to perform some experiments (see Section 6) SAT Solvers Shantz and Teske [19] discuss a standard idea [2,22,23] that they call the “hybrid method”, which is to partially evaluate the system at some random points before applying Gră obner basis algorithms They argue (Section 5.2) that it is better to just use the “delta method” (n − ml > 0), where m is the number points in a relation and 2l is the size of the factor base The main observation of Shantz and Teske [19] is that using smaller l speeds up the Gră obner basis computation at the cost of decreasing the probability of getting a relation So, they try to find such an optimal l value Our choice of coordinates for binary Edwards curves helps us lower the degree of our systems As a result we were able to make successful experiments for m = and l {3, 4} using Gră obner basis algorithms, as reported in Table For l > 4, values such that n−ml > suffered high running times as the result of increased number of variables coming from our invariant variables To increase the range for these methods, we investigated other approaches to solving systems of multivariate polynomial equations over a binary field In particular, we experimented with SAT solvers We used Minisat 2.1 [21], coupled Summation Polynomial Algorithms for Elliptic Curves 421 with the Magma system for converting the polynomial system into conjunctive normal form (CNF) On the positive side, our experiments show that SAT solvers can be faster and, more importantly, handle larger range of values for l As is shown in Table 1, we can of variables) Our hope is to get better experimental results from exploiting the symmetries of binary Edwards curves Experiment 1: For the summation polynomials we use the variables e1 , e2 , , em , which are invariants under the group Dm = (Z/2Z)m−1 Sm The factor base is defined with respect to a fixed vector space of dimension l Experiment 2: For the summation polynomials we use the variables is seen to reduce the computational costs Indeed, we can go up to l = with reasonable running time for some n, which is further than [15] The degree of regularity stays ≤ in both cases Table considers m = 4, which was not done in [15] For the sake of comparison, we gather some data for experiment and experiment (the data for experiment already appeared in Table 1) Again, exploiting greater symmetry (experiment 2) gives a significant decrease in the running times, and the degree of regularity Dreg is slightly decreased The expected degree of regularity for m = 4, stated in [18], is m2 + = 17 The table shows that our choice of coordinates makes the case m = much more feasible Our idea of symmetry breaking (experiment 3) is investigated in Table for m = Some of the numbers in the second column already appeared in Table Recall that the relation probability is increased by a factor 3! = in this case, so one should multiply the timings in the right hand column by (m − 1)! = to compare overall algorithm speeds The experiments are not fully conclusive (and there are a few “outlier” values that should be ignored), but they suggest that symmetry-breaking can give a speedup in many cases when n is large For larger values of n, the degree of regularity Dreg is often when using symmetry-breaking while it is for most values in experiment The reason for this is unclear, but we believe that the performance we observe is partially explained by the fact that the degree of regularity stayed at as n grows More discussion is given in the full version of the paper Conclusions We have suggested that binary Edwards curves are most suitable for obtaining coordinates invariant under the action of a relatively large group Faug`ere et al [9] studied Edwards curves in the non-binary case and showed how the symmetries can be used to speed-up point decomposition We show that these ideas are equally applicable in the binary case The idea of a factor base that breaks symmetry allows to maximize the probability of finding a relation For large enough n (keeping m and l fixed) this choice can give a small speed-up compared with previous methods SAT solvers often work better than Gră obner methods, especially in the case when the system of equations has a solution with low hamming weight They are non-deterministic and the running time varies widely depending on inputs Unfortunately, most of the time SAT solvers are slow (for example, because the system of equations does not have any solutions) We suggest an early abort strategy that may still make SAT solvers a useful approach We conclude by analysing whether these algorithms are likely to be effective for ECDLP instances in E(F2n ) when n > 100 The best we can seem to hope for in practice is m = and l ≤ 10 Since the probability of a relation is roughly 2lm /2n , so the number of trials needed to find a relation is at least 426 S.D Galbraith and S.W Gebregiyorgis √ 2n /2ml ≥ 2n−40 ≥ 2n Since solving a system of equations is much slower than a group operation, we conclude that our methods are worse than Pollard rho This is true even in the case of static-Diffie-Hellman, when only one relation is required to be found Hence, we conclude that elliptic curves in characteristic are safe against these sorts of attacks for the moment, though one of course has to be careful of other “Weil descent” particular in Schoof’s algorithm for calculating the number of points of an elliptic curve [23], and in the analysis of the security of cryptosystems relying on the hardness of the discrete logarithm in the group of points of an elliptic curve [16,17] In addition, cryptosystems relying on the hardness of computing an isogeny between elliptic curves have been proposed in the context of quantum-safe cryptography [5,7,15,22,26] For the time being, they perform significantly worse than other quantum-safe cryptosystems such as those based on the hardness of lattice problems However, the schemes are worth studying since they provide an alternative to the few quantum-resistant cryptosystems available today In the context of classical computing, the problem of finding an isogeny between two defined over a finite field √ Fq and having the same endomorphism ring in subexponential time Lq (1/2, 3/2) This result is valid under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, and relies on computations in the class group of the common endomorphism ring of the curves The fact that this class group in an abelian group is crucial since it allows one to reduce this task to a hidden abelian shift problem In the supersingular case, the class group of the endomorphism ring is no longer abelian, thus preventing a direct adaptation of this method The fastest known method for finding an isogeny between two isogenous supersingular elliptic curve is a (quantum) search amongst all isogenous curves, running ˜ 1/2 ) The algorithm of Childs, Jao and Soukharev [6] leads directly to in O(p attacks against cryptosystems relying on the difficulty of finding an isogeny between ordinary curves [7,22,26], but those relying on the hardness of computing isogenies between supersingular curves [5,15] remain unaffected to this date Contribution Our main contribution is the description of a quantum algorithm for computing an isogeny between two given supersingular curves defined over a ˜ 1/4 ) Moreover, defined over Fq An isogeny φ : E1 → E2 is a non-constant rational map defined over Fq which is also a group homomorphism from E1 to E2 Two curves are isogenous over Fq if and only if they have the same number of points over Fq (see [28]) Two curves over Fq are said to be isomorphic over Fq if there is an Fq -isomorphism between their group of points Two such curves have the same j-invariant given by j := 1728 4a34a +27b2 In this paper, we treat isogenies as mapping between (representatives of) Fq -isomorphism classes 430 J.-F Biasse et al of elliptic curves In other words, given two j-invariants j1 , j2 ∈ Fq , we wish to construct an isogeny between (any) two elliptic curves E1 , E2 over Fq having jinvariant j1 (respectively j2 ) Such an isogeny exists if and only if Φ (j1 , j2 ) = for some , where Φ (X, Y ) is the -th modular polynomial Let E be an elliptic curve defined over Fq An isogeny between E and itself defined over Fqn for some n > is called an endomorphism of E The set of endomorphisms of E is a ring that we denote by End(E) For each integer m, the multiplication by m map on E is an endomorphism Therefore, we always have Z ⊆ End(E) Moreover, to each isogeny φ : E1 → E2 corresponds an isogeny φ : E2 → E1 called its dual isogeny It satisfies φ ◦ φ = [m] where m = deg(φ) For elliptic curves over a finite field, we know that Z End(E) In this particular case, End(E) is either an order in an imaginary quadratic field (and has Z-rank 2) or an order in a quaternion algebra ramified at p and ∞ (and has Z-rank 4) In the former case, E is said to be ordinary while in the latter it is called supersingular An order O in a field K such that [K : Q] = n is a subring of K which is a Z-module of rank n The notion of ideal of O can be generalized to fractional ideals, which are sets of the form a = d1 I where I is an ideal of O and d ∈ Z>0 The invertible fractional ideals form a multiplicative group I, having a subgroup consisting of the invertible principal ideals P The ideal class group Cl(O) is by definition Cl(O) := I/P In Cl(O), we identity two fractional ideals a, b if there is α ∈ K such that b = (α)a The ideal class group is finite and its cardinality is called the class number hO of O For a quadratic order O, the class number satisfies hO ≤ |Δ| log |Δ|, where Δ is the discriminant of O The endomorphism ring of an elliptic curve plays a crucial role in most algorithms for computing isogenies between curves The class group of End(E) acts transitively on isomorphism classes of elliptic curves (that is, on j-invariants of curves) having the same endomorphism ring More precisely, the class of an ideal a ⊆ O acts on the isomorphism class of curve E with End(E) O via an isogeny of degree N (a) (the algebraic norm of a) Likewise, each isogeny ϕ : E → E where End(E) = End(E ) O corresponds (up to isomorphism) to the class of an ideal in O From an ideal a and the -torsion (where = N (a)), one can recover the kernel of ϕ, and then using V´elu’s formulae [29], one can derive the corresponding isogeny Given > prime, the -isogeny graph between (isomorphism classes of) elliptic curves defined over Fq is a graph whose vertices are the j-invariants of curves defined over Fq having an edge between j1 and j2 if and only if there exists an -isogeny φ between some two curves E1 , E2 defined over Fq having jinvariant j1 (respectively j2 ) Note that while the curves E1 and E2 are required q, the -isogeny graph to be defined over Fq , the isogeny φ is not When is connected In this case, finding an isogeny between E1 and E2 amounts to finding a path between the j-invariant j1 of E1 and the j-invariant j2 of E2 in the -isogeny graph Most algorithms for finding an isogeny between two curves perform a random walk in the -isogeny graph for some small Our method is based on this strategy A Quantum Algorithm for Computing Isogenies between Supersingular 431 High Level Description of the Algorithm Our algorithm to find an isogeny between supersingular curves E, E defined over Fq of characteristic p is based on the approach of Galbraith and Delfs [9], which exploits the fact that it is easier to find an isogeny between supersingular curves when they are defined over Fp The first step consists of finding an isogeny between E and E1 (respectively between E and E2 ) where E1 , E2 are defined over Fp On a quantum computer, we achieve a quadratic speedup for this first step using Grover’s algorithm [13] We then present a novel subexponential time quantum algorithm to find an isogeny between E1 and E2 All isomorphism classes of supersingular curves over Fq admit a representative defined over Fp2 As pointed out in [9], it is a well-known result that the number of supersingular j-invariants (that is, of isomorphism classes of supersingular curves defined over Fp2 ) is ⎧ ⎪ ⎨0 if p ≡ mod 12, p + if p ≡ 5, mod 12, #Sp2 = ⎪ 12 ⎩ if p ≡ 11 mod 12, where Sp2 is the set of supersingular j-invariants in
