field on planet Taking part in the WTO marked a new step for Vietnam's international integration WTO creates big opportunities for Vietnam's enterprises, beside challenges Vietnam’s agriculture is affected strongly by this event Thuan Phat company is a joint venture company specializing in manufacturing, processing and trading in fruit and vegetables, agricultural products export Like other enterprises, Thuan Phat company’s producing and trading activities in general and its fruit and vegetable export activities in particular are significantly affected by Vietnam’s entry into the WTO The corporation has a lot of opportunities to promote manufacturing and exports because markets are expanding; tariff barriers are cut down and demand on fruits and vegetables is increasing However, it also has to face enormous challenges into the international economic word Those are fluctuation and tough competition of the market economy Simultaneously, it has to accept strict international regulations technical barriers, and open market and face difficulties in raw materials, climate, weather, material and labor prices After my intership fied study trip at Thuan Phat company, I have a good opportunity to learn about its production and trading operation With a desire to have deeper knowledge in the corporation’s fruit and vegetable export field, as well as a desire to make some suggestions to improve activity in the future, I chose the subject “Fruit and vegetables export activities at Thuan Phat Export and Import joint stock company” The report is divided into chapters: readers CHAPTER I: AN OVERVIEW OF THUAN PHAT EXPORT AND IMPORT JOINT STOCK COMPANY 1.1 Introduction of Thuan Phat Export and Import Joint Stock Company Thuan Phat Export and Import Joint Stock Company has abbreviated name THUAN PHAT IMEXJSC with head offices 12 number Van Troi Nguyen Industrial Zone, Hung Yen Manufactory Di Su distance, My Hao district, Hung Yen provincial Email 21/10/2005 and revised 1/2/2008 Thuan Phat company started in 2005 from Thuan Phat coporation limited The company was initial production and consumption of domestic goods then expand business exporting goods abroad and renamed the company Thuan Phat Export and Import Joint Stock Company from 1/2/2008 The management system of THUAN PHAT IMEXJSC has advanced quality management system will ensure quality of products to meet consumers' demand, improve competitiveness of companies It is especially important to export companies Awaking of this, Thuan Phat appllied quality management system fact because of being import export company, when quantity of transaction is more and more, ability in capital stagnant In addition, large capital helps the company invest for modern equipment in order to meet needs in quality of product to export The corporation’s main business activities include:  Agriculture production, processing, import- export and local sales of vegetables, fruit, agro-forestry commodities, seafood, foodstuff and drinks, essential oils, assorted seeds of tropical vegetables, fruit, flowers; fertilizer and chemical products, material and packaging for agro-production and food processing; machinery and equipments, spare-parts, vehicles, handicrafts, household goods,  Research and transfer of technology, technical training in processing of vegetables and fruit, agro-forestry products  Providing consultant service for investment in agricultural processing sector  Financial business and other business related to stock market  Other business related to services such as logistics, port handling, warehouses, transportation and transport agent, real estate, industrial and civil building, hotel, and office renting Chart 1.1 Thuan department is responsible for importing of machinery, dayserial and the export company's goods Accounting department is responsible for planning revenues and expenditures the company's annual financial It’s advising the managing Director for revening and expendituring of the company Factory is the place to bear all production activities of all products Beside, the research and technology development produce the most and least cost 1.2 Export and Import department Establish on since 2007, Export and Import Department was three members from the Business Department The now, it has members whom responsible for building import and export activities The Export and Import Department of foreign trade contracts and procedures professional import and export regulations It’s in the market at home and abroad to plan and organize the import-export business plan and other relevant plans of the Company It import and export business, contract sign contracts and brand management of the company Beside, Import and Export Department made monitor and report to the Board of Directors of commercial promotion, brand promotion Registering trademark in the country and other countries which entry the market The relevant units introduced, providing the products and services of the company The trade fairs, market surveys, professional exchange, collect information to expand the international market CHAPTER II: FRUIT AND VEGETABLE EXPORT ACTIVITIES AT THUAN PHAT EXPORT AND IMPORT JOINT STOCK COMPANY 2.1 Process of fruit and vegetables export at Thuan Phat Imexjsc The company trades in a lot of commodities, each unit trades some suitable ones The company’s commodities include fresh, dry-salt, canned, frozen fruit and vegetables, and condensed juice The company’s products are agricultural so they have seasonableness, then the business is affected by the characteristic As other industry exports in maket, Thuan Phat company also carries out export activities following a process from researching markets, defining commodities, finding out partners, planning project on export, dealing and negotiating The export process will be illustrated in the chart below: Chart 2.1 activities Implementing export contract is the most complicated and vital Thuan Phat company has to carry out according to international customs and law After mobilizing inputs for exporting, Thuan Phat bases on sales contract to implement testing on quantity and quality of goods, in order to adjust suitably for contract Next, preparing export documents, customs clearnce, bringing products to a certain destination The company often exports by sea (at Haiphong port) or air (at Noibai airport) The company present document and bills eligible commodity for doing customs procedure When the custom agree good export , the Distribution Department check goods before deleveling for customer The company always export with FOB so has not to charter and selling insurance for products Almost all the payment transactions of the company are made by L/C If the customer discovered the goods don’t standards and the conditions of the signed contract Customer request and return the goods or discount goods The company accept terms in the contracts when the company accord to the term with the parties 2.2 Export market So far now, the company exported fruit and vegetables into more than 40 markets all over the world In there, the company's major export markets are USA, EU, Russia, China, Japan, Singapore, Korea, and Taiwan And the markets are spreading over areas in the worlds: In Asia, the company normally export fruit and vegetables to ASEAN nationals such as: Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippine, Laos and other countries: China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Arab, Jordan, Pakistan, Syria, Sri Lanka In Europe, the company normally export fruit and vegetables to German, Great Britain, France, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Ireland Other countries: Russia, Turkey, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Mondovi, Hungary, Norway, Hungary, Latonia, Latvia, Rumania, America: United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia: New Zealand and Africa: Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, Senegal The company’s export markets are plentiful and diversified Each market with distinct characteristics in consumer habits and has different regulations, this create big challenge in expanding and developing markets of the company In all these cases the export sales continued to increase over the years Group Fresh fruit and vegetables cucumber, and Chinese pea The principal types of fruit: avocado, segment fruits (orange, tangerine, shaddock, lemon), banana, pineapple, litchi, and longan Structure of groups showed that Thuan Phat concentrated mainly on tinned fruit and vegetables Exporting tinned fruit and vegetables accounted for a large ratio and was quite stable, an average of approximately more than 56% total export value of fruit and vegetables The next were frozen ones, but only made up 20.5% Commodities occupied small ratios were fresh ones, an average of 12.4% and dry-salt ones, an average of 11% Frozen fruit and vegetables was a group having stable export value in the past time Its ratio was about 19- 22% in Thuan Phat’s total export value of fruit and vegetables In 2011, its export value was highest, gained 5,556,968 USD and accounted for 22% in total export value of fruit and vegetables Fresh fruit and vegetables requires highly in preservation when exporting, because characteristics of this goods are short time, difficult to maintain and transport Those are characteristics make them restrict to export Its export value occupied a little ratio in the structure of the company's fruit and vegetables export (an average of 12.4%), and trended to reduce gradually This induces the company to face an enormous challenge because now markets requires vegetables grown according to green technology to ensure food hygiene The company deployed the green vegetables project; however, its scale was not large Dry-salt fruit and vegetables was the group accounting for the smallest density in structure of the company’s fruit and vegetables export value in period of 2009-2011 However, it occupied a larger and larger density, and gained the biggest value being 3,637,288 USD in 2011, made up 14.4%, and passed fresh fruit and vegetables in export value 2.4 Competitors Now there are a lot of enterprises trading in fruit and vegetables, so the competition is naturally Thuan Phat competitors are both domestic and foreign companies At present, there are over 300 companies trading in this field, among them are several considerable ones such as Dong Nai food and agricultural products import- Export Company, Lam Dong food and agricultural products joint stock company, Thanh Long Hoang Hau limited company, Truong Phat limited company, Hai Phong logistics and import- export company, Bao Thanh trade and service limited company, Long An agricultural, aquatic products and sea food processing limited company Chinese, Thai, Malaysian, North African, South African, New Zealand, Chilean, Brazilian export companies are toughest competitors Quality and price are two elements making Vietnamese companies weaker in competition Especially, Chinese enterprises will be biggest competitors in the future, because they have advantage in labor, and technology in growing, cropping, preserving, processing higher than Vietnam, besides they have diversity of model and type, equality in specification 2.5 Achievements and limitations of export activities at Thuan Phat company 2.5.1 Achivements THUAN PHAT IMEXJSC plays an important role in developing the economy in gereral and developing rural agriculture in particular From the analysis of the fruit and vegetable export activities at THUAN PHAT IMEXJSC, we can see there are some achivements as below: First, demand for agricultural products in the world is increasing Export markets have ben expanding more and more The company had commercial relations with regional market, especially China, and established relations with EU It also conquered Russian market, expanded into United States market and held other markets Second, Vietnam is a country with many agricultural products and takes advantage of cheaper labor in the dometic market The goods export are very diverse with many kinds and the company’s prices are competitive compared to other companies in the international market Third,the company has a high prestige in commercial relations and is trying to find out new partners, keep familiar clients and widen its export markets Fourth, the products company are safety for consumers because its applied natual the products HACCP management system which controls food safety during production and processing preventive in order to ensure food safety and food quality through the analysis of hazards and implementing measures -The finally, traditional branches such as tinned fruits and vegetables, processed agricultural products were maintained and developed strongly, at the same time, developed frozen commodities 2.5.2 Limitations Beside the achievements, Thuan Phat company have also some limitations in their export activities First, export maket is very difficult Export of fruits and vegetables is growing in the market such as China, Korea, Japan, the Untied States and the EU which is very hard By request off the market fairly stringent, only once or a sign containing products as all subsequent contracts are difficult to penetrate, even at risk to lost market The market request security goods and many goods standerd Second, lack of modern technology Most of the machinery and technology of Thuan Phat are outdated and they should be improved The productivity and the life goods are going up commensurate Thirtly, competitors, Vietnam is one of the top five fruit and vgetable exporters the most in the word This is a advantage but also disadvantage with the company Because the competitors foreign and home are very strong The company have to made many difference This is a great pressue for requiring company Fourth , the input goods.Input goods supply is uneven in quality caused difficulties companies At times, the markets are available but there aren’t enough fruits and vegetable for selling Because the supplies aren’t sufficient due to the bad weather in the both the North and South of Vietnam Thuan Phat company haven’t yet been bought the inputs by collecting and garthering the farmers in closed model Finally, Lack strategies marketing The company has not specific maketing building market potential And, the common characteristics of each market produce and market products to suit each customer CHAPTER 3: RECOMMENDATIONS TO PROMOTE FRUIT AND VEGETBLE EXPORT ACTIVITIES AT THUAN PHAT IMEXJSC 3.1 To Thuan Phat company Agricultural development of Vietnam are mainly focuses on industrialization and modernization According to that, strategies for Vietnam's fruits and vegetables industry is developing new types of vegetables such as bean, maize, bamboo sprout, mushroom….which have got highly nutritional value, various consumer markets, beside traditional vegetables, and continuously developing kinds of fruit which have good export ability such as litchi, longan, pineapple Following above directions, Vietnam's agriculture industry in general, or fruits and vegetables in particular can ensure national food security, enough raw materials for production, increasing export value at once Therefore, Thuan Phat Company need improve the whole system for export activities Offering solutions have to be considered comprehensively from all aspects relating to its manufacturing and trading activities, including elements that the company can control such as its product lines, human resources, promotion activities, capital, and elements of macroeconomics such as monetary policy, business law… Beside, I see there are some below: Firth, Effectively using sources capital The effective use of capital sources is very important Because it has direct influence on the costs and profit of a firm afterward Costs of capital are affected a lot by many factors such as interest rate, exchange rate and some other macroeconomic factors like inflation rate and macro policies The unfavorable movement of those factors may put the firm at risk; hence the enterprise needs to equip itself about how to manage risk In other word, the firm should employ a risk management staff to minimize, monitor and control the probability of unexpected events Furthermore, due to its nature of business, import and export activities, the firm has to care much about the exchange rates and interest rates’ fluctuation overtime Hence, it should hedge those risks by exploiting some derivative securities such as spot, forward, options and futures contracts Secondly, Resolution on capital and finance Every enterprises, capital is important element in production and trading The diversity of export markets makes have a lot of difficulty in exporting to countries That have disadvantage payment terms and require the company having got a great capital quantity Meanwhile, the company’s member units have a little capital or lack of capitals Therefore, in order that production and trading activities take place uninterruptedly and effectively The company needs to mobilize capitals at home and abroad Some capital mobilizing form that the company can fulfill as following: Borrowing from banks, borrowing government credit through rural development banks system, merchant banks and mobilizing capital from personnel by means of issuing bond In addition, the staff makes such a financial contribution, their sense of responsibility on work are raised Thirtly, to have specific strategic for each kind of markets In the future, the company will focus on markets which have great export value and develop potential markets According to this orientation, the company's markets are divided into two groups: Firstly, including small markets, the market company has account for about -10% percent of the total number of markets but occupy up to 70-80 percent of total export value For the company, these are markets which have over one million USD value such as Russia, China, United States, EU, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore Secondly, it is market group which only holds five percent of total export value The company needs to have specific strategies for each market group The company must have suitable methods to maintain stable growth and effective operation in the first group Besides, markets of the third groups need to be maintained because these are markets which have weak consumption now or have the initial difficulties due to prohibition of legal environment, but have big potentiality in the future Thus, the company needs to have more sensible resolution in order to maintain these markets, facilitate for enlarging in the future, and avoid losing markets because when entering any market, the company will waste large expenses In order to implement that, the company must consider consumption ability on every market and its own financial resources Then, bring out list of markets which can be expand The firstly, group's markets have enormous export value It is necessary to classify markets having saturated consumption ability, and enormous but not saturated one Specifically, United State is a big import market of the company The second group's markets such as Canada, New Zealand, India, Eastern European countries, are markets having potentiality to develop, so the company need to implement well in exploiting market activities in order to develop these potential markets 3.2 To the Distribution Section Thuan Phat Company ought to have detail export plan for each commodity and bring out plan on manufacturing and processing conformably Therefore, Thuan Phat company collects information of every market on quantity, quality, type, price… of each good has to put in the top priority The tinned products are main commodities The average of annual export value is up to 75% of total fruits and vegetables export value Tinned fruits and vegetables include a lot of kinds such as tinned pineapple, tinned rambutan Figures of consumption in recent , show that trend in using canned commodities is increasing quite rapidly, especially in developed countries such as Japan, United States, and EU These commodities are high in nutritional value, long in preservation and overcome wrong time of fruit and vegetables Furthermore, these are tropical fruit and vegetable which above countries are not available Thus, the company defined that tinned fruit and vegetables will still be main export commodities in the future, and its export value will increase continuously With some goods which accounted for a small share in exporting as fresh, frozen fruit and vegetables, the company planned to invest satisfactorily Because these commodities were forecasted to be had an enormous consumption For example, fresh fruits and vegetables which are exported to China, Russia, EU Those are highly prospective, so initially, the company had suitable investment with green vegetables model in order to increase their export value Tables 3.1 Thuan Phat’s products collection Section Inputs' quality depends greatly on outputs' quality Thuan Phat has to close control of raw materials In facts, the company concentrated on guaranteeing materials to produce Specifically, the company invested farmers in supplying of seeds, capitals and guiding to care technique and ensuring to underwrite outputs in order to make farmers knit long and keep their my on their production That is an accurate heading that the company needs implementing continuously in the next time In addition, the company has to raise the sense of initiative in associating with scientists for catch up with new, high quality and productivity seeds Futher, the company has choice in selecting buy original materials how to best meet customer needs Besides, the company will building plans for cooperation with growers to get the products in accordance and with the requirements of the business But the company need also as avoid shortage of inputs 3.4 To the Section Standardizing packing will facilitate for goods production and circulation Packing not only is thing for containing and maintaining commodities and creating good conditions to transport goods But, Thuan Phat company also plays a role as an intermediary between goods and customers Besides, it has advertising and consumer guiding function Therefore, the company must care of investing in packing sector Accordingly, the company needs fulfill to marking for commodities Which helps the company's products different with other companies' ones A type of special marking is code and bar code On the one hand, it makes the company raising productivity and get effect in selling and administrating So customers will have advantages in choosing and consuming In addition, the company must notice to label on commodities and standardize a number of wrapping pellicle and way of opening products… 3.5 To Export and Import Department Export and Import enterprises need to improve professional skills of foreign The staff should be periodically trained and update with new national as well as international legal international trade Additionally, they should be smart and flexible in grasping business opportunities along with carefully negotiating an agreement It’s necessary to establish a legal department to tighten the international trading process and reduced potential risk to the minimum Beside, Export and Import Dapertment should be move activite in managing their foreign currency reserves and avoiding foreign exchange risk 3.5.1 Improving the staffs All employees improve their foreign language and learn about methods export The specific export or from determining the target market - even after transfer to the customer If the company made good impression relationships with customers reputation with credit and corporate image When exporting to large markets, the company will face to tough competition pressure Therefore, a key issue is to set up export and import staff having high profession, experience in signing export contracts, ability in catching up and processing and forecasting changes of markets Accordingly, all the staffs in the company has to research and manufacture with together skilled technical workers have enough ability to approach and work expertly in equipment, new modern technology Next, building to create fair competition environment among employees, encourage them to develop initiative, push their dynamism and creation 3.5.2 Establishing trade name for the company's commodities Trade name is worthing invisible property for every enterprise It is very important element, especially in international economic integration period The products' trade name is not easy and to be known by many people is as well However, the company will have great advantage in business The company needs concentrating on establishing, registering its products' trade name, trademark If so, the company raises competitiveness on the company's fruits and vegetables in the world markets The company's export activities are implementing by many units In fact, there are only a little bit units using the company's common trade name Almost units have individual trade name, not unify with the company's one In the next time, the company must quickly establish a compulsory regulation to using a united trade name in order to ensure competitiveness for the company's products At that time, any product of members has to write the company's common trade name and only write manufacturing unit's name, related criterion by letters as well In that case, the company's trade name will be consolidated, at that makes members' export activities easier 3.5.3 Building firmm relations with customers Building firm relations with customers is like customers caring Good customer – caring officers will know through about their’s customer business features Then advise them the best ways avoid and prevent risk international trade Firm relation bases can help every business to most closely approach their clients and business which dramatically helps reduced hazard problems in trading CONCLUSION Fruits and vegetable market is a huge market with the currently increasing demand It is really attractive market for Vietnam’s fruits and vegetable export in general’s However, due to stricter and stricter regulations on food safety of import countries and together with difficulties of integration period The company will have to try its utmost to get a solid foothold in markets The report is my research on the fruits and vegetable export and several
