HISTORY OF SNOWDONIA Snowdonia was actually an exceedingly important settlement for the area throughout much of history It has many prehistoric artifacts that date back to the earliest days of humanity The history of Snowdonia National Park is closely linked to the history of Snowdonia and Wales The Snowdonia National Park was formally established in October 1951 An Iron Age Attraction The Roman Occupation and Snowdonia’s Castle Heritage Plenty of Heritage Sites in Snowdonia An Iron Age Attraction • Snodonia contains a town know as Tre’r Ceiri, the name means Town of Giants • It’s one of most spectacular in Wales It was first built around 200BC • It is surrounded by stone walls that are largerly intact and which reach up meters in some places • Within the walls are ruins of about 150 stone house Some picture about The Town of Giant The Roman Occupation and Snowdonia’s Castle Heritage • The Roman first arrived in the north of Wales by 77AD • From the Roman occupation through much of the time afterward, Snowdonia served as a natural location for castles of the ruling monarchs in each era This can be seen in the large of number of castles that dot the scenic countryside within the national park Tonmen y mur One of the most complete Roman military sites in Britain, Tomen y Mur was established in order to secure Roman power in Wales An auxiliary fort like this, constructed around AD 77 by Governor Agricola, was designed to protect the Roman communication and supply network It was connected to other forts such as Segontium (Caernarfon) andCanovium (Caerhun) by this extensive road system Caer Gai Roman Fort Caer Gai is a 1st century Roman earthwork fort, occupied until the mid-2nd century According to tradition the fort was used by King Arthur after the Romans left Britain in the 5th century Plenty of Heritage Sites in Snowdonia Throughout the ages, the area has evolved to meet the needs of the local population and the changing world Therefore, the area is also home to a large number of castles and religious buildings from the earliest moments of modern civilization Dolbadarn Castle is a fortification built by the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great during the early 13th century, at the base of the Llabveris Pass, in North Wales The castle was important both military and as a symbol of Llywelyn’s power and authority The Dinorwic Slate Quarry is a large former slate quarry, now home to the Welsh National Slate Museum, located between the villages of Llanberis and Dinorwig in North Wales It was the second largest slate quarry in Wales, indeed in the world, after the one in neighbouring Penrhyn Llanrhychwyn Church High above the Conwy Valley, beside a remote farmyard, stands St Rhychwyn’s – one of the oldest and loveliest churches in Wales According to tradition, it was founded in the 6th century by Rhychwyn, one of the sons of Helig ap Glannog – a Welsh prince who ruled a tract of land that stretched all the way to Puffin Island off the east coast of Anglesey Question: When was the Snowdonia National Park established ?
