Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.

Women in Britain are better off today than they used to be At the beginning of the 19 th century, women seem to have

almost no rights at all They could not vote, or even sign a contract Their marriages were arranged by their parents They were

Trang 4

once kept at home and if they were allowed to work, they were never given responsible jobs It is strange to think that, as far as

we know, most women were happy with that situation.

Today the position is quite different Women now can vote and choose their own husbands In 1970, a law was passed to give them an equal share of property in the case of divorce, and in the same year the Equal Pay Act gave them the right to get equal payment with men for work of equal value.

Despite these changes, there is no doubt that there are still great differences in status between men and women Many

employers seem to ignore the Equal Pay Act It is also more difficult for a woman to get promotion than a man does.

There is sex distinction in England although it has not been as serious as it was More and more women go out to work, earn more money, get high positions in the society, and live independently However, there are two great problems to solve The first problem is men's attitude They always think that women are lower in rank and are the weaker sex We do not know exactly how long it will take them to change their mind And the other problem which is much more difficult is women's attitude They

should be ready to struggle to change their fate.

Ocean water plays an indispensable role in supporting life The great ocean basins hold about 300million cubic miles of water From this vast amount, about 80,000 cubic miles of water are sucked into theatmosphere each year by evaporation and returned by precipitation and drainage to the ocean More than

24,000 cubic miles of rain descend annually upon the continents This vast amount is required to replenish the lakes and streams, springs and water tables on which all flora and fauna are dependent.

Thus, the hydrosphere permits organic existence

Trang 7

The hydrosphere has strange characteristics because water has properties unlike those of any otherliquid One anomaly is that water upon freezing expands by about 9 percent, whereas most liquids contract

on cooling For this reason, ice floats on water bodies instead of sinking to the bottom If the ice sank, thehydrosphere would soon be frozen solidly, except for a thin layer of surface melt water during the summerseason Thus, all aquatic life would be destroyed and the interchange of warm and cold currents, whichmoderates climate, would be notably absent

Another outstanding charateristic of water is that water has a heat capacity which is the highest of

all liquids and solids except ammonia This characterisitc enables the oceans to absorb and store vastquantities of heat, thereby often preventing climatic extremes In addition, water dissolves moresubstances than any other liquid It is this characteristic which helps make oceans a great storehouse forminerals which have been washed down from the continents In several areas of the world these mineralsare being commercially exploited Solar evaporation of salt is widely practised, potash is extracted fromthe Dead Sea, and magnesium is produced from sea water along the American Gulf Coast

45: The author’s main purpose in this passage is to _.

A illustrate the importance of conserving water B describe the properties and uses of

water

C compare water with other liquids D explain how water is used in

A 80,000 million cubic miles of water B 24,000 cubic miles of rain

C 80,000 cubic miles of water D 300 million cubic miles of water

47: The word “replenish” in paragraph 1 can best replaced by

48: According to the passage, fish can survive in the oceans because

A evaporation and condensation create a water cycle B there are currents in the oceans

C they do not need oxygen D ice floats

49: Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a characterisitic of water?

A Water can absorb heat B Water is good solvent.

C Water contracts on cooling D Water expands when it is frozen

50: The word “outstanding” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to

A exceptionally good B special C amusing D important

51: According the passage, the hydrosphere is NOT _

A the part of the earth covered by water B responsible for all forms of life

C in danger of freezing over D a source of natural resources

52: The author’s tone in the passage can best be described as

53: The author organizes the passage by _.

A juxtaposition of true and untrue ideas B comparison and contrast

C general statement followed by examples D hypothesis and proof

54: Which of the following statements would be the most likely to begin the paragraph immediately

following the passage?

A Water has the ability to erode land

B Droughts and flooding are two types of disasters associated with water

C Another remarkably property of ice is its strength

D Magnesium is widely used in metallurgical processes

Read the following passage and blacken the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer for each of the questions.

Until recently, most American entrepreneurs were men Discrimination against women in business, the demands of caring for families, and lack of business training had kept the number of womenentrepreneurs small Now, however, businesses owned by women account for more than $40 billion inannual revenues, and this figure is likely to continue rising throughout the 1990s As Carolyn DoppeltGray, an official of the Small Business Administration, has noted, "The 1970s was the decade of womenentering management, and the 1980s turned out to be the decade of the woman entrepreneur" What aresome of the factors behind this trend? In the past, most women entrepreneurs worked in "women's" fields: cosmetics and clothing, forexample But this is changing Consider ASK Computer Systems, a $22-million-a-year computer softwarebusiness It was founded in 1973 by Sandra Kurtzig, who was then a housewife with degrees in math andengineering When Kurtzig founded the business, her first product was software that let weekly

newspapers keep tabs on their newspaper carriers-and her office was a bedroom at home, with a shoebox under the bed to hold the company's cash After she succeeded with the newspaper software system, she

hired several bright computer-science graduates to develop additional programs When these weremarketed and sold, ASK began to grow It now has 200 employees, and Sandra Kurtzig owns $66.9million of stock

Of course, many women who start their own businesses fail, just as men often do They still face

hurdles in the business world, especially problems in raising money; the banking and finance world is still

dominated by men, and old attitudes die hard Most businesses owned by women are still quite small Butthe situation is changing; there are likely to be many more Sandra Kurtzigs in the years ahead

One of the most important ways to help threatened plants and animals survive is to protect their habitats permanently in national parks, nature reserves or wilderness areas There they can live without too much interference from humans It is also important to protect habitats outside reserves such as on farms and along roadsides.

You can visit a nearby national park or nature reserve Some national parks have special guided tours and walks for kids Talk to the rangers to find out whether there are any threatened species and how they are being protected You and your friends might be able to help the rangers in their conservation work.

When you visit a national park, make sure you obey the wildlife code: follow fire regulations; leave your pets at home; leave flowers, birds' eggs, logs, bushes and rocks where you find them; put your rubbish in a bin or, better still, take it home.

If you have friends who live on farms, encourage them to keep patches of bush as wildlife habitats and to leave old trees standing, especially those with hollows suitable for nesting animals

Some areas have groups which look after local lands and nature reserves They do this by removing weeds and planting local native species in their place You could join one of these groups, or even start a new one with your parents and friends Ask your local parks authority or council for information.

By removing rubbish and weeds and replanting with native plants you will allow the native bush to gradually regenerate This will also encourage native animals to return

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the

correct answer to each of the questions

A considerable body of research has demonstrated a correlation between birth order and aspects such as

temperament and behavior, and some psychologists believe that birth order significantly affects the

development of personality Psychologist Alfred Adler was a pioneer in the study of the relationship

between birth order and personality A key point in his research and in the hypothesis that he developed based on it was that it was not the actual numerical birth position that affected personality; instead, it was

the similar responses in large numbers of families to children in specific birth order positions that had an effect For example, first-borns, who have their parents to themselves initially and do not have to deal withsiblings in the first part of their lives, tend to have their first socialization experiences with adults and therefore tend to find the process of peer socialization more difficult In contrast, later-born children have

to deal with siblings from the first moment of their lives and therefore tend to have stronger socialization skills

Numerous studies since Adler’s have been conducted on the effect of birth order and personality These studies have tended to classify birth order types into four different categories: first-born, second-born

and/or middle, last, and only child

Studies have consistently shown that first-born children tend to exhibit similar, positive and negative

personality traits First-borns have consistently been linked with academic achievement in various studies;

in one study, the number of National Merit scholarship winners who are first-borns was found to be equal

to the number of second-and third-borns combined First-borns have been found to be more responsible and assertive than those born in other birth-order positions and tend to rise to positions of leadership more often than others; more first-borns have served in the U.S Congress and as U.S presidents than have those born in other birth-orderpositions However, studies have shown that first-borns tend to be

more subject to stress and were considered problem children more often than later-borns

Second-born and/or middle children demonstrate markedly different tendencies from first-borns They tend to feel inferior to the older child or children because it is difficult for them to comprehend that their lower level of achievement is a function of age rather than ability, and they often try to succeed in areas

other than those in which their older sibling or siblings excel They tend to be more trusting, accepting,

and focused on others than the more self-centered first-borns, and they tend to have a comparatively

higher level of success in team sports than do first-borns or only children, who more often excel in

individual sports

The last-born child is the one who tends to be the eternal baby of the family and thus often exhibits a

strong sense of security Last-borns collectively achieve the highest degree of social success and

demonstrate the highest levels of self-esteem of all the birth-order positions They often exhibit less

competitiveness than older brothers and sisters and are more likely to take part in less competitive group games or in social organizations such as sororities and fraternities

Only children tend to exhibit some of the main characteristics of first-borns and some of the

characteristics of last-borns Only children tend to exhibit the strong sense of security and self-esteem

exhibited by last-borns while, like first-borns, they are more achievement oriented and more likely than

middle-or last-borns to achieve academic success However, only children tend to have the most problems establishing close relationships and exhibit a lower need for affiliation than other children

An important point to remember if you like spending time out in the open air is that the human head

Certainly no creature in the sea is odder than the common sea cucumber All living creature, especially human beings, have their peculiarities, but everything about the little sea cucumber seems unusual What

else can be said about a bizarre animal that, among other eccentricities, eats mud, feeds almost

continuously day and night but can live without eating for long periods, and can be poisonous but is considered supremely edible by gourmets?

For some fifty million years, despite all its eccentricities, the sea cucumber has subsisted on its diet of mud It is adaptable enough to live attached to rocks by its tube feet, under rocks in shallow water, or on the surface of mud flats Common in cool water on both Atlantic and Pacific shores, it has the ability to such up mud or sand and digest whatever nutrients are present

Sea cucumbers come in a variety of colors, ranging from black to reddish-brown to sand-color and nearly white One form even has vivid purple tentacle Usually the creatures are cucumber-shaped-hence their name-and because they are typically rock inhabitants, this shape, combine with flexibility, enables them tosqueeze into crevices where they are safe from predators and ocean currents

Although they have voracious appetites, eating day and night, sea cucumbers have the capacity to become quiescent and live at a low metabolic rate-feeding sparingly or not at all for long periods, so that the

marine organisms that provide their food have a chance to multiply If it were not for this faculty, they

would devour all the food available in a short time and would probably starve themselves out of existence. But the most spectacular thing about the sea cucumber is the way it defends itself Its major enemies are

fish and crabs, when attacked, it squirts all its internal organs into the water It also casts off attached

structures such as tentacles The sea cucumber will eviscerate and regenerate itself if it is attached or even touched; it will do the same if the surrounding water temperature is too high or if the water becomes too polluted
