Trang 4A FOREWORD HEADSTART
With the English language now so firmly established as an international means of communication, it is easy to forget that there are still absolute beginners in the world We wrongly assume that everyone must have some knowledge of the language
One result of this assumption is that many beginners’ course books these days are aimed at false beginners Headstart is designed for absolute beginners, and is a preparatory course for Headway Elementary It is also suitable for students who have learned a little English but who don’t yet feel confident enough to move on They want to go back
before they move forward
Headstart has a clearly defined and limited grammatical syllabus New language is
presented thoroughly in measured amounts and in a logical order Vocabulary has been selected carefully to avoid overloading There are many highly controlled practice activities, which give beginners the confidence they need to proceed There is also some simple skills work, which incorporates manageable communicative activities despite the low level The final section of each unit is Everyday English which deals with common situations, functions, and survival language
Headstart has its origins in a successful bilingual coursebook called Headfirst, which was designed for German learners of English, and written by Briony Beaven, a very experienced EFL teacher and teacher trainer Sylvia Wheeldon, of Oxford University Press and editor of Headway Elementary, has very skilfully adapted Headfirst for an international market She has reshaped a lot of the material, and has contributed new exercises and activities to suit a monolingual edition There is also a much-needed Workbook The result is a unique package at this much-neglected level
We personally feel that Headstart breaks new ground by confronting realistically and honestly the problems that beginners face, whilst at the same time drawing judiciously on current methodologies and approaches
fs 7 ES
Trang 5OVERVIEW Headstart contains 12 units, structured as follows: PRESENTATION
New language points and vocabulary are presented in context through texts which students can read and hear at
the same time to highlight form, use and pronunciation
PRACTICE
The Practice section contains a variety of exercise types
which offer controlled and freer activities, often involving all four skills
SKILLS WORK
Listening:
There are regular unseen listening sections in dialogue or monologue form They give further practice of the language of the unit, and later help develop students’ ability to understand the main message of a listening text
Reading:
Regular graded reading passages also provide practice in the target language of the unit in a wider context, as well as developing students’ reading comprehension abilities
Speaking and Pronunciation:
There are a variety of speaking activities In the Presentation sections students have the opportunity to practise the pronunciation and intonation of new language In the Practice sections, more controlled tasks lead to freer speaking activities, e.g information gaps and questionnaires There are also simple pronunciation sections throughout the book to highlight word stress
patterns
VOCABULARY
Vocabulary is carefully graded and recycled so that the is no overloading A lexical set is usually introduced ar practised in each unit and there are regular revision sections There is a word list for each unit at the back c the book and students are encouraged to translate and learn the words
EVERYDAY ENGLISH
This section introduces simple functional language in useful situations for the students to listen to and practi and survival English such as spelling, numbers, times, and days
GRAMMAR SUMMARY
The grammar of the unit is presented in tabular form ¢ the end of each unit, along with an exercise for studen to check their understanding Prepositions and functic phrases are also listed
