knowledge about how the proper statistical procedures should be used and even less about how they should be interpreted In many marketing research reports, the necessary statistical reporting is often lacking Statistics are often left out of the reports so as to avoid scaring off the user Of course this means that the user is no longer capable of judging whether or not the right procedures have been used and whether or not the procedures have been used properly This book has been written for different target audiences First of all, it is suitable for all marketing researchers who would like to use these statistical procedures in practice It is also useful for those commissioning and using marketing research It allows the procedures used to be followed, understood and most importantly, interpreted In addition, this book can prove beneficial for students in an undergraduate or postgraduate educational programme in marketing, sociology, communication sciences and psychology, as a supplement to courses such as marketing research and research methods Finally, it is useful for anyone who would like to process completed surveys or questionnaires statistically This book picks up where the traditional marketing research handbooks leave off Its primary goal is to encourage the use of statistical procedures in marketing research On the basis of a concrete marketing research problem, the book teaches you step by step which statistical procedure to use, identifies the options available, and most importantly, teaches you how to interpret the results In doing so, the book goes far beyond what the minimum standard options available in the software packages have to offer It opts for the processing of data using the SPSS package At present, SPSS is one of the most frequently used statistical packages in the marketing research world It is also available at most universities and colleges of higher education Additionally, it uses a simple menu system (programming is not necessary) and is thus very easy to learn how to use The book is based on version 15 of this software package Information is drawn from concrete datasets which may be found on the website (www pearsoned.co.uk/depelsmacker) The reader simply has to open the dataset in SPSS (not included) and may then – with the book opened to the appropriate page – practice the techniques, step by step Most of the datasets originate from actual marketing research projects Each of the datasets was compiled during the course of interviews performed on consumers or students, and were then input into SPSS The website also contains a number of syntaxes (procedures in program form) This book is not however a basic manual for SPSS The topic is marketing research with the aid of SPSS This means that a basic knowledge of SPSS is assumed For the inexperienced reader, the first chapter contains a short introduction to SPSS This book is also not a basic manual for marketing research or statistics The reader should not expect an elaborate theoretical explanation on marketing research and/or statistical procedures The reader will find this type of information in the relevant literature which is referred to in each chapter The technique used is described briefly and explained at the beginning of every chapter under the heading ‘Technique.’ The book’s primary purpose is to demonstrate the practical implementation of statistics in marketing research, which does more than simply display SPSS input screens and SPSS outputs to show how the analysis should proceed, but also provides an In this screen (Figure 4.5), the researcher must indicate which extra tests he would like to perform in order to find out which levels (different promotions) are the ones that are responsible for any factor effect (the act of running the promotion) In other words, these extra tests are necessary if one would like to know for which promotions the average sales differ significantly from one another Because it is not yet known whether there are equal variances between the different groups or not, a test has been selected for ‘Equal Variances Assumed’ as well as ‘Equal Variances Not Assumed’ In Figure 4.5, ‘Tukey’ and ‘Dunnett’s C’ have been chosen, respectively The other tests each have their own characteristics, but are, in general, of equal merit Click on ‘Continue’ and then on ‘OK’ in EXAMPLE 2: ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE WITH A COVARIATE (ANCOVA) When the two-by-two tests are examined in combination with the mean scores, we notice that it is in fact the tasting that causes the significant differences The null hypothesis is still that there is no significant difference between both groups When the significance level is less than 05, this null hypothesis may be rejected and we may decide that the means for both groups differ significantly from each other Therefore, the average sales in the stores in which a tasting was held differed significantly from the mean sales in the other two groups of stores This may be seen from the significance level which may be found in the ‘Sig.’ column The difference between ‘tasting’ on the one hand, and ‘display’ and ‘decoration’ on the other is significant (Ͻ 001 and 001, respectively, both Ͻ 05) This significant difference is also indicated by a ‘*’ in the ‘Mean Difference (I-J)’ column) Because each case involves two-by-two comparisons, each relationship may be found twice in Figure 4.9 With the exception of the sign of the difference and the direction of the confidence intervals, the comparison between ‘tasting’ and ‘display’ is obviously the same as the comparison between ‘display’ and ‘tasting’ Example Analysis of variance with a covariate (ANCOVA) Technique: supplement Determining whether or not the effect of a certain factor on a variable to be explained is significant is actually a matter of studying the variance explained by the factor, as opposed to the unexplained variance If this ratio is large enough, this indicates that it is meaningful to include this factor in the analysis However, when it may be assumed that there are other variables which have a linear relationship to the variable to be explained, it is recommended that this is included in the relevant analysis of variance Suppose that we take the intention to buy a durable product as the dependent variable, then we may expect that income has a positive influence on this dependent variable Under these circumstances, it is recommended that this interval-scaled variable is included in the analysis of variance as a covariate A portion of the variance of the dependent variable is then explained by the covariate An extra assumption (in addition to the minimum requirement that the dependent variable is interval-scaled, a normal distribution of the error term, homogeneity of the variances and independence of the observations) which must be checked using ANCOVA as compared with ANOVA, is the homogeneity of the regression slopes across the various experimental groups What is important here are the regressions (relationships) between the dependent variable on the one hand, and the covariate on the other hand for each experimental group This will be discussed in the example below both graphically as well as formally 77 MARR_C04.QXD 2/20/08 2:57 PM Page 78 www.downloadslide.com 78 CHAPTER / ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE Managerial problem Suppose that the manager of an electronics store chain would like to find out whether or not spraying a perfume (lavender oil) in the retail stores will result in higher sales To this, he selects 30 different stores which are similar in nature In 10 of the stores, no perfume is sprayed, and this group of stores also serves as the benchmark for the study In 10 other stores, he only sprays a very limited quantity of lavender oil In the remaining stores, he allows a substantial quantity to be sprayed With regard to the stores where the lavender oil is sprayed, previous research had already shown that the limited spraying usually led to a subconscious fragrance perception, while for the stores where a significant quantity was sprayed, this usually led to a conscious perception of a fragrance; in other words, people who entered the store immediately noticed the lavender fragrance As is the case with ANOVA, this study must also involve comparable stores, so that no ‘hidden factor’ is included in the analysis One factor which the researcher cannot get around is that the stores have different surface areas and that previous research had already proven that larger stores can lead to more sales In order to free the experiment with the fragrances from any potentially biasing effect of store size, this last aspect is included as a covariate in the gathering and analysis of data (here the covariate is actually used more as a control variable) Unlike the first section of this chapter (relating to ANOVA) in which there had been no a priori expectations of the direction of the differences between the levels of the factor, the researcher does have these in part now The researcher’s expectation here is that the benchmark group will experience the poorest sales (due to the lack of pleasant lavender fragrance) in comparison with the stores in which a lavender fragrance is in fact used What the researcher has not yet figured out himself however (where he has no a priori expectation) is the question of whether or not the group in which a high dose of lavender fragrance is used will perform better than the group in which a lower dose of lavender fragrance is used After all, the strong presence of fragrance can put the customers in a better frame of mind, however it can also create a negative effect because a number of customers might experience this as inappropriate and/or bring about a feeling of being manipulated Whether or not there are a priori expectations is important to the selection of the sort of testing system that will be used to determine the differences between the groups If there are a priori expectations, the choice will be made for contrasts, and in the case of no a priori expectations, post-hoc tests will be chosen The difference between these two situations lies in the fact that posthoc tests are more conservative (stricter) To a certain extent, this may be compared with one-sided and two-sided hypothesis tests, in which one-sided tests are less stringent and two-sided tests are more conservative Problem Perform an ANCOVA and find out if the use of a low, high or no dose of lavender fragrance has an effect on sales Next, using contrasts, find out whether low and high doses lead to better sales when compared with a situation in which no lavender fragrance is used Finally, using post-hoc tests, find out whether there is a difference in sales between the low and high dose groups While you are doing this, keep in mind the possibility of a linear influence of store surface area on the sales The data are in the file fragrance.sav, an illustration of which may be found in Figure 4.10 ‘Sales’ are the sales on a weekly basis, ‘fragrance’ indicates the experimental group to which the store belongs (0 ϭ no lavender fragrance, ϭ low dose of lavender fragrance, ϭ high dose of lavender fragrance) ‘Size’ is the store surface area expressed in m2 MARR_C04.QXD 2/20/08 2:57 PM VARIANCE WITH A COVARIATE (ANCOVA) As seen in Figure 4.13, move the ‘fragranc’ variable from the ‘Factor(s) and Factor Interactions’ window to the ‘Display Means for’ window by clicking Now tick the box for the option ‘Compare main effects’ Under ‘Confidence interval adjustment’ select ‘Bonferroni’ instead of the default option ‘(LSD) none’ This way, the post hoc tests will still be performed In the lower half of this same ‘Options’ window, under ‘Display’, indicate the options ‘Descriptive statistics’, ‘Estimates of effect size’ (to get an idea of the strength of the relationships found) and ‘Homogeneity tests’ (to test the assumption of the equality of group variances) Next, click on ‘Continue’ and on ‘Contrasts’ in the ‘Univariate’ window You will now see the image such as the one shown in Figure 4.14a Click on the drop down symbol in the ‘Change Contrast’ section and change the option from ‘None’ to ‘Simple’ Under ‘Reference Category’ change the option ‘Last’ to ‘First’ (no lavender fragrance is coded with ‘0’ and the other two levels have the higher coding ‘1’ and ‘2’, therefore no lavender fragrance is the reference category) In this way, SPSS will test group (low dose) and group (high dose) against the first group (no lavender fragrance) Now click on ‘Change’, so that the changes also become visible in the ‘Factors’ window, as shown in Figure 4.14b Figure 4.14a Figure (ANCOVA) As shown in Figure 4.17, the null hypothesis of equal variances may not be rejected (p ϭ 309 Ͼ 05), meaning that this assumption is satisfied If this assumption had not been satisfied, the researcher could consider remedying interventions such as a transformation of the dependent variable (this is certainly the case when the inequality of the error terms is coupled with a non-normal distribution of the residuals) or the researcher may consider a non-parametric analysis of variance, such as Friedman’s non-parametric ANOVA Please refer to the specialised literature for further information in this regard Furthermore it is also assumed that the residuals are distributed normally To determine this, a normality test must be performed on the unstandardized residuals, a new variable which was created via Figure 4.16 (This test may also be done on the standardized residuals The result is the same) The normality of the residuals may then be tested here via Analyze/Descriptives/Explore, in which the option ‘Normality plots with tests’ is ticked under ‘Plots’ (see also Chapter 2, Frequency tables and graphs) An output like the one shown in Figure 4.18
