You must choose the one which you think fits best. Give one answer only to each question. (10 marks) WHICH CAREER? 1. MEDICINE A medical career means years of studying and dedication and although it is a prestigious career, doctors must be prepared to sacrifice some of their private life. To become a doctor you need to spend years at university before working in a hospital. During the first few years of a medical career a doctor has to be on call day and night. Then, depending on the area of specialization, for example they could choose to become a surgeon, a doctor may start to make a lot of money. This ability to make money and the fact that doctors have a high standing in society explains why many parents want their children to become doctors. 2. TEACHING You will never become rich if you choose to enter the teaching profession, but teaching can be a very rewarding career and of course there are the long vacations. You should be prepared to work with children who may not be interested in school, as well as those who want to study. Becoming a teacher is more than just getting a teaching qualification at university, it requires a certain talent to get your ideas across to young people whilst making it enjoyable. This is probably the teacher’s hardest task, making lessons fun, but still making sure students are learning. 3. PLUMBING Although it is a very important job, many young people do not think of plumbing as a possible career choice. Yet society always needs plumbers and there is often a shorteage of good, qualified people around which means they can change high prices for their services. Not only can plumbers earn good money, they are also guaranteed constant work and they can choose to work the hours that suit them. In fact being a skilled worker is very advantageous in today’s society. Young people should accept that a university education does not always guarantee a reasonable income, being a good plumber does. 4. AVIATION Though it is consisdered a glamorous, high-paying job, being a pilot is very demanding work. First the training is very extensive and pilots must have passed a medical before they can even start to learn. Pilots who want to get a commercial license need to spend hundreds of hours flying and pass an exam. It is a very responsible job as the lives of hundreds of people may depend on the pilot’s ability to think and act quickly under pressure. Also, a pilot has to spend a lot of time traveling away from home and family, which may account for the fact that there are so few women commercial pilots. It is an ideal job for a person who wants stable family life. 5. THE ARMY Once the army was strictly a man’s world which women could not enter. But times have changed and many women see army life as a challenging and interesting career. Recruiting centers advertise the army as a place where soldiers can learn a valuable trade, such as engineering or computing, which will be useful if SỞ GD &ĐT HƯNG YÊN KỲ THI CHỌN ĐỘI TUYỂN HỌC SINH GIỎI TRƯỜNG THPT TRIỆU QUANG PHỤC NĂM HỌC 2017 - 2018 Môn thi: TIẾNGANH LỚP 11 THPT Thời gian làm bài: 150 phút Họ tên: SBD: SECTION A: VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR I Choose the word or phrase which best completes each sentence Write your answer in the numbered box provided below Whatever your ambition is, as long as you try your utmost, you will be able to achieve your A potential B objective C outcome D motivation It is impossible to tell these twins apart A extremely B virtually C basically D naturally As we were waiting on the pavement, a black Mercedes beside us A pulled up B pulled down C pulled off D pulled through she’s got a job that she likes, she’s a lot happier A Since when B Just as C Now that D Just now Sorry, but that book is We’ll get some copies from the publisher next Monday A out of print B out of order C off shelf D out of stock amount of money can buy true friendship A None B Never C No D Not only The garden as far as the river A advances B lies C enlarges D extends You can't get through on the phone because the number you want is A engaged B occupied C in use D busy you were shocked is perhaps not surprising A What B That C Which D How 10 I don’t see any in arriving early at the theatre if the show doesn’t start until o’clock A cause B aim C reason D point 11 We should arrive home safe and A sound B soundly C warm D warmly 12 The idea got a lot of from the children’s parents A opposition B disagreement C dislike D denial 13 The picnic to be a terrible disaster A turned out B turned up C turned down D turned round 14 This national park an area of 2,000 square kilometers A covers B surrounds C consists D spreads 15 Those gloves are much too small for you Don’t try to put them on or you will _them A extend B spread C stretch D swell 16 This is the most difficult job I’ve ever had to A by far B by chance C by heart D by myself 17 The teacher suspected the student cheating in examination A on B about C in D of 18 I am so tired that I can’t take _what you are saying A up B out C in D on 19 There is a fault at our television station Please don’t your set A change B adjust C repair D switch 20 A trade union membership has declined, the number of _and strikes has also decreased A quarrels B arguments C disagreements D disputes Your Answer: 11 16 12 17 13 18 14 19 10 15 20 II Use the word given in capitals to form a word that fits in the space Write your answer in the numbered box provided below Volunteering has many other intangible benefits It can help you give back to society, break down barriers of _ (1 UNDERSTAND) or fear, explore _ (2 PERSON) issues and even have fun It also has a _ (3 MEAN) and positive impact on your community But did you know that it can have many benefits for you, too?
