More and more legal documents are being translated into English, the international language of communication, for reference purposes. This calls for studies into the field of legal translation to come up with methods and strategies of translation, as well as assessment and evaluation of translations. This study aims at revealing the most basic features of Vietnamese and English legal language, and basic concepts of translation theory in general, legal translation in particular. Then it will test the appropriateness of House’s model for translation quality assessment in assessing English translations of Vietnamese legal documents. This is done through the application of the model in assessing the English version of the Law on Investment 2005 of Vietnam and conclusions based on the findings. Finally, implications for translating Vietnamese legal documents into Annex 1e Reference code Date of submission (to be filled by NAFOSTED) APPLICATION FOR BASIC RESEARCH PROJECT A General project information: Project name in Vietnamese Project name in English Scientific field Discipline/s (specific scientific discipline) Discipline’s classification code (Please refer to the official classification of research fields and disciplines) New proposal Follow-on proposal Interdiscipline Project duration (months) Number of project members Total budget required (mil vnd) Requested funding (mil vnđ) Name of other funding institution/s this proposal has been submitted to (if any) B Principal Investigator (PI) and Research hosting institution: Project leader’s name (PI) Birth date Academic degree Sex M F Administrative position Research hosting institution Department/ Division/ Faculty Office Tel Mobile phone No Fax No E-mail Cooperating institutions/s The main applicant confirms hereby the veracity of all the details and information given in this proposal including the attachments They were prepared with the agreement of all the persons involved (Place), Date Research hosting institution Principal Investigator PART 1: INTRODUCTION 1. Rationale Information Technology (IT) is a major force that has brought about revolutionary changes in the development of the global, digital society. Education is considered the foundation for development and the concept of IT use in education as powerful tools is strongly encouraged in Vietnam. The powerful tools which can help teachers to expand the four walls of the traditional classroom and rebuild the class without the walls are increasing in both quantity and quality with the advent of the technology era in the country. Regarding Second Language Teaching, IT has been considered as a tremendous potential tool. IT tools are various from using some popular software in teaching like Power point, Word Processor, Window media to others which are more complex like using Internet, WWW, Webquest, Weblog… to improve the language skills. Many articles have discussed the effectiveness of IT tools in SLT in the world. However, the application of IT tools in ESL in Vietnam was set forth by Nguyen Lan Trung and Ngo Van Nghiem (1997) who suggested the use of CD-ROM. The recent focus on technology in language study has been on the use of Power point, email and Internet (Nguyen Thu Hoai, 2005; Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, 2004; Pham Thi Ngoc Phuong,2006). The latest focused on the Webquest and Weblog effectiveness in ESP course. In spite of the claimed advantages of these researches, there is a limited number of studies on the developing the Vocabulary Acquisition in ESP course. These above-mentioned concerns urged the author to carry out the research, called: “A study on the effectiveness of applying IT tools in teaching Vocabulary in English for IT for the second year students at Vietnam – Korea Industrial Technology College (VKITC)” 2. Aims of the Study This study aims to measure the effectiveness of utilization of the class website in teaching English for IT vocabulary for the second year students at VKITC. Hence, it is expected to achieve the two following objectives: 1 - First, to investigate the influence of utilizing class website on the vocabulary outcomes of the second year students in English for IT Course at Vietnam Korea College. - Second, to investigate the learners’ opinions and attitudes towards the application of class website in ESP vocabulary teaching. - Third, to find out the difficulties students meet during the course. 3. Research Questions In order to achieve the aims of the study, the following research questions were raised: 1. To what extent does the employment of class website have influence on the effectiveness of teaching IT vocabulary for the 2 nd year students in IT Faculty at VKITC? 2. What are the students’ opinions and attitudes towards the utilization of the class website in their IT vocabulary learning? 3. What difficulties do students meet during the employment of the class website to improve their vocabulary acquisition? 4. Scope of the Study The present study operates within the following scope: (i) VIETNAM NATIONAL UNIVERSITY - HANOI COLLEGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES POST-GRADUATE DEPARTMENT DƯƠNG THỊ HỒNG AN AN EVALUATION AND APPLICATION OF SOME MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION SOFTWARE IN DESIGNING ENGLISH LECTURES AT FIT - TNU ( Đánh giá và ứng dụng một số phần mềm trình chiếu đa phương tiện trong thiết kế bài giảng môn tiếng Anh tại Khoa Công nghệ thông tin - Đại học Thái Nguyên) MINOR PROGRAMME THESIS ENGLISH TEACHING METHODOLOGY CODE: 60.14.10 HANOI - 2009 VIETNAM NATIONAL UNIVERSITY - HANOI COLLEGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES POST-GRADUATE DEPARTMENT DƯƠNG THỊ HỒNG AN AN EVALUATION AND APPLICATION OF SOME MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION SOFTWARE IN DESIGNING ENGLISH LECTURES AT FIT - TNU ( Đánh giá và ứng dụng một số phần mềm trình chiếu đa phương tiện trong thiết kế bài giảng môn tiếng Anh tại Khoa Công nghệ thông tin - Đại học Thái Nguyên) MINOR PROGRAMME THESIS ENGLISH TEACHING METHODOLOGY CODE: 60.14.10 Supervisor : DO TUAN MINH, PhD HANOI - 2009 1 MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING UNIVERSITY OF DANANG NGUYỄN THỊ THANH HƯƠNG A STUDY OF THE VIETNAMESE TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH NON – FINITE CLAUSES AND ITS APPLICATION IN VIETNAMESE ENGLISH TRANSLATION FIELD: THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CODE: 60.22.15 M.A. THESIS ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (A Summary) Danang - 2011 2 The thesis has been completed at the College of Foreign Languages, University of Danang. The appearance and the meaning of non – finite clauses are very abundant and diverse. Obviously, it is really difficult for the learners to use exactly. Besides, many noticeable problems appear in translating non – finite clauses. Many students use non – finite clauses but they do not pay attention to meanings of non – finite clauses in translating. For instance, to translate the English sentence “It was useless for me to travel alone” into Vietnamese, many students translated it as follow: “Không có ích lợi gì cho tôi ñể ñi một mình”. Actually, we only need to say: “Tôi ñi một mình thì có ích gì”. Because of the practical issues of non – finite clauses in translation, we would like to choose this topic for our study: “A Study of the Vietnamese Translation of English Non – finite Clauses and Its Application in Vietnamese English Translation” 1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 1.2.1 Aims The study aims at presenting the usage of non – finite clauses and helping Vietnamese learners of English identify as well as understand English non – finite clauses. In addition, we hope to provide students with knowledge of the translation of English non – finite clauses. 1.2.2 Objectives - Describe the translation of English non – finite clauses into Vietnamese. 4 - Improve translating skills. - Suggest some impications in Vietnamese English translation of English non – finite clauses. 1.3 THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY Because of the limitation of time and the ability of our own, in the thesis we would like to focus on translating English non – finite clauses. We will investigate English non – finite clauses and their Vietnamese translational equivalents with the hope of finding the ways of translating English non – finite clauses. Then we provide some implications in Vietnamese English translation. In this thesis, 227 samples sentences with non – finite clauses are taken from bilingual non – literary and literary works for analysis. 1.4 THE RESEARCH QUESTIONS i MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING VINH UNIVERSITY NguyÔn thÞ lan h¬ng An application of CLT principles in teaching speaking to non-English majors at Nghe An Economics and Technology College.
