The Direct Method Objectives of the teachers Ss should learn:  how to communicate in the target language (L2)  how to think in L2 Teacher’s & Learners’ roles  Teacher’s role: - Directing all of the class activities - Being a partner of the learners  Learners’ role: - Active participants The role of L1 & Interactions   The role of L1: not permitted Interactions - The teacher  Students - Students The teacher - Students Students How vocabulary is taught Meaning of vocabulary is demonstrated through the use of:  Realia  Pantomime (= mime)  Pictures  Examples  Sentence samples  Direct relation b/w form & meaning How grammar is taught    Inductively (examples & drills) Ss are expected to discover & acquire the rules Drills like chain drills, yes/no question, question drills help Ss induce the rules 6 Language skills/areas   Skills: reading, writing, speaking & listening from the start as oral communication is seen as a basic Reading/Writing based upon what Ss practice orally first Areas: pronunciation receives attention from the beginning of the course Vocabulary is emphasized over grammar 7 Materials & Syllabus  Materials: - Reading passages (for topics) - Dialogues & plays (for situations)  Syllabus: - Situational - Topical Teaching Techniques        Reading aloud Question-answer exercise Ss’ self-correction Conversation practice Fill-in-the-blank exercise Dictation & drawing (for listening practice) Paragraph writing How language & culture are viewed?  Language: primarily spoken, not written everyday speech in L2  Culture: the history of the people speaking L2, the geography of the country where L2 is spoken & information about the daily life of the speakers of L2 10 How Ss’ errors are treated?  Various techniques employed by the teacher  Getting Ss to self-correct wherever possible QUESTIONS TO DISCUSS Explain the difference between deductive and inductive treatments of grammar What are some of the characteristics of the Direct Method that make it so distinctive from the Grammar-Translation Method?
