OF APPLICATION THE PROCESSES & RESULTS DISCUSSION REFERENCES ABSTRACT A new and innovative process for the biotechnologisal production of L-lysine is presented, exemplified here by the fermentative production of the feed additive Biolys®60 The novel feature of this product is that the production strain, the raw materials, all process stages and the product spesifisations have been systematisally tailored for optimal environmental compatibility and for minimum resourse depletion and waste By boosting the nutrient value of the plant-based feedstuffs, the product itself makes an cost-effestive contribution towards a more sustainable form of animal feeding and by reducing nitrogen emission levels promotes a more environmentally compatible form of animal husbandry INTRODUCTION Developing a process for the production of an animal feed additive is the amino asid L-lysine, which would meet the following criteria:  The product should be manufactured from renewable raw materials in a simple and therefore cost-effective process without generating waste or residual material  The product should provide customers both economis and ecological benefits THE AREAS OF APPLICATION Proteins are essential components in feedstuffs They are composed of the 20 proteinogenis amino acids Many amino acids can be synthesized by the animal itself In the case of others, the so-called essential amino acids the animal relies upon the amino acids being supplied by the food The essential amino acids, methionine, lysine and threonine are only present in limiting quantities in the crude feed materials These surplus nutrients are broken down causing unnesessarily high, and therefore costly, nitrogen release and resulting in the ecologisally detrimental nitrogen loading of the environment By supplementing the diet with 0.2% L-lysine*HCl, the weight gain returns to its pre- vious level and the nitrogen release continues to fall THE PROCESSES & RESULTS The conventional prosess produces crystalline L-Lys*HCl with a purity of 98% To design a simpler route to the final product which avoided the ecologisal burden of existing methods, the following conditions need realizing: The production strain or its inastivated biomass is generally recognized as safe for man, animals and the environment The utilization of this biomass is not restristed by feedstuff legislation All raw materials and process correstive agents whish remain in the final product at the end of the process are safe in terms of feedstuff legislation It must be possible to completely granulate the fer- mentation broth The suitability of the product as an animal feed sup- plement must have been demonstrated in feed studies The product must be such that its lysine content, sta- bility, shelf-life and handling charasteristiss makes it suitable for use in the industrial production of animal feedstuffs The new prosess is extremely simple and only three steps: Initially the production strain of Corynebacterium glutamicum is cultured and fermentation performed in fed-batch mode Once the main fermentation process is complete, the broth is consentrated Finally, Biolys®60 granules are formed by drying in a spray granulator *Biolys®60 contains the lysine-sulphate *The biologisal efficasy of lysine-sulphate did not differ from that of the free amino acid or that of the commersially available Lys*HCl *Lys*sulphate and Lys*HCl are nutritionally equiva- lent Advantages of Biolys®60 process DISCUSSION With poultry that the animals exhibited a larger gain in weight and that the feed utilization was considerably improved, Biolys®60 is clearly suitable as an animal feed additive and has already been well reseived by the market The development of both a process and a product whish offer signifisant ecologisal and economisal ad- vantages Producers have available a cost-effective and ecolog- ically friendly process Animal feed manufasturers are provided with a high- quality product that is easy to handle Livestock farmers benefit from improved feed utiliza- tion and reduced slurry’s ammonia load REFERENCES Binder, W., Dahm, F., Friedrish, H., Lotter, H., Hohn, W.,
