Standards are referred to in this Standard AS 1221 Firehosereels 1319 Safety signs for the occupational environment 1851 Maintenance offire protection equipment Part 2: Firehosereels (AS 1851.2) 2941 Fixed fire protection installations—Pumpset systems DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions below apply 3.1 Approved—approved by the Regulatory Authority 3.2 Regulatory Authority—a Minister of the Crown, a government department or other public authority having power to issue regulations, orders, or other instructions in respect of any subject covered by this Standard NOTE: Where adoption of this Standard is not a requirement of a Regulatory Authority but is a requirement of a body such as a relevant insurance company or association, then that body or their nominees such as the Insurance Council of Australia may perform the functions of the Regulatory Authority for the purposes of this Standard 9.1 General Each hose reel shall be located in a readily accessible position and its location shall be clearly indicated Firehosereels shall not be located in fire-isolated exits unless approval is obtained from the Regulatory Authority Where a firehose reel is installed in an external situation or an aggressive environment, it shall be protected by a cabinet or other suitable means 9.2 Indication of location 9.2.1 Cabinets Where the firehose reel is mounted in a cabinet, the door of the cabinet shall have the words ‘FIRE HOSE REEL’ in white lettering not less than 50 mm high on a contrasting background 9.2.2 Obscured locations Where a firehose reel is obscured by storage racks or other obstructions, its location shall be indicated by a sign with the words, FIREHOSE REEL, not less than 50 mm high on a contrasting background The sign shall comply with AS 1319 and shall be readily visible to occupants in the protected area 10 MOUNTING The hose reel mounting shall comply with the following requirements: (a) The hose reel assembly shall be mounted so that the full diameter of the drum is facing the access point (b) The hose reel assembly shall be suitably mounted at a spindle height of between 1.5 m and 2.4 m above floor level The valve shall be mounted at ±0.1 m above floor level See Figure 10.1 NOTE: The recommended mounting height of the centre of the hose reel is 1.5 m above floor level FIREHOSE REEL ASSEMBLIES Firehose reel assemblies shall comply with AS 1221 WATER SUPPLY The supply of water to the hose reel assembly shall be sufficient to enable the hose to deliver a minimum of 0.33 L/s NOTE: Where the water supply does not comply with this requirement, the installationoffirehosereels is not recommended DISCONNECTING DEVICE Where automatic firehosereels are installed, the disconnecting device shall be installed in an accessible position on the supply side of the automatic valve assembly Hose reel assemblies other than automatic types shall have the 25 mm disconnecting device installed on the outlet side of the valve ISOLATION VALVES Numbers, types and locations of isolating valves shall be approved by the Regulatory Authority FIREHOSE REEL PUMP Where a firehose reel pump is installed, it shall comply with AS 2941 LOCATION (c) The stop valve assembly and instructions shall be visible and readily accessible when the hose reel is installed, and shall be not more than m from the spindle of the hose reel assembly A clearance of not less than 100 mm shall be provided around the valve handwheel (d) Wherever the hose reel is mounted, there shall be a minimum radial clearance of 100 mm between the reel rim and any obstructions which no form part of the hose assembly (e) The hose reel shall be mounted and installed so that there is no interference with the running out of the hose in any direction (f) The nozzle shall be capable of being raised to a vertical position with the nozzle outlet pointing downwards in the interlock while the stop valve is closed (g) Where the hose guide is fitted to the hose reel supply pipe, it shall be located in a manner that will prohibit the guide moving vertically (h) Where a hose reel is fixed in a cabinet or recess, the hose guide shall protrude reel is mounted in a cabinet, the door of the cabinet shall be fitted so that, when open, it does not encroach on exit ways or obstruct access to other firefighting equipment A cabinet door(s) shall be openable by single handed operation of the latching mechanism (k) The hose reel and its mounting shall be firmly secured to the mounting surface in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions (l) The structure on which the hose reel is mounted shall be capable of supporting the mass of the charged hose reel assembly and withstanding the forces which may be applied when the hose reel is used 11 COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE After installationof the assembly, the following points shall be checked: (a) That leakage of water does not exceed mL in from the valve gland or discharge nozzle assembly with the hose pressurized and the nozzle closed (b) That the hose can be withdrawn easily in any direction, i.e the hose shall be capable of being unwound when subject to an initial horizontal pull not exceeding 100 N (see ‘reel unwind test’ in AS 1221) (c) That the flow rate with the nozzle in the jet mode is operational by discharging water into a container The rate of flow shall be not less than 0.33 L/s (d) That defects found shall be corrected (e) That the hose is rewound in even layers, the nozzle re-engaged correctly in the interlock, the valve is shut off (f) That
