We’re thrilled to be the silver award recipient in the Best Redesign, B-to-B category of the Ozzie Awards The Ozzies are the magazine industry’s largest and most prestigious contest celebrating the best in editorial and design excellence across all sectors and they have selected HA+D as one of the top re-designed magazines of 2011 E D I T O R’S NOTE a new era in design David Eisen Managing Editor I’M AMBIVALENT when it comes to the word “trend.” There’s a tendency in hospitality design circles to throw the term around—hey, I’ve been guilty of it—as a measure for where the industry is and where it is going Of course, trends are ephemeral and, moreover, what’s trendy to one person might be ghastly to another However, for lack of a better word, it fits and helps propel the discussion of design as it relates to hospitality In our featured story this issue, top design visionaries in the industry gave us their perspective on design direction, particularly as it relates to hotels There’s no doubt that the way guests use technology has affected the direction of interior design—in both guestrooms and public spaces Diehards of desks may be sad to know of their gradual demise Hey, I didn’t say it—Glenn Pushelberg did! His collaborator George Yabu talks about the communal movement of hotels, wherein guests—who knew?—enjoy the company of strangers, or at least the feeling that they aren’t alone It’s made hotel lobbies focal points and led to innovation in food-and-beverage outlets But best of all, hotels are well past the days of dull and insipid Owners and operators are taking their cues from top designers, giving them the freedom to turn their passion and ideas into reality I think Callin Fortis of BigTime Design Studios said it most eloquently when he declared, “After a decade of seemingly endless design copycats, we as an industry have turned the corner, reinvigorating a creative and unique sensibility.” These are exciting times! It’s also an exciting time for HA+D We recently passed out honors at our second annual HA+D Awards for innovation, excellence and sustainability in product and project designs The wonderful evening was held at the Langham Place Hotel Hong Kong and attended by more than 150 design industry professionals Check out page 48 for a pictorial spread of the night, and for a complete listing of winners, go to: www.hotelmanagement.net/2011awards Another thing we are excited about at HA+D is technology — ours We recognize that people today—particularly hotel owners, operators and designers—are constantly on the move and need their technology to be mobile Keeping that in mind, we recently launched our own app (that’s the icon for it, below), available for iOS and Android phones and tablets You can peruse past issues and even download copies of the magazine It’s inspiration on the go! Nanjing ▼ Interior design firm Bilkey Llinas Design completed the interior design and fit-out of the Westin Nanjing, China The property has become the latest addition in the 30-year portfolio for this design team in China BLD worked with the operator Starwood In the case of the lobby, keeping a light and airy feel was challenging because there were no windows at that end of the building The lobby is on the 23rd floor and features two distinct areas, the reception and the all-day-dining restaurant Seasonal Tastes The lack of natural light for the lobby was compensated by the decorative use of lighting, as well as the choice of materials including the use of light travertine marble to bring out the lightness and also using darker tones and spot lighting to draw attention to certain features, such as the reception area Guestroom sizes range from 452 square feet to 1,808 square feet, consisting of deluxe, executive club, executive suites, one-bedroom suites and a 4,069-square-foot presidential suite on the 35th floor The geometry of the building influenced the layout of the rooms, particularly the zigzag angles of some of the guestroom windows that allowed views into the neighboring rooms BLD tackled this potential issue by placing the mini bar in a freestanding pedestal that blocked most of the invasive view into the other rooms acting as a visual barrier Custom carpeting in the main bedrooms consists of a light palette of colors with light-colored marble flooring in the vestibule and bathrooms In contrast to the rest of the property, BLD designed the spa to have more organic and curvilinear elements Features include the use of natural stone and wood combined with light features and the use of natural light from the windows H A+D MAY 2012 VOLUM e I ssUe located on the 41st floor, offering views of the city and the countryside Artistic concepts are seen in both ceiling structures and in the design of custom lighting fixtures and furniture For the all-day dining restaurant, Gettys incorporated the local design aesthetic with the use of bojagi, a patchwork of fabrics traditionally used to wrap food These patterns and commonly found colors were also incorporated into the interior architecture and FF&E components Of the 269 rooms, no two guestrooms on any floor are alike due to the shape of the building In a nod to traditional Korean homes, many rooms have an indoor and outdoor space Gettys also created rooms exclusively for female guests called ‘Her Rooms.’ Meeting facilities include a grand ballroom and pre-function area, with t wo
