Accelerated Learning-Moving AheadCCBCDevelopmentalMathtoCollegeAlgebra Kate Abromaitis and Kathy Baranoski Community College of Baltimore County June 17, 2016 Integrated Math Courses Math 081- Pre-Algebra ◦ Lowest Level DevelopmentalMath Course ◦ No credit course Math 082- Introductory Algebra ◦ DevelopmentalMath Course ◦ No credit course Math 083- Intermediate Algebra ◦ DevelopmentalMath Course ◦ No credit course Math 163 – CollegeAlgebra ◦ Credit General Education Math Course In the Spring of 2010 we started integrating our developmental courses with our CollegeAlgebra Credit Course We plan on adding two more AMP courses in the future: • • Introductory Algebra (082) paired with Stats (153) Introductory Algebra (082) paired with Finite Math and Modeling (125) Fall 2016 Spring 2010 sections offered 33 sections offered sections 081/082 16 sections 081/082 section 082/083 Not Offered 082/083 sections 083/163 17 sections 083/163 Class Information The classes are open for all students, no restrictions Each student must sign up for two three-credit courses, the lower and higher integrated course The students can not drop one without dropping the other The professor must give a separate grade for each course The topics for each course are integrated The student only has to buy the upper level textbook Math 081/082 Pre-Algebra/Introductory AlgebraMath 081/082 Basic Mathematics and Introductory Algebra Integrated topics are in bold below Math 081 Topics o o o o o o o o o Math 082 Topics Arithmetic of Rational Arithmetic of Integers Numbers Arithmetic of Rational o Algebra of Rational Numbers Numbers o Solving Equations with Rational Numbers Decimals o Formula Evaluation Simplifying Expressions o Defining Slope and Graphing Linear Equations Solving Equations o Solving Systems of Linear Ratio and Proportions Equations o Exponents and Scientific Percents Notation o Multiplying Polynomial Word problems Expressions Averages, Conversions, o Factoring and Graphs o Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring o My Class Set Up Class meets two days a week for three hours There is a timed 12 minute quiz at the beginning of each class Two topics are taught each class Each Lecture is 15-20 minutes long with a 20 minute group activity after every lecture Each class ends 20 minutes early for questions Grading Policy for all Developmental Courses A minimum of 85% of each student’s grade must be determined by proctored exams or quizzes without the use of notes or book This means that homework, in-class assignments, projects, take-home exams, etc may account for no more than 15% of the final grade All final exams for developmental courses, 081/082/083 are 30% of the student’s final grade This is a college wide policy for all developmental courses There is a common cumulative final exam My Math 081/082 Requirements Math 081/082 REQUIREMENTS Tests 55%: There will be six chapter tests throughout the semester There is be an 081 and an 082 portion on each of the first three tests Each part will be graded separately and recorded under the appropriate class grade Test is strictly 081 material and will finish the 081 course Test and are strictly 082 material Quizzes 15%: There will be a quiz at the beginning of each class I will drop your two lowest Math 081 and your two lowest Math 082 quiz grades at the end of the semester There are no make up quizzes!
