HOBBIES IN THE PAST
Like fashion, hobbies change with the times In our days, a lot of hobbies use
technology: we take digital photos and post them online and children play computer games But what did people use to do before this technology? Let’s take a look at some hobbies that were popular more than 100 years ago
Many of the sports that we play today were popular in the past, too Football became popular and had rules for the first time in the 19% century Many football clubs were started by employers, so that workers could play and stay fit Football was a man sports but both men and women played other sports, like tennis and croquet Unfortunately, the long skirts worn at that time didn’t help women with their games at all!
Many girls and women spent their spare times doing sewing and embroidery They used a needle and thread to make tiny stitches on a piece of fabric They made clothes and accessories such as scarves and gloves They also made home decorations They created beautiful pictures of flowers, birds and other patterns They also used to
embroider cushions, tablecloths and rugs
Girls in the 19 century used to play with dolls and doll’s houses At that time, toys were handmade The doll’s heads were often made of china and the bodies were made of wood Rocking horses were also very popular They were made of wood and their tails were made of real horsehair Boys used to play with toys trains and railways
Finally, people in the 19" century loved nature, so one popular hobby was collecting and drawing butterflies People used to catch butterflies in nets and fix them on special boards with pins They used to draw pictures that showed all the details and colours of the beautiful insects
Past or present, hobbies are a great way to pass the time They help us show our creativity and used our imagination

A recent report showed which countries were the healthiest to live in It included things like how long people live and what kind of health problems they have Some of the countries on the list were Australia, Italy and France, and Japan was at the top In Japan, more people live to be over eighty than in any other countries Part of the reason is that people have a very healthy diet They eat a lot of fish and vegetables They don’t eat much red meat and cheese We don’t all have to live in Japan to be healthier, but we should certainly all eat more fish and do more exercises, too

WE ALL NEED EXERCISE
The body needs exercise Exercise uses up food and keeps the body strong It makes your heart work hard in order to send blood to your muscles So exercise makes your heart and muscles strong Exercise also makes you feel good If you do exercise a few times a week, you will stay healthy and happy
Some people in America do not get enough exercise They have to work too much, so they don’t have enough exercise They work in office buildings sitting in a chair all day in front of computers They live far from their offices, and they have to drive their cars to get to work Therefore, when they get home at night, they don’t want to exercise after work
Today, many Americans are overweight This causes health problems for some people Doctors say that exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health So, many people are trying to get more exercise But it takes time to change, and when people do not see a difference right away, they lose interest in exercising
(From Reading for Speed and Fluency 2 by Nation & Malarcher (2007), pp.47-48, Compass
Publishing.) 0 The reading is about
A getting to work B different time of exercise ©people not getting enough exercise D people are too busy to exercise 1 The writer says that exercise
A only makes your muscles strong B sends blood to your muscles * C is only done in a gym
D makes your heart work hard to send blood to your muscles 2 According to the reading, which fact is NOT true?
A Exercise makes you feel good
B Some people do not get enough exercise C Many people have to drive their cars to work
D Many people don’t want to get exercise after work because they are lazy
Trang 23-21-3 The writer mentions that in America,
A many people spend much time driving to work B most office workers can get a lot of exercise
C many people are overweight because they don’t get enough exercise
D Americans don’t like doing exercise
4 Why don’t the Americans get enough exercise?
A They find it difficult to exercise B They don’t have enough time to exercise C They feel tired of exercising D They don’t want to lose weight
5 What does the phrase ‘lose interest’ in the passage mean?
A become bored with B do not find something C lose weight D feel like doing something
4 Read the text and answer the questions
THE SECRETS TO A LONG LIFE
Why is it that some people live to be over a hundred, while most of us die much sooner? How long you live depends on where you live A person who lives in a city in Australia will probably live longer than a person living in a poor part of Africa So, what
can you do to add more years to your life? You can make healthy choices That means
eating healthy foods and getting enough exercise
Being overweight may make your life shorter because you have a higher chance to have health problems You can start by changing what you eat Eat less red meat instead of chicken or fish Fish is really good for helping you live a longer life You should eat lots of vegetables and make sure you are getting all of the vitamins you need You also need to get enough exercise There are different types of exercises Some exercise is good for
the heart Other types of exercise are good for making you stronger Lifting weights is a
good example Along with taking care of your body, you also have to take care of your mind Don’t work too hard Try to relax and do something fun each day If you follow
these simple rules, you'll have a good chance of living a long time
(From Reading for Speed and Fluency 2 by Nation & Malarcher (2007), pp.49-50, Compass Publishing.) 0 What does your length of living depend on?
It depends on where we live
