5.5.1 Double Play SUMMARY Fifth-grader Bill Harrison scores a double play when he makes the majors in the Little League tryouts and scores an A on his research project For his project, he must interview someone with first-hand knowledge of the Vietnam War An older man in the neighborhood who acts a little oddly turns out to be a Vietnam veteran with a lot of interesting stories to tell It also turns out that he and Bill share another interest—baseball LESSON VOCABULARY eerie pondered spectacles intersection severe withered INTRODUCE THE BOOK INTRODUCE THE TITLE AND AUTHOR Discuss with students the title and the author of Double Play Based on the title, ask students to say what they think the book will be about Ask them to say what the term double play means and what sport it comes from BUILD BACKGROUND Discuss what students know about the Vietnam War Ask if they know when it was, and if they know any Vietnam veterans PREVIEW/USE TEXT FEATURES As students preview the book, invite them to notice the illustrations Draw their attention to the map on page 15, the graphic on page 26, and the photo on page 32 Explain that these text features give the reader different kinds of information about the story PLOT AND CHARACTER PRIOR KNOWLEDGE READ THE BOOK SET PURPOSE Have students set a purpose for reading Double Play Students’ interest in baseball and the war in Vietnam should guide this purpose Ask students to think about the difference between researching a topic in the library and interviewing a person with firsthand knowledge STRATEGY SUPPORT: PRIOR KNOWLEDGE Have readers write down what they know about the Vietnam War before they start the book Have them add new information as they read COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS PAGE What is the first problem that seems to occupy Bill Harrison’s mind? (getting into the majors in Little League) PAGE What details does the author give that make the man mowing the lawn seem a little odd? (has a long gray beard that seems out of place in the neighborhood, walks backwards and pushes lawnmower behind him, Rob’s mom says he’s crazy, Craig’s dad says he is sick) PAGE 11 What are the two parts of the research assignment? (Part 1: what students learned from books; Part 2: what it was like to really be there) PAGE 14 Why did President Kennedy send troops to Vietnam in 1961? (The U.S didn’t want the Communists in the north to rule all of Vietnam.) PAGE 25 How did Mr Jenkins’s war stories change Bill’s idea of war? (Possible response: Jenkins made him see that war is hard, dangerous, and not a lot of fun.) PAGE 27 What common interests Bill and Mr Jenkins have? (baseball) 92 Double Play 16917_LRD_TG_092-093 92 12/2/05 12:18:25 PM REVISIT THE BOOK READER RESPONSE Bill comes to like Mr Jenkins instead of thinking he is strange Bill tells his friends that Mr Jenkins is a nice person instead of sharing their poor opinion of him as he did before Responses will vary Possible response: spectacle: event, eyeglasses; prospect: possibility, extensive view; pilot: a person who flies an aircraft, to act as a guide to The first definition of each word applies in the selection Responses will vary EXTEND UNDERSTANDING Have students look again at the map on page 15 Ask them to describe the location of Vietnam Have them look again at the graphic on page 26 Ask: What words describe this graphic? Have them look again at the photo on page 32 Ask: How you think the people in this photo felt? Why? RESPONSE OPTIONS WRITING Suggest that students write one paragraph from Bill’s point of view, and one paragraph from Mr Jenkins’s point of view Have them tell what they thought about their first meeting SOCIAL STUDIES CONNECTION Students can learn about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., by using the Internet or going to the library Suggest they find out about Maya Lin, who designed the memorial, or read the accounts of veterans who have visited the memorial Have students tell about their research Skill Work TEACH/REVIEW VOCABULARY Have students find the word intersection on page Ask: What is a synonym for intersection? Continue in a similar fashion with the remaining vocabulary words TARGET SKILL AND STRATEGY PLOT AND CHARACTER Remind students that the plot is a pattern of events, usually organized around a problem or conflict Explain that characters are the people in stories Authors usually tell what their characters look like, how they act, and what kind of people they are As they read, have students think about the plot Ask: What happens at the beginning, middle, and end of the plot? Ask: Do any of the characters change? How? Have students list the characters in the book Have them brainstorm words that describe each character, and list them under each character’s name Have them read the list of words for each character and choose the word that best describes each person PRIOR KNOWLEDGE Remind students that prior knowledge is what a reader knows about a given topic gathered from reading and personal experience Active readers add to and revise their prior knowledge as they read Ask students to tell their prior knowledge about the Vietnam War Ask them to keep track of new things they learn about the war as they read the selection Have them think about the role the Vietnam War plays in the development of the plot of the selection How does learning about the War affect the main character? ADDITIONAL SKILL INSTRUCTION CAUSE AND EFFECT Remind students that cause is defined as “why something happened.” Effect is defined as “what happened.” Explain that sometimes, clue words such as because, so, and since indicate a relationship between why something happened and what happened Have students be aware of what happens in the plot and why characters react as they Double Play 16917_LRD_TG_092-093 93 93 12/2/05 12:18:27 PM Double Play Name Plot and Character • The plot is a pattern of events usually organized around a problem or conflict • A character is a person who takes part in the events of a story Directions Fill in the paragraph organizer below Title Characters Setting Problem © Pearson Education Plot Solution 94 16917_LRD_TG_094-095 94 11/17/05 9:07:51 AM Double Play Name Vocabulary Directions Draw a line from each word to its definition Check the Words You Know eerie severe intersection spectacles eerie a where two streets cross each other intersection b odd, strange, frightening pondered c thought about deeply severe d shriveled up spectacles e eyeglasses withered f strong, harsh pondered withered © Pearson Education Directions Write a paragraph about Double Play Use as many vocabulary words as you can 95 16917_LRD_TG_094-095 95 12/2/05 4:15:48 PM ... aware of what happens in the plot and why characters react as they Double Play 16917_LRD _TG_ 092-093 93 93 12/2/05 12:18:27 PM Double Play Name Plot and Character • The plot is a pattern of events...
