Fruits : How Healthy Are They ? An Overview Of Fruit Business In India Presented By:Balachandar R (14) Nishant Kumar Pandey (30) Fruit Business Part of Horticulture    Part of Horticulture Hortus means garden, Cultus means tilling Horticulture is the science or art of cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants Horticulture Contributes 29.5% of our agricultural GDP, Occupying 8.5% of total agricultural area and covering 10% of total agricultural export earning Share In Total Horticulture Production Macro Level Analysis      The total production of fruits in the world is around 370 million MT There are almost 180 families of fruits that are grown all over the world citrus fruits constitute around 20% of world's total fruit Other big fruit producer:Brazil, China,USA World fruit production has been relatively steady over the past four years In 2003 world fruit production reached 379.15 million metric tons, a 0.85 percent increase from 2002 World Fruit Production, 1996-2003 India : Producer Vs Exporter Production  India : 2nd largest producer of fruits annual production of 45.2 million tonnes and a share of 10.5 % in world fruit production ( Year 2002-2003) Export  Total export – 0.44 million tonnes  Total net export value – 81 Crore Rs Fruits ….Some Fact files     Area under fruits- 3.73 MH Production of Fruits- 45.2 MT A total of 460 high-yielding varieties and hybrids of horticultural crops developed All though India is the largest producer of fruits in the world, the production per capita is only about 100 gms per day However, it is estimated that more than 20-22% of the total production of fruits is lost due to spoilage at various post harvest stages, thus the per capita availability of fruits is further reduced to around 80 gms per day which is almost half the requirements for a balanced diet History     1954 -Separate section of Horticulture at IARI, New Delhi 1968 – IIHR, Bangalore was established Not significance growth and focus upto 7th five year plan Rapid expansion of infrastructure took place in 8th and 9th five year plans Plan wise allocation Fruit Export Fruit Mango Citrus Grapes Apple Pomegranate Papaya Pineapple Banana Poor Infrastructure Problems In Processing Fruits Poor Farm Management Practices Nonavailability of quality planting material Market Linkages Competitiveness Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures ISSUES OF CONCERN Contd…… Small Land Holding: Category Marginal Farmers (Less than Hectare) Small Farmers (1-2 Hectares) Semi-Medium Farmers (2-4 Hectares) Medium Farmers (4-10 Hectares) Large Farmers 87500 144444        Lack Of Infrastructure: India processes only 2% of the fruits compared to 70% by Brazil and USA 22% Of the produce is spoiled because of lack of processing facilities Post harvest loss between to 30% REASONS: Lack of cold storages, freezing chambers, dehumidified temperature storage Absence of Transport and Road infrastructure Problems In Processing Fruits     Processed fruits hold a share of 27 to 57 percent in the export of fruits There is no assured supply of raw materials for the processing plants Relatively indifferent quality of the output Non competitive prices because of high energy costs and high packaging costs Imposed by the strict quality standards of importing countries There is also problem of non-availability of suitable varieties of raw materials for Processing Market Linkages:       CHANNELS OF FRUITS: Producer–consumer (village sale) Producer–Trader–consumer (local sale) Producer–pre-harvest
