si ce on ns f e rom The Sun Fire V480 server is a rack-based server that measures 8.75 inches high by 17.5 inches wide by 24 inches deep (22.225 centimeters [cm] x 44.7 cm x 60.96 cm), as depicted in Figure 1-1 The server weighs approximately 79 pounds (35.83 kilograms [kg]) in its minimum configuration and up to 97 pounds (44 kg) fully configured The server is mountable in either a two or four-post or two-post rack The server ships with a rack-mount kit and a cable management arm, which are required for installing the Sun Fire V480 server into a Sun four-post rack (Delorean, Sun Fire rack, or NGR-900 rack) or other EIA-310-D-1992-compliant, 19-inch wide cabinet Space Considerations The Sun Fire V480 server is five Rack Units (RU) high and 24 inches deep The rack that you use must be able to accommodate these dimensions, as well as the total weight of the server or servers, any other installed components, and the rack kits The Sun expansion cabinet is 72 inches tall and holds a power sequencer that allows an administrator (with the aid of a colleague due to the weight involved) to install six Sun Fire V480 servers into the rack (seven servers would fit into a rack, but the rack could only power six servers) D o no Caution – When you install servers into the rack, ensure that the rack is securely bolted to the floor or has sturdy and extendable anti-tip legs installed front of the Sun Fire V480 server The front panel also allows you to access to the server’s two power supplies, the slim-line DVD-ROM, system LEDs and the front panel security lock (see Figure 1-2) D most of the items on the front panel command module, including the disk drive bays, the power button, and the system control switch With the media door closed and secured, both the DVD-ROM and the security lock can be accessed The security lock is used to secure the media door and Fan Tray The power supply access panel covers both power supplies and the lower portion of the CPU fan tray The access panel: Turn the key clockwise from the vertical to the horizontal position to unlock the media door and open the power supply access panel ● Turn the key counterclockwise to the vertical module or system status and control panel The system control switch controls whether a user can reprogram the system firmware, power on and off the system, or enable the system firmware diagnostics port on the RSC card The port is accessible through the back panel on the server The variables associated with this port include: ● modem_parity ● modem_stop ● modem_data ● country_code Serial Port protocol over the modem link, you can set up the PPP variables The PPP variables associated with this port include: ● ppp_local_ip_addr ● ppp_remote_ip_addr ● ppp_enabled Alert Variables Alert variables are associated with the method used to send an alert, its configuration, and the content of the alert A RSC user is alerted by way of paging, or email, or a combination of the two Paging Alerts For paging alerts, several variables enable paging, configure the pager modem, pager service password, pager modem baud rate, pager modem data bits, pager modem parity, pager modem stop bits, and ID information within the message A duplicate set of pager variables for a second pager call is also available D o no The variables associated with paging alerts include: ● page_enabled ● (individual name or alias) of the mailbox that receives the alert and the addresses of the email hosts The RSC card can continue to run even after a server powers down Email alerts can be used to notify personnel of catastrophic events, such as power failures The variables associated with email alerts include: ● mail_enabled ● mailuser ● mailhost Generic Alert Information The alert variables also define some of the generic information that will be sent in the alert, such as service contract number, server location, telephone number of the system administrator, department name, and host ip_gateway ● tpe_link_test Console Session Variable D o no The console session variable is a series of keystrokes that allow you to toggle between the RSC shell and the system console The console ec e t t rm o is Li si ce on ns f e rom ● Using RSC Reset You use the resetrsc command (Table 11-5 on page 11-30) to perform a hard reset of the RSC and to terminate all RSC sessions The resetrsc command exists in both the RSC shell and as a subcommand of the rscadm utility In the RSC shell, you need Administrative permissions to execute the resetrsc command, or you must be logged in as root to execute this command through the rscadm utility Using Server Reset D o no You use the xir command to perform an externally generated reset to the server The server is left at the OBP ok prompt, leaving most of the server’s memory and registers intact To return to the OS, you must reboot the server You need Reset permissions to execute the xir command Use the reset command to perform a forced reset of the server The server will reboot according to the boot_mode designated on the server You need Reset/Power permissions to execute the reset command Caution – The reset command can cause file the RSC date and time (Table 11-5 on page 11-30) to the server’s date and time by performing the date command with the -s option rsc> date -s Note – For troubleshooting purposes, the server and RSC date and time must be synchronized You can also view or set the RSC date and time through the following RSC shell commands: date, setdate or showdate Use the rscadm command, to view or set the time and date with the date command # rscadm date [[mmdd]HHMM | mmddHHMM[cc]yy] [.SS] Maintaining the Modem D o no If you need to reconfigure the RSC modem at the modem level, use the modem-setup subcommand (Table 11-5 on page 11-30) of the rscadm utility This opens a direct session with the modem from the host server Depending on modem model, you can also use the modem’s built-in command set
