Kirigami là nghệ thuật cắt giấy truyền thống của Nhật Bản, với tên gọi được ghép từ hai chữ : “kiru” (có nghĩa là cắt) và “kami” (là giấy). Tính đối xứng là đặc điểm nổi bật nhất trong kirigami truyền thống. Hình bông tuyết, ngũ giác, và bông hoa là những hình ảnh cổ điển quen thuộc đặc trưng cho kirigami mà trong đó, cắt giấy đơn thuần chỉ nhằm tôn lên cấu trúc tối giản, cân xứng nhưng cũng rất linh hoạt của thiết kế. Nghệ thuật cắt giấy được cho là lần đầu tiên xuất hiện trong các đền chùa Nhật Bản như một cách thể hiện lòng thành kính trước các vị thần. Đến khoảng thế kỷ XVII, Kirigami được biết đến rộng rãi khắp châu Á như một hình thức nghệ thuật đích thực. Không chỉ riêng ở Nhật mà cả ở Trung Quốc, người ta tạo nên các thiết kế kirigami để biểu trưng cho những điều tốt đẹp và quan trọng như: Thịnh vượng, Hoàn hảo, Quý phái, Trang nhã hay thậm chí là mối liên kết giữa con người và vũ trụ. Bunraku, một loại hình múa rối Nhật Bản đôi lúc cũng sáng tạo những con rối bằng giấy từ kỹ thuật Kirigami, nhưng vẫn đảm bảo các bộ phận có thể cử động được.
