We thank you for the toys! We thank you, good Saint Nicholas! You bring us many joys We thank you, good Saint Nicholas! We thank you for the toys! We thank you, good Saint Nicholas! You bring us many joys St Nicholas, an echo story by Page Zyromski - Start with a question: Do you know what an echo is? - Instructions: "Now everybody, stand up, stretch your legs! Repeat after me and as I do! Now, let's GO!" St Nicholas lived a long time ago (over shoulder on "ago") But he was a real person like you and me (point to "you" and "me") When he was still just a little boy, (measure "so high" with hand) his mother and father died (close eyes, droop head) This made Nicholas very sad (pull down corners of mouth: sad face) But… it also gave him a love for children (hands over heart) His parents left him lots of money, (rub fingers together for "money, money") so he gave presents to the poor (reach in pocket, hand out "money") Once he heard about a man (cup ear for "heard") who had three daughters, (hold up three fingers, tick off) but no money for their wedding (rub fingers together for "money": shake head) Nicholas heard the oldest daughters crying (rub eyes, pretend to weep) So one night when everyone was asleep, (pillow head on hands) Nicholas tiptoed by the poor man's house, (turn to the side, tiptoe, make "shhh" motions) and threw a bag of gold over the wall (toss imaginary "bag," like basketball) In the morning the daughter woke up, (yawn, rub eyes, stretch) and was so surprised! (slap cheeks with hands) A bag of gold was lying in the yard! (point to "bag" on ground, amazed) She ran off and got married right away (turn to the side, run briskly in place) The father knelt down on the knees, (kneel down, awed) and thanked God (bow head, clasp hands in fervent prayer) Nicholas is the saint of all children (indicate lots of "children," measuring "so high") He wanted them to be happy, (turn up corners of mouth with fingers) especially the children of the poor (pull "pockets" inside out, turn empty palms up, sad) He taught us to give our presents (hand out "gifts") in Jesus' name (point to heavens) Alelujah! (fall on your knees, stretching hands in prayer to the sky)  The real Santa Claus was Saint Nicholas, a 4th century Bishop in Turkey (former Greece) Known for his kindness, especially towards children, he eventually became popular in Holland, where he was known as 'Sinter Klaas'  Around 1870, the Americans turned the name into Santa Claus  Until 1890, he was described as tall and thin, wearing green or brown as often as red  Santa's present appearance was created by Swedish artist Jenny Nystrom in a series of Christmas cards  Fellow Swede Haddon Sundblom helped universalise the new image when he adopted Nystrom's ideas for Coca-Cola's advertising campaign - Santa matched Coke's red-and-white logo Sundblom also refined the character, making his body a little fatter and giving him his herd of flying reindeer  The idea of Santa Claus entering people's homes by dropping down the chimney comes from American Scholar Clement Moore's famous 1822 poem A Visit from St Nicholas May the blessings of Saint Nicholas Illuminate your world with peace, love & joy!  The real Santa Claus was Saint Nicholas, a 4th century Bishop in Turkey (former Greece) Known for his kindness, especially towards children, he eventually became popular in Holland, where he was known as 'Sinter Klaas'  Around 1870, the Americans turned the name into Santa Claus  Until 1890, he was described as tall and thin, wearing green or brown as often as red  Santa's present appearance was created by Swedish artist Jenny Nystrom in a series of Christmas cards  Fellow Swede Haddon Sundblom helped universalise the new image when he adopted Nystrom's ideas for Coca-Cola's advertising campaign - Santa matched Coke's red-and-white logo Sundblom also refined the character, making his body a little fatter and giving him his herd of flying reindeer  The idea of Santa Claus entering people's homes by dropping down the chimney comes from American Scholar Clement Moore's famous 1822 poem A Visit from St Nicholas May the blessings of Saint Nicholas Illuminate your world with peace, love & joy! I shortened it a bit Children repaet in chorus after me, showing with body language and having fun For the beginners in primary school: If you think, the smaller kids won't understand the story, you can start with the colour book pictures to teach the vocabulary first I have them coloured and pin them with magnets on the board and write the words on the piece of paper to match them next to the picture I will paste all those 15 pictures in this file below The words you pre-teach for this echo story are: St Nicholas, person, little boy, mother and father, love, children, money, presents, daughter, wedding, money bag, wall, yard, saint, give presents a- After it, I use a symbols worksheet for middle ages kids in the primary b- For the smallest kids we learn the poem Saint Nicholas and they colour it c- and for older we read Did you know? and discuss about it For the end, for the smallest kids: I usually buy some small chocolate figures and put them in the plastic boot on the outside shelf of the window (before the class starts) and put the St Nicholas letter in it too Before the end of the hour I secretly ring the small bell, asking children What was this? Children find the boot with chocolates and read the letter from St Nicholas and treat with chocolates Here it is pasted: MY DEAR CHILDREN ! I HEAR YOU ARE GOOD CHILDREN YOUR TEACHER SAYS SO, AND I AM WATCHING YOU TOO I COME WITH MY DONKEY TO GIVE YOU A SMALL PRESENT AND REMEMBER: BE GOOD AND LEARN VERY HARD! I LOVE YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!!
