An answer key is provided at the back of the book for your convenience Keep On Going! Show your child that math can be fun by playing a multiplication/division game together Give your child a multiplication problem and have him or her solve it and then turn it into a division problem to check the answer For example: ì = 28 28 ữ = or 28 ÷ = 0XOWLSOLFDWLRQDQG'LYLVLRQƠ/ Scholastic Learning Express: Multiplication and Division, Level © Scholastic using a number line Date: A number line can be used to help you multiply One factor tells you how long each jump should be This is like skip-counting the other factor tells you how many jumps to take × = 12 ×2 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 30 3×3=9 ×3 12 15 18 21 24 27 30 Use the number lines above to help you multiply by 2s and 3s × = _ × = _ × = _ × = _ × = _ × = _ × = _ × = _ × = _ When multiplying by 0, the product is always When multiplying by 1, the product is always the other factor ×2 ×3 ×5 ×3 ×2 ×7 ×2 ×3 ×3 ×2 ×2 ×1 0XOWLSOLFDWLRQDQG'LYLVLRQÔ/ Scholastic Learning Express: Multiplication and Division, Level © Scholastic using the concept of grouping Date: Multiplication is repeated addition using equal groups The numbers being multiplied together are called factors The answer is called the product Read the problem and draw a model to show your answer Example Charlie’s coach bought bags of hockey pucks There are pucks in each bag How many pucks did he buy altogether? This problem can be solved by drawing a model + factor × + factor = 12 pucks = 12 pucks product There are equal groups of pucks Charlie’s team played games They scored points in each game How many points did they score in all? (Draw a box for each point.) Charlie and his friend each have hockey sticks How many sticks they have?
