Lecture Notes Week – Research Methodology This module booklet provides you with introductory information on research methodologies you will develop during academic year A Research is evolved from the incessant urge to search for truth It is a systematic study on unveiling an initial assumption This assumption is acknowledged as the research question B In order to design the research question, you need to identify your object of analysis, i.e what your inquiry is about You also have to learn about the theory and understand the previous research carried out on the object of analysis Furthermore, you will have to investigate the methods in previous researches C Once you have defined your research question, you should consider the secondary sources you intend to consult so as to learn about relevant theories You are also expected to indicate a preliminary literature review which should be pertinent to your research inquiry D It is time to concentrate on the following procedure: choose the most suitable methodology A sample questionnaire, coding sheet, observation sheet should be designed It enables you to focus on the ideological factors that are in accordance with the theories used in order to support your research question E On the one hand, you may rely on a research methodology which is known as quantitative methodology It allows you to evaluate theories deductively as it measures the variables, uses statistical procedures and produces numbered data An example of quantitative methodology is a survey, i.e a sample of the population may answer questions and the result is a numerical description of trends in the population Experimental research is also used to analyse different groups who respond to a treatment F On the other hand, you may develop your research through qualitative methodology It enables you to evaluate social issues inductively, which means that the data is collected from participants and is thus interpreted by the researcher You may use ethnography if you are to interview a cultural group over a longer period of time Otherwise, you can develop a case study, which means that you need to collect detailed information so that you can carry out a deep analysis of an activity Another strategy is phenomenological research and you should rely on it if you are to explore phenomena and human experiences Finally, you may consider narrative research if you are to collect individuals’ stories and retell and document them into a narrative chronology G A combination of methodologies may also be used in research This is an association of qualitative and quantitative procedures and it is recognised as mixed research methodologies In order to a research, you have to collect both qualitative and quantitative data and you should be able to use a rationale so as to mix and integrate data as you develop your inquiry question www.AdultEnglishSchool.com | www.IELTSPracticeTests.com | www.TutorAgent.com Questions 24-28 The Westminster Abbey The funeral procession stopped overnight, and they erected a cross in Charing Although you will not be able to see the original Eleanor Cross, you will be delighted with the picturesque paintings on the walls of the Charing Cross railway station We have just reached Westminster Ladies and gentlemen, please get your cameras ready for London’s most famous landmark: the Big Ben It is named after its first commissioner, Sir Benjamin Hall, and it was completed in 1859 It is important to note that the name Big Ben refers to the 13th ton bell inside the clock tower, and not to clock tower itself You may see a light at the top of the tower at night It means that Parliament is sitting The Parliament was rebuilt after being destroyed by the great fire of 1834, and the Houses of Parliament is now characterised by the neo-Gothic style You will also be able to see Westminster Bridge over the River Thames This bridge connects Westminster (north) to Lambeth (south) It is mostly painted green as this is the colour of the leather seats in the House of Commons Now, if you look at the opposite side, you can see Lambeth Bridge and it is red as it refers to the leather seats in the Houses of Lords Let us turn left on St Margaret Street and turn right on the Sanctuary Here we are in Dean’s Yard and, ladies and gentlemen, this is the magnificent Westminster Abbey This is a popular name for the College Church of St Peter at Westminster and it is a Gothic style church There was a tradition that a fisherman known as Aldrich had a vision of St Peter They had an abundance of salmons in the River Thames over the following years Westminster Abbey was founded in 960 and a community of Benedictine monks moved here It has been the coronation church and the burial site since 1066 Westminster Abbey was rebuilt in Anglo-French Gothicstyle in 1245 and it has a medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint at the centre Royal weddings also take place in Westminster Abbey Ladies and gentlemen, we are now approaching our final destination This is Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the Queen in London The history dates back 1761 when George III bought Buckingham House for his wife, the Queen Charlotte A series of reconstructions took place in the following years and the house was transformed into a French neo-classical palace The north and south wings were demolished and Marble Arch was placed in order to commemorate the British victory in the Battle of Trafalgar The principal façade is on the East Front Although it was completed in 1850, it was remodelled by Sir Aston Webb in 1913 You can also see the Queen Victoria Memorial statue in front of the entrance to Buckingham Palace It was sculpted by Sir Thomas Brock in 1911 You will be able to see the ceremony of Changing the Guard in front of Buckingham Palace It is scheduled to take place every day this summer at 11.30 am You are welcome to have a wonderful experience this task We recommend 35 minutes In the old days it was expected that we would have a job for life Now we don’t expect to have the same job for more than a couple of years What is your opinon of this situation? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience You should write at least 250 words 270-290 words is recommended www.AdultEnglishSchool.com | www.IELTSPracticeTests.com | www.TutorAgent.com 14 General IELTS Writing Practice - Suggested Answers These are one of many possible ways of writing the answers to these questions There is no right or wrong answer, just correct or incorrect English! Task Dear Sir, Subject: Recurrent Problems With Car Repair I had brought my car - a 2000 Holden Rodeo DX TFR9 - to your garage on September 29th, 2010 for an overhaul Since then I have had to return the car to the garage three more times, and still its problems don't seem to end After the overhaul, on returning home I discovered a leaking oil sump After this problem was sorted out, the very next day there was a loud noise in the engine bay Your staff had to haul the vehicle back to the garage with a trailer to carry out repairs Today, there was a strange noise in the engine bay yet again I fail to understand why the garage is unable to resolve the car's problems once and for all Is it a case of gross negligence, or downright incompetence? I am sure you understand the negative impact an unsatisfied customer can have on your business I would like you to direct your most experienced personnel to take a look and fix the car's problems to their most competent best immediately I look forward to receiving your response to this matter Yours faithfully _[your name] Task There was a time when people completed their school or college, and eagerly sent out their resumes for a job in companies of their choice The day the appointment letter hiring them for the job landed in their hands used to be a red-letter day It was an indication that life was now well set, right up to retirement Job-hopping was not the norm, and company loyalty mattered more than anything else Today, "company loyalty" is a forgotten term It is now very common to have a string of job tenures not lasting more than two years in one's resume The churn in human resources is a sign of the times Downsizing and resizing are the order of the day, and one feels lucky upon leaving the place of work without the proverbial pink-slip being handed over A resume is now a commodity, to be encashed at the next hiring round being conducted at the competitor's gate next door An economy that has been swinging up and down is in major part the reason behind this change of attitude The implication of the attitude-change is clear The next job might require a set of skills totally different from what one had excelled at in the last job, and different from what one had learned back in college Today's organizational scenario demands a mindset that is open to the idea of learning new skills It is not unusual, therefore, to see somebody who worked as a bean-counter for a garment-manufacturer in their earlier avatar, now marketing web-based solutions for an internet company It is obvious that the good old days are not going to return any time soon Survival in the job market depends on one's marketability, which in turn depends on whether one can supply the skill that is in demand [Task example - over 190 words Task example - over 300 words Suggested score - Band 8.5] www.AdultEnglishSchool.com | www.IELTSPracticeTests.com | www.TutorAgent.com 15 General IELTS Speaking Practice Test www.ieltspracticetests.com Hi My name is _ I’m your examiner today Can you tell me your full name please?
