Definitions Appendix 355 v ftoc.indd v 06/09/12 9:15 AM ftoc.indd vi 06/09/12 9:15 AM Preface RSMeans Illustrated Construction Dictionary, Student Edition is a must-have companion to any construction-related curriculum The engineering staff at RSMeans has edited the original RSMeans Illustrated Construction Dictionary to apply specifically for the student Terms are defined in easy-to-understand language, and supplemented by over 1,400 illustrations In addition to a higher percentage of illustrations, many illustrations new to this Student Edition have been added to make learning easier.Whenever possible, words or phrases are explained in non-technical language When technical terms are used, they are also defined as separate entries Very old architectural terms are purposely omitted, as this is intended to be a current construction dictionary with up-to-date terminology A useful appendix illustrates and identifies the symbols that a building professional is likely to encounter Terms for new construction trends, such as BIM, building automation, energy and environmental conservation, “green” construction practice, engineered lumber products, the newest seismic technologies, and historic preservation are also covered The editors obtained the assistance of industry groups, associations, societies, and manufacturers, as well as published authors who are nationally recognized authorities, to achieve this comprehensive construction trades, practices, and equipment dictionary vii fpref.indd vii 06/09/12 9:15 AM fpref.indd viii 06/09/12 9:15 AM X ponderosa pine yard A unit of length in the English system equal to 3Ј A measure of concrete One cubic yard ϭ 3Ј ϫ 3Ј ϫ 3Ј in volume, or 27 cubic feet A term applied to that part of a plot not occupied by the building or driveway yardage An amount of excavated material equal to the volume in cubic yards An area of surface (two dimensions) measured in square yards yard drain A drain in a pavement or earth surface, used to drain surface water yard lumber (general building construction lumber) Lumber graded according to its size, length, and intended use, stockpiled in a lumber yard Y-branch (wye branch) A plumbing system branch, in the shape of a Y yelm A bundle of reeds or straw used as thatching material for a roof Y-fitting (wye fitting) A pipe fitting in the shape of a Y One arm is usually at 45° to the main fitting and may be of reduced size yield The volume of freshly mixed concrete produced from a known quantity of Y-fitting ingredients The total weight of ingredients divided by the unit weight of the freshly mixed concrete The number of product units, such as block, produced per bag of cement or per batch of concrete A rate of return as calculated by the profit earned on an investment over a specified period of time yield point The point at which a stressed material begins to exhibit plastic properties The point beyond which the material will not return to its original length yield strength The stress, less than the maximum attainable, at which the ratio of stress to strain has dropped well below its value at low stresses, or at which a material exhibits a specified limiting deviation from the usual proportionality of stress to strain Y-level A surveyor’s level with the telescope and level supported by Y-shaped fittings The telescope can be removed and reversed in order to average out internal sources of error yoke A tie or clamping device around column forms or over wall or footing forms to keep them from spreading as a result of lateral pressure of fresh concrete Part of a structural assembly for slipforming that keeps the forms yoke from spreading and transfers form loads to the jacks A collar for supporting pipe A soil pipe fitting in the shape of a Y Pipe assembly used to install a water meter yoke vent A pipe connecting upward from a soil or waste stack to a vent stack for venting A vertical or 45° relief vent of the continuous waste and vent type formed by the extension of an upright wye-branch inlet of the horizontal branch to the stack Referred to as a dual yoke vent when two horizontal branches are thus vented
