Công ty Cổ phần Đầu tư Công nghệ Giáo dục IDJCÔNG TY CỔ PHẦN ĐẦU TƯ CÔNG NGHỆGIÁO DỤC IDJĐỀ THI SỐ 2Họ và tên thí sinh: Số báo danh: .ĐỀ THI THỬ ĐẠI HỌC 2011MÔN THI: TIẾNG ANHThời gian làm bài: 90 phút(Đề có 11 trang, gồm 80 câu trắc nghiệm)Mã đề thiTA002Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 1 to 10A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake, one of the world’s largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice. Now known as Lake Vostok, this huge body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica. The lake is geothermal heat from the earth’s core. The thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates it from the frigid temperatures (the lowest ever recorded on Earth) on the surface. The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial survey of the arena. Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body of water of indeterminate size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made scientists aware of the tremendous size of the lake; the satellite – borne radar detected an extremely flat region where the ice remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake. The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the scientific community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have survived for thousands upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and elevated ultraviolet light that have affected organism in more exposed areas. The downside of the discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate and in the problems associated with obtaining uncontaminated samples from the lake without actually exposing the lake to contamination. Scientists are looking for possible ways to accomplish this.Question 1: The purpose of the passage is to .A. explain how Lake Vostok was discovered B. provide satellite data concerning Antarctica C. discuss future plans for lake VostokD. present an unexpected aspect of Antarctica’s geographyQuestion 2: The word “lies” in paragraph 1 could best be .A. sleepsB. sitsGiáo viên: Hoàng Thị Tâm Thành www.hoc360.vn Công ty Cổ phần Đầu tư Công nghệ Giáo dục IDJC. tells falsehoodsD. inclinesQuestion 3: What is true of Lake Vostok?A. UnfortunatelyRead the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 71 to 80Carbon dating can be used to estimate the age of any organic natural material; it has been used successfully in archeology to determine the age of ancient artifacts as well as in a variety of other fields. The principle underlying the use of carbon dating is that carbon is a part of all living things on Earth. Since a radioactive substance such as carbon-14 has a known half-life, the amount of carbon-14 remaining in an object can be used to date that object.Carbon-14 has a half-life of 5,570 years, which means that after that number of years half of the carbon-14 atoms have decayed into nitrogen-14. It is the ratio of carbon-14 to nitrogen-14 in thatsubstance that indicates the age of the substance. If, for example, in a particular sample the amount ofGiáo viên: Hoàng Thị Tâm Thành www.hoc360.vn Công ty Cổ phần Đầu tư Công nghệ Giáo dục IDJcarbon-14 is roughly equivalent to the amount of nitrogen-14, this indicates that around half of the carbon-14 has decayed into nitrogen-14, and the sample is approximately 5,570 years old.Carbon dating cannot be used effectively in dating objects that are older than 80,000 years. When objects are that old, much of the carbon-14 has already decayed into nitrogen-14, and the miniscule amount that is left does not provide a reliable measurement of age. In the case of older objects, other age-dating methods are available, methods which use radioactive atoms with longer half-lives than carbon has.Question 71: This passage is mainly about .A. the difference between carbon-14 and nitrogen-14B. one method of dating old objectsC. archeology and the study of ancient artifactsD. various uses for carbonQuestion 72: The word “estimate” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to .A. understandB. hideC. rateD. approximateQuestion 73: The pronoun “it” in paragraph 1 refers to .A. carbon datingB. the ageC. any organic natural materialD. archeologyQuestion 74: Which of the following is NOT true about carbon-14?A.
