Objectives By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - Develop such reading micro-skills as scanning for specific ideas, skimming for general information, and guessing meaning in context. - Use the information they have read to discuss the topic. Warm – up Competition game – Net work: - T prepares a handout with a network of the word “Friendship” - T divides the class into groups and gives each group a handout. T asks Ss to complete the network. The winner will be the group completing the network in the shortest period of time. Time 6’ III. New lesson Step 1: Pre - Reading - T asks the whole class to look at the picture on page 12 and asks them some questions: 1. What are the girls and boys doing in the picture? 2. How they feel? 3. What does the picture tell you? 10’ Students’ activities Group work - Ss work in group the the task friendship Pair work and individual work: Answers: 1. The picture tells me that friends can Teacher: NguyÔn ThÞ Uyªn - T asks Ss to work in pair to read the poem and answer the question” What you think of the friend in the poem?” - T explains some new words: “Lasing, to be concerned with, constant, rumour, gossip, trust, sorrow, pursuit” If there is some time left, T may ask some Ss to make sentences with the above words to check their understanding. Step 2: While reading Activity - T writes these words on the BB: “acquaintance, incapable of, mutual, unselfish, give and take, friend, loyal to, suspicious” then instructs Ss to read the passage quickly and stop at the lines that contain these words to guess the meanings - T checks that Ss understand the words correctly. T can check students’ understanding by asking them to provide the Vietnamese equivalents to the words. Activity - T gives Ss some time to re-read the passage and some strategies to find the main idea. - Calls on some Ss to give their ideas and asks others to give remarks. - Gives feedback and the correct answer. Activity - Asks students how to this task. If they not remember, T may instruct them to use some strategies to the task. Step 3: Post reading happily things together. - Work in pair and answer the questions: “The friend in the poem is very dedicated and thoughtful. He/She is willing to help his/her friend in any circumstances. - Make up sentences using new words. 16’ Whole class, individual and pair work: - Ss read the text and guess the meaning of the words basing on the contexts in the sentences. - Exchange the answers with other friends. Read the text carefully and try to summarize it in Ss’ words then search through the list of the main ideas provided in the task to find the most suitable one. 10’ Whole class, individual and pair work: - Students should read for specific information like a reason. Exchange the ideas with other friends. Answers: 1. The first quality for true friendship is unselfishness… 2. Because they take up an interest with enthusiasm, but they are… 3.
