As far back as 700 B.C, man has talked about children to be cared for by wolves

Romulus and Remus, the legend twin founders of Rome; were purported to have been cared for

by wolves It is believed that why a she-wolf loses her litter, she seeks a human child to take its place This seeming preposterous idea did not become credible until the late nineteenth century

when a French doctor actually had found a naked ten-year-old boy wandering in the woods He

did not walk erect, could not speak intelligibly, or could lie relate to people He only growled and

stared of them Finally the doctor won the boy's confidence and began to work with them After

many long years of devoted and patient instruction, the doctor was able to have the boy to clothe and feed himself, recognize and utter a number of word, as well as write letters and form words

B / Read the text and choose the best answer :

The planet Earth is 4600 million years old It is difficult for us to think about such an enormous length of time because it has little meaning for us We can, however simplify idea to make it more understandable We can compare the planet Earth to a person of forty-six years of age Nothing is known about the first seven years of this person's life Very little information exists about the middle period either It was only at the age of forty-two that the Earth began to flower Dinosaurs and great reptiles did not appear until one year ago When the planet was forty-five mammals only arrived eight months ago In the middle of last week, man-like apes became ape-like men and began to communicate with each other Last weekend, the Ice Age covered the Earth Modern man has only been around for four hours During the last hour man discovered agriculture The Industrial revolution and the rise of large cities began just sixty seconds ago

During that short time, modern man has made a rubbish of the Earth In one minute, he has increased his numbers to terrible proportions and has caused the death of hundreds of species

of animals He has robbed and destroyed the planet in his search for fuels Now he stands, like a violent spoilt child delighted at the speed of his rise to power, on the edge of the final mass destruction and of killing all the life which exists in the solar’s system

1 It would appear that the main danger ahead is that

A) man will use up all the fuels

B) more species of animal may die out

C) man will destroy everything on Earth

D) there will be a population explosion

2 The author is mainly interested in

A) the effects of farming

B) the period before the last Ice Age

C) what has happened since the Industrial Revolution

D) the time when man first evolved from apes

3 The author's general view of man seems to be that

A) he has no right to be so destructive

B) he will be able to control the environment

C) he has learned a lot from past mistakes

D) he has been the most successful animal

4 The passage tells us that

Trang 5

A) life on Earth began relatively recently

B) a great deal is known about how the Earth were created

C) more is known about the first part of the Earth's life than the middle part

D) scientists are well-informed about the middle part of the Earth's life

5 We are informed by the author that

A) the dinosaurs appeared during the middle period

B) mammals and great reptiles both appeared at the same time

C) ape-like men appeared before the last Ice Age

D) there were more than forty-five kinds of great reptiles

C / You are going to read a passage about arts Some paragraphs have been removed from the article Choose from the paragraphs A – G the one which fits each gap (1-5) There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use There is an example at the beginning (0)

Looking at Art

Art communicates to us primarily through our eyes We look at art, and we try to find some meaning in the experience If we are to begin to think about art more seriously, we might

do well to become more aware of the process of seeing itself

0

E

Science tells us that seeing is a mode of perception, which is the recognition and interpretation of sensory data – in other words, how information comes in our eyes (ears, nose, taste buds, fingertips), and what we make of it

1

We can take great pleasure in merely looking at art, just as we take pleasure in the view

of a distant mountain range or watching the sun set over the ocean But art, unlike nature, is a human creation

2

The understanding of process – the how – often contributes quite a lot to our appreciation

of art

3

Knowing the place of a work of art in history – what went before and came after – can also deepen your understanding Artists learn to make art by studying the achievements of the past and observing the efforts of their contemporaries They adapt ideas to serve their own needs and then bequeath those ideas to future generations of artists The more you know about this living current of artistic energy, the more interesting each work of art will become

4

An artist may create a specific work for any of a thousand reasons An awareness of the

why may give some insights as well Looking at Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, it might help you

to know that Van Gogh was intrigued by the belief that people journeyed to a star after their

Trang 6

death, and that there they continued their lives “Just as we take the train to get to Tarascon or Rouen”, he wrote in a letter, “we take death to reach a star”

5

But no matter how much you study, Van Gogh’s painting will never mean for you exactly what it meant for him, nor should it An artist’s work grows from a lifetime of experiences, thoughts, and emotions; no one else can duplicate them exactly Great works of art hold many meanings The greatest of them seem to speak anew to each generation and to each attentive observer

6

A It is one of the many ways we express oursselves and attempt to communicate A work

of art is the product of human intelligence, and we can meet it with our own intelligence on equal footing This is where study comes in

B If you understand why painting in watercolor may be different from painting in oil, why clay responds differently to the artist’s hands than does wood or glass, why a stone building has different structural needs than one made of poured concrete – you will have a richer appreciation of the artist’s expression

C In visual perception our eyes take in information in the form of the light patterns; the brain pocesses these patterns to give them meaning The machanics of perception work much the same way for everyone, yet in a given situation we do not all see the same things

D The most important thing is that some works of art come to mean something for you,

that your own experiences, thoughts, and emotions find a place them, for then you will have made them live

E What is it to look?

F The tree that rises so dramatically in the foreground of the painting is a cypress, which has aften served as a symbol of both death and eternal life This knowledge might help you to understand why Van Gogh felt so strongly about the night sky, and what his painting might have meant to him

G Working backwards, on this basis, they constructed a table of historical givergence.Using this kind of table, estimates have been given for the possible point of divergence of the languages in many of the world’s families

H For example, Matisse assumed that his audience would know that Venus was the ancient Roman goddess of love But he also hoped that they would be familiar with one Venus

in particular, a famous Greek statue known as the Venus de Milo Knowing the Greek work

deepens our pleasure in Matisse’s version, for we see that in “carving” his Venus out of a sheet

of white paper, he evokes the way a long- ago sculptor carved her out of a block of white marble
