(5 pts) The brain is the most amazing part of our body and despite all medical research nobody really understands everything about it. But just like our bodies it needs to be cared for in ways that can be quite simple. Getting a good night’s sleep, eating a balanced diet and taking deep breaths are all important methods of looking after both for your body and your brain. Many people think their brain will slow down with age and their memory will get worse as a result. The truth is, just like your body, you can also improve your mind. I’ve found I can improve my memory by imaging what I need to remember. For example, if I’m going shopping and I need bread, milk and a birthday card for my brother, I imagine a loaf of bread, a carton of milk with a cow on the front and a birthday card with a football on it. The same kind of method can be used with important dates. If you have a picture in your mind with of a particular event it’s much easier to remember than just a like number on a calendar. Another way of improving your mind is to make sure you regularly visit new places and have new experiences. Personally I find learning Spanish is a great way to keep the brain working, but communication in any language is important. Having a conversation is so much better for your brain than staring at a computer screen or at other people talking on TV. 56. What is the writer’s main aim in writing the text? What does the writer say about the brain? A. It should be treated in similar way to our bodies. B. Not enough medical research is being done on it. C. It definitely becomes less quick when we are older. D. It ages faster than our bodies. 59. What does the writer say about her own memory? A. It has been possible to make it better. B. She finds objects more difficult to remember than numbers. C. It has got worse over the years. D. She often forgets birthdays. 60. What is the best title for the text? A. Easy ways to develop your mind B. The latest research into the brain C. The amazing power of memory D. How to remember things you thought you’d forgotten B. Choose the word or phrase (A, B, C, or D) that best fits each blank space. (15 pts) The Norwegian Government is doing its (76) best to keep the growth of the oil industry under control. A new law (77) has limited exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline; production limits have been laid (78) down; and oil companies are not allowed to employ more than a limited (79) number of foreign workers. But the oil industry has had a (80) way of getting over such problems, and few people believe that the government will be (81) able to hold things back for long. As one Norwegian politician said last week: “We will soon change (82) beyond all recognition.” Ever since the war, the Government has been (83) carrying out a programme of development in the area north of the Arctic Circle. During the past few years this program has had a great (84) deal/amount of success: Tromso has been built up (85) into a local capital with a university, a large hospital and a wealthy industry. But the oil industry has (86) already started drawing people south, and within a few years the (87) whole northern policy could be in ruins. The effects of the development of the oil industry are not (88) limited to the north, however. With nearly 100 (89) percent of employment, everyone can see a situation developing in which the service industries and the tourist industry will lose most of their (90) workers to the oil industry.
