Date: Jan 25 th , 2011 UNIT 7 : SAVING ENERGY Period: 8 LESSON 3: READ I. Aim : - After the lesson, students will be able to know more how North American and European countries to save money and natural resources. II. Language contents: - Vocabulary: (n) consumer, luxury, necessity, bulb, scheme, category , innovation, conserve. (a) efficiency (adv) ultimately - Grammar : III. Techniques: - Questions – Answers Prediction , Chatting, Rub out and remember IV. Teaching aids: - Cassette, tape V. Procedures : Teacher’s and Students’ activities Content Teacher uses an electricity bill and a water bill to ask students. Ss answer the teacher’s questions T corrects, then gives Ss the marks 1. Warm up /marks * Chatting: T : What’s this? (It’s a water bill …) How much is your family’s water bill? How much is your family’s electricity bill? Do you think it is enormous? Are your parents worried about that? What should you do? Do you want to know how the people in other countries save energy? T explains the vocabulary Ss learn the new words T uses “Rub out and remember” to check vocabulary T gives students two questions and ask them to discuss with their partners to predict the answers. 2. What do they do to spend less on lingting? T plays the tape once Ss listen 3. While-reading * Reading and checking Lesson plan : English 9 Nguyen Kim Phuong Have students read the text ( page 60 – 61) to check their prediction. T corrects Read for the main ideas: Have students read the text again and do exercise 5a. (Students have to work in groups to choose the best summary of the passage) T corrects Have students work in pairs to find out the answers Ss give feedback. T calls on some pairs to perform before the class. The other students correct - Answer key: 1.No, they don’t. They think electricity, gas, water are not luxuries but necessities. 2.Yes, they do. Western consumers are interested in products that will not only work effectively but also save money. 2. We can use energy saving bulbs instead of ordinary 100- watt light bulbs to spend less on lighting. 3. She will pay US$2 for lighting if she uses two energy-saving bulbs instead 4. The labeling scheme helps the consumers know how much energy efficiency each model has, compared with other appliances in the same category 5. Because by saving energy, we can save money and conserve the Earth’s resources. -Ask students to work in groups, choosing a secretary then discuss the ways to spend less on lighting. The secretary from each group has to write the ideas on the posters. - Have students stick their posters on the wall. (Students go around the class, read other groups’ posters). - Ss give feedback. 4. Post-reading * Discussion : + Topic : The way to spend less on lighting * Suggested answers : - Use energy saving bulbs instead of ordinary 100- watt light bulbs. - Turn off the lights before leaving the rooms. - Use household appliances properly to save energy (follow the instructions) - Keep refrigerator door closed. ………………………………………………………… ………… T writes the home assignment on the board 5.
