PHU LOC HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH SECTION LESSON PLAN UNIT 14 – THE WORLD CUP PERIOD 5: LANGUAGE FOCUS Date: April 15 th 2011 Teacher: Tôn Nữ Thanh Chung Class: 10/2 period 4 * Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - pronounce correctly two sounds /g/ and /k/ - differentiate “Will” and “ Be going to” and practice using them * Teaching aids: textbook, projector, pictures Teaching Procedure WARM UP (5 minutes): Kim’s Game - Divide the class into 2 teams A & B - Give instructions: I will show some pictures. Look at the pictures and then go to the board and write down as many words as you can. Which team having more correct words will win the game. - Check instructions: Ask Ss some questions: + What are you going to do? + How can you win the game? - T shows some pictures - Let Ss play the game - Check the answers and announce the winner Lead – in: (2 minutes) Ask Ss: + Which consonant do four words: tiger, glass, gift, dog have in common? Ss answer: /g/ + Which consonant do four words: school, cooking, monkey, cat have in common? Ss answer: /k/ T: So, which sounds are we going to learn today? Ss: /g/ and /k/ T: very good. Today we will learn to pronounce the sounds /g/ and /k/ UNIT 14 THE WORLD CUP – LANGUAGE FOCUS I. PRONUNCIATION: (8 minutes) 1. Practice the sounds /g/ and /k/: (3 minutes) - Show some words containing these two sounds - T models - Ask Ss to listen and repeat chorally then individually 2. Practice these sentences: (5 minutes) - Get Ss to open their books page 150 - T models - Have some individual Ss read the sentences - Correct Ss’ mistakes in pronunciation if any II. GRAMMAR (28 minutes) 1. Presentation: (15 minutes) - Show some pictures and give the examples - Use eliciting questions to help Ss realize the difference between “Will” and “Be going to” a. Will vs. Going to Example 1: In a restaurant… Waiter: Do you like beer or wine? Joe: Well, I will have beer. T makes question: Is Joe’s decision made at the time she speaks to the waiter or before that? Ss answer (they can answer in Vietnamese.) Example 2: A: Oh, I don’t have any money with me! B: Do you? Don’t worry. I will lend you some. T makes questions: + Does B know A doesn’t have any money before A speaks to B? + Is B’s decision to lend A some money spontaneous or made beforehand? T elicits the conclusion: WILL is used when we decide to do something at the time of speaking. Example 3: Helen: There’s a great movie on at Cao Thang theater tonight! Tina: Oh, I know. I’m going to see it tonight. T makes question: Is Tina’s decision to see the film made before or at the time she says to Helen? - Elicit the conclusion: BE GOING TO is used when we talk about actions planned before the time of speaking. - Ask Ss to tell the difference between “Will” and “Be going to” /g/ /g/ group group game game together together again again goal goal dog dog Uruguay Uruguay Margaret Margaret /k/ club kick cup ticket school because compete weak b. Will: MAKING PREDICTIONS Example 4: A: Susan has been studying very hard for her exams. B: I think she will pass the exams easily. - T asks: Is B’s prediction a personal opinion or based on present evidences? Ss: It’s just a personal opinion.(They may answer in Vietnamese.)-> T: That’s right - T elicits the conclusion by asking Ss: + What can we infer from the example above? + Is “WILL” used when we predict the future based on evidence or not? Conclusion: WILL is used when we predict the future based on personal opinions or experiences rather than specific evidences. • We often use “will” with: I’m sure, I’m certain, I(don’t) think , I know, I hope… Example 5: A: Look at the black clouds in the sky. B: It is going to rain. - T elicits the conclusion: BE GOING TO is used when we predict the future based on present evidence. - T asks Ss to tell the difference between “Will” and “Be going to” when predicting the future. c. Will: MAKING OFFERS Example 6: Nam and Long go to watch football. After the football match, Nam feels very hot and tired. Nam: It’s so hot. Long: I will open the window. - T elicits the language function of “Will” in this example. - Conclusion: “Will” is also used for making an offer. “Be going to” isn’t used with this function. * Summary: T asks Ss to say all the differences between “Will” and “Be going to” again 2. Practice: (5 minutes) Controlled practice - Ask Ss to work in pairs - Distribute handouts to the pairs - Give instructions if necessary - Let Ss do the exercise - Go around to give help - Call some representatives of the pairs to give the answers - Check with the whole class and give the answer keys Exercise: Make complete sentences based on the prompts, using “will” or “be going to” 1. If you have problems with your homework, ask John. I / sure / he / help / you. 2. A: Where are you going? Are you going shopping? B: Yes / I / buy / something / dinner 3. A: I’m so thirsty! B: I / bring / you / drink 4. A: Your car is too dirty! B: Yeah, I know . I / wash / it / tomorrow 5. You don’t need your umbrella today. I/ not/ think / it / rain. * Keys: 1. I’m sure he will help you. 2. Yes, I am going to buy something for dinner. 3. I’ll bring you something to drink. / I’ll bring you a drink. 4. I’m going to wash it tomorrow. 5. I don’t think it will rain. 3. Production: (8 minutes) Game: Lucky Number - Give instructions: There are 6 numbers on the screen. You will choose any number you like. There are pictures and eliciting questions behind each number. Look at the pictures, and the questions to make sentences using “Will” or “Be going to”. With each correct sentence, your team will get 10 marks. If you get a lucky number, you will get 10 marks without making the sentences. Which team with more marks will be the winner. - Check instructions - Divide the class into two teams - Let Ss play the game - Give feedback and show the correct sentences - Decide the winner * Keys: Number 1: I will carry it for you. / I will help you with it. Number 2: Okay, I will buy you an ice-cream. / I will buy you one. Number 3: Lucky Number Number 4: She is going to have a baby. Number 5: I am going to buy a mobile phone. Number 6: An is going to have a birthday party tonight. III.
