Dao động là một chuyển động qua lại và có giới hạn quanh một vị trí cân bằng (vị trí mà vật đứng yên). 2. Dao động tuần hoàn là dao động mà trạng thái chuyển động của vật được lặp lại như cũ sau những khoảng thời gian bằng nhau. 3. Chu kì thời gian thực hiện một dao động toàn phần (khoảng thời gian ngắn nhất giữa hai lần vật đi qua một vị trí xác định với cùng chiều chuyển động). 4. Tần số số dao động toàn phần thực hiện trong một giây. 5. Dao động điều hòa là dao động tuần hoàn được mô tả bằng một định luật dạng cosin (hay sin) theo thời gian. 6. Dao động tự do (dao động riêng) là dao động của hệ xảy ra chỉ dưới tác dụng của nội lực, mỗi hệ dao động tự do đều có một tần số góc riêng 0 nhất định. 7. Dao động tắt dần - là dao động có “biên độ” giảm dần theo thời gian; dao động tắt dần không có tính tuần hoàn; sự tắt dần càng nhanh nếu lực cản của môi trường càng lớn. - khi ma sát nhỏ, dao động tắt dần có thể coi gần đúng là tuần hoàn với tần số góc bằng tần số góc riêng 0 của hệ. 8. Dao động duy trì là dao động có được khi cung cấp thêm năng lượng bù lại sự tiêu hao do ma sát mà không làm thay đổi tần số góc riêng của hệ. 9.
