LESSON PLAN Unit 12: The Asian Games Period: Speaking Time allotted 45mins Class: 11B3 Date: Friday March 11 th , 2011. School: Phan Dang Luu High School Teacher in charge: Tống Nữ Kiều Thu Training teacher: Phan Thị Ái Vân  Aims: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - improve speaking skills. - get more information about the Asian Games. - express their own ideas favorite athletes and games. - know the way of pair-work and group-work.  Teaching aids: textbook, pictures, posters, handouts…  Anticipated problems: - Some Ss may not have enough words to talk about this topic. - Some Ss are confident enough to communicate with other Ss.  Procedure: Time/ Stages Activities/ steps Work arrangement Warm up (5mins) Game: Guess names - T gives instruction: + you will see pictures of some sports, and then find the names of the sports in number order of the pictures. + in 2mins, if your team find more correct names, you will be the winner and receive a gift. - T checks instruction. - T chooses 2 teams. Each team consists of 4 students. - T gives some names (see appendix) to 2 teams. - T shows the pictures (see appendix). - T lets Ss play the game. - T gives feedbacks and rewards the winner. 1 Lead-in (1mins) - T asks “What sports have been introduced in the Asian Games?”  Expected answer: basketball, shooting, football, weightlifting… “Today, we will talk about the Asian Games”. However, at first, I want to introduce some vocabularies. Pre- speaking (8mins)  Teaching vocabulary: 1. bodybuilding (n) : môn thể hình Eliciting technique: picture 2. shooting (n) : môn bắn sung Eliciting technique: picture 3. billiards (n) : môn bi a Eliciting technique: picture 4. karatedo: (n) : võ karate Eliciting technique: picture 5. medal (n) : huy chương + gold medal (n ) : huy chương vàng + silver medal (n) : huy chương bạc + bronze medal (n) : huy chương đồng Eliciting technique: picture  Steps of teaching vocabulary: + T elicits vocabulary.  Expected answer + T models vocabulary. + T lets the class repeat chorally. + T lets some students repeat individually.  Checking vocabulary: Matching ( see appendix) Brainstorming - T asks Ss: “When you talk about The Asian Games, what will you talk about?” 2  Expected answer: - place (host country) 2. time 3. number of sports 4. number of countries 5. medals … While- speaking (16mins) o Activity1: Making dialogue - T sticks a simple dialogue (see appendix) on the board. - T models it with one student. - T elicits the language: “What tense do you use to talk about events in the past?”  Expected answer: simple past tense - T asks Ss to work in pairs and make a dialogue with information in the handout. - Ss work in pairs in 3mins. - T gives handouts. MEDALS WON BY VIETNAM (at 14 th Asian Games held in Busan, Korea) Sports Gold Medals Silver Medals Bronze Medals Bodybuilding 1 1 Example: “At the 14 th Asian Games held in Busan, Korea, in bodybuilding, the Vietnamese athletes won one gold medal and one bronze medal.” - T asks Ss to work in groups. - T asks groups to use information in the handout (see appendix) to talk about the results of Vietnamese athletes at 14 th Asian Games in 3mins. - T checks instruction. - T gives the handouts to Ss. - T lets groups do the task. - T goes around the class to give help. - After 3mins, T calls some groups to show their reports. - T gives feedbacks. Post- speaking (10mins) o Activity 3 - T divides the class into 2 groups: Group A and Group B - T gives instruction: + Group A: “You receive handout A, and then read the passage carefully in 3mins. Finally, you must answer Group B’s questions.” + Group B: “You receive handout B. Firstly, you must depend on 4 some suggested words to make question sentences in 3mins. Secondly, you must ask Group A to get information and take note it into your handout. Finally, you must report what you take note.” - T checks instruction. - T gives handouts. - T lets Ss do. - T goes around giving help. - After 3mins, T calls Ss to ask and answer. - T gives feedbacks. * Handouts (see appendix) Homework and Evaluation (5mins) Homework: - Learn vocabularies by heart. Evaluation: - Ss give their ideas and feeling about the class. - T comments on Ss’ learning attitude during the class. 5 APPENDIX Game: Guess names Pictures: 6 Pictures for eliciting vocabularies: 7 Activity1: Making dialogue A: Where were the first Asian Games held? B: In India. A: When were the first Asian Games taken place? B: in 1951 A: How many countries took part in the Games? B: Eleven. A How many sports were there at the Games? B: Six. China was the host country. There were 45 nations taking part in the Games. The 16 th Asian Games attracted about 14.000 participants. The athletes competed in 42 different sports such as badminton, athletics, volleyball, fencing, wushu, judo, weightlifting… After waiting years, Chinese chess was taken to the official competing program. 350 Vietnamese athletes competed in 27 sports.
