LESSON PLAN Unit 12 : The Asian Games Period 1 : Reading Time allotted: 45 minutes Class : 11B1 Date : Monday, March 7 th , 2011. School : Phan Dang Luu High School Teacher in charge: Tống Nữ Kiều Thu Training teacher: Hoàng Thị Hoài Giang  Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - read the reading passage in silent. - develop their reading skills: + scan for specific detail + skim for specific information - know more some basic information about the Asian Games. - feel more interested in expressing their ideas about some sports played in the Asian Games. - develop their working skills in groups, pairs or individually.  Teaching aids: textbook, pictures, posters.  Procedure: Stages/ Times Activities Work arrangement Warm- up (5 minutes) Game: Kim’s game - T divides the students into 2 groups: Group 1 and Group 2. - T tells students they will play a Kim’s game - T gives some instructions: I will show you 6 pictures. You will try to remember the names of 6 pictures. After I show all 6 Group work pictures, students from 2 groups will take turns to go to the board and write down the names. The group that has more right answers the most quickly will win the game. - T uses the technique: STEP- BY- STEP to check the instructions. - T shows the pictures. - T lets students to write their answers. - T gives feedback and declares the winner. 1. fencing 2. football 3. volleyball 4. basketball 5. swimming 6. wrestling Lead- in: (1 minute) I have just given some sports’ names. And those sports events were played at the Asian Games. Today, we are going to read the text about THE ASIAN GAMES Reading Whole class Pre- reading (8 minutes) * Useful language: Useful language Techniques aquatic sport picture, explanation advance (v) example, explanation athlete (n) picture, explanation sports facilities picture, explanation solidarity (n) translation compete (v) picture, explanation * Step of presenting useful language: + T reads the new word out clearly. + T elicits the new word. + T models it 2 times. + T lets students repeat it in chorus 2 times. + T lets students repeat it individually 2 times. + T writes the new word on the board. + T uses “Leave it out” to check the new word. + T asks students to copy the new words in the notebook. Whole class, individual work While- reading (16 minutes) Activity 1: Table Completion - T gives some instructions: Work in pairs. Complete the table below in 3 minutes. Year Events (1) The 1 st Asian Games began in New Delhi, India. 1954 Boxing, shooting and wrestling were added at (2) … (3)…… Tennis, volleyball, table tennis and hockey were added at the 3 rd Asian Games held in Tokyo, Japan. 1998 (4)……… were introduced at the 13 th Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. (5)…… The 14 th Asian Games were in Busan, Korea. - T uses the technique: STEP- BY- STEP to check the instructions. - T lets students complete the table in 3 minutes. - T calls on some students to write their answers on the board. - T gives feedback.  Suggested answers: 1. 1951 (paragraph 2; 5 th sentence) 2. the 2 nd Asian Games in Manila, the Philippines (paragraph 2; 8 th sentence) 3. 1958 (paragraph 2; 8 th sentence) 4. squash, rugby, fencing and mountain biking (paragraph 2; 9 th sentence) 5. 2002 (paragraph 2; 1 st sentence) Activity 2: Answer the questions - T gives some instructions: Work individually. Read the Group work. pair work reading passage again and answer questions given in the handouts in 5 minutes. - T uses the technique: STEP- BY- STEP to check the instructions. - T delivers handouts. Activity 2: Answer the questions 1. What is the purpose of the Asian Games? 2. How many participants took part in the 14 th Asian Games? 3. Which sports events were introduced at the first Games? And which sports events were added at the 2 nd Games? 4. In which sports events did the Vietnamese athletes win gold medals at the Busan Games? - T reminds students to pay attention to key words in the questions and in the reading passage. - T gives model to students. - T lets students read the passage again and answer the questions in 5 minutes. - T calls on some students to read out their answers and write their answers on the board and gives feedback. Feedback: 1. The purposes of the Asian Games are to develop intercultural knowledge and friendship within Asian; to build, to deepen friendship and solidarity; also to test strength and sports skill of participants. (paragraph 1) 2. 9919 participants took part in the 14 th Asian Games (paragraph 3) 3. Basketball, cycling, football, aquatic sports, athletes and weightlifting were introduced at the 1 st Asian Games. (paragraph 2) Boxing, shooting, and wrestling were added at the 2 nd Asian Games. (paragraph 2) 4. Vietnamese athletes won the gold medals in bodybuilding, billiards and women’s karatedo at the Games in Busan, Korea. (paragraph 3). Post- reading (10 minutes) Activity 3: Role- play preparation: 5 minutes presentation: 5 minutes (3 pairs) - T gives some instructions: “Work in pair. You will be an MC of Sport News on radio and the guest. Ask and answer questions about the Asian Games in 5 minutes.” - T uses the technique SAY- DO- CHECK to check the instructions. - T delivers the handouts to students. Card for MC of Sport News: Card for MC of Sport News: - Greeting (Hello/ Hi!) - Introduce the program, guess (This is Sport News on radio VOV1. And we are glad to talk to …….) - Ask the purpose of the Asian Games (What/the purpose of the Asian Games?) - The 1 st Asian Games: + Time: When/ the first Asian Games? + Place: Where/ the first Asian Games? + Sports events (Which sports events/ play) - Greeting (Thank you for coming there.
