Technology is changing the way people learn. It is rarely to find a language class that doesn’t use some form of technology. Also, in recent years, technology plays an important role in supporting and enhancing language learning and the role of the teacher is to present information. Some people concern that technological advances will replace language teachers soon. In my opinion, I don’t agree with that in order to use technology effectively, it needs a teacher who manages class and interacts with students. Technology helps teacher rather than removed them because the presence of teacher is indispensable and some common troubles about financial and the using way usually occurs. Firstly, technology plays a role in classroom but it can’t play a determining role. Technology can provide all the information they have, without considering that the student understands it or not . No technology can understand student’s problems and difficulties. Teacher is a person who supervises students and makes them learn efficiency as a facilitator. For instance, we download some materials for TOEIC but we don’t which one to start. Teacher plays a significant part to guide our study and they can tell us Word 1160 Page 2 where begin with, what we should do. Teachers give us the direction to work in team or individual and solve some hard questions in language class directly. Furthermore, technology is a tool that can be used by teacher, it can’t motivate student as teacher. According to Molteno (2013), “well trained teachers are still need to adjust the lesson to learner needs and provide more comprehensive feedback to students, give them a reason or intentive to study a factor that is essential to learning”. Students can learn from language online but teachers use body language and can explain things easier than technology can. Also, second language learners’ learning situations are various and ever changing. Learning is about trying , making mistakes and having someone to guide when losing the way and making inspiration. The teacher will create enthusiasm and passion for students. Pamela Wright (2013) showed that “teachers are role models creating trust and inspiring students in an environment where learning occurstechnology alone can not offer these skill ”. Shortly, the interaction between language teachers and students are the core of teaching process ; technology has dramtically changed the role of the teach but it will not replace teachers. Secondly, in case technology become a new basic requirement, it has many trouble about purchase price and how to use it. Learners have to have any thing involves the technology which support to studying language . For example, in order to take part in an online English course , they have at least a smatphone, an ipad, a computer or an cassette that connect to Internet. They need to listen tasks or foreign songs, speak foreign language to other leaners, write letter or reading comprehesion, all in technology. It’s difficulty that every learner have it because many people don’t have the Word 1160 Page 3 financial ability to buy, especially lowincome students usually cannot afford. It will cause unfair educational conditions for those poor schools and students .The hight cost for using language solfware or join in an online course also fills psychological concerns of leaners. Besides, when a traditional class with teachers is changed, it takes a long process for students to have a training in the use of technology. “Learner needs a basic technology knowledge before applying technology to assist second language learning” (ChengChieh Lai, William Allan Kritsonis, 2006) . Previously, students are familiar with using textbook, blackboard, models and write an essay in the paper. But now if technology is prominent, learners have to be trained to know how to write an email or an essay online, how to use a complex solfware about foreign language. It focuses on studying technology more than language. Consequently, it has many proplem with learners when technological advances is decided to remove language teachers. Teacher is still a reasonable choice for all learners. There are some certainly a group of people who suppose that technology should replace language teacher because of convinient and usefullness. However, technology is made by human being, it is still imperfect. According to ChengChieh Lai and William Allan Kritsonis, “current technology mainly deals with reading, listening, and writing skills. Even though some speaking programs have been developed recently, their functions are still limited”. It should be able to diagnose a student’s problems with pronunciation, syntax, or usage by the tacher. In other words, technologies are not yet intelligent enough to be truly interactive . “Due to the limitations of computer’s artificial intelligence, computer technology is Word 1160 Page 4 unable to deal with learners’unexpected learning problems and response to learners’ question immediately as teachers do” (Mark Warschauer and Carla Meskill, 2005). People still need to put effort in developing and improving computer technology in order to assist second language learners. To sum up, technology in education get plenty of utility but it does not equate to the importance of teaching and learning language. In conclusion, all the application of technological advances become a new trend in recently language learning instructions, but technology still has its limitation and weaknesses. Learning foreign language process has many tricky problem which can make students dispiriting and undone. With some game or some funny program, it is not enough motivate and inspire for learners. The language teachers will encourage students when they struggle, and inspire them to set and reach for their goals. The technology with a metallic brain and heart can never feel sympathetic towards a student problem. However, a teacher is always there to solve our problems and always extends a hand of advice. So yes, technology advances are going to play a critical role in the future of education. But not as big role as that of a teacher. Works Cited ChengChieh Lai, William Allan Kritsonis. (2006).
