We have the widest range of specialist bre optic lighting solutions for lighting in museums, galleries and retail displays. We can supply complete systems using glass or polymer bre and we manufacture our own class leading light sources and end ttings. Being a complete manufacturer we can also make bespoke fabrications such as light tubes, rod and clamps and gantry systems all nished to blend seamlessly into their surroundings. We understand how important it is to meet deadlines and keep a project within budget. We are quality focussed, using only the highest quality raw materials. C5 bre optic lighting explained 5 Specifying bre optics Please call to discuss your requirements with a member of our sales team who will be able to give you advice on how best to achieve your lighting needs. Points to consider include: •Where the light source(s) can be physically located. They need free airow and ventilation. •Where the points of light are required as well as the distance between the light source and the points. •What sort of spread of light you require and how bright it should be in relation to ambient lighting. We can help you with these decisions and give practical advice. Accurate drawings help (preferred formats are AutoCAD or PDF). If you require a rough estimate then a brief telephone call and/or sketch may be sufcient. For major projects, our sales engineers can visit your site, demonstrate working products and take measurements. We also offer a complete, professional installation service if this is required. Why use bre optic lighting? Low UV and heat emission from the end of the bres means that sensitive items are not degraded as they could be with a conventional type of lighting. A light source with a single lamp can drive many points of light and can be located in an accessible place while the end ttings may be inside a case or at a height where re-lamping would be problematic. The reduced number of lamps required also means lower maintenance costs and reduced power usage. Controlled white light with either cool or warm colour temperature lamps are available. There is also the option for static coloured light or decorative colour changing with a number of methods of control. Components of a bre optic system 1. The light source is the projector like box which contains the lamp, ltration and all the electrical components of the system. 2. The bre optic harness conducts the light and is made of a number of bre optic cables (called tails) which are joined together at the end where the connector (the common end) ts into the light source. At the other end of the harness, each individual tail is terminated, usually with a metal ferrule, and it is here that the light emerges. 3. End ttings come in an array of different shapes and sizes to provide a decorative or discrete termination to each tail. Focusable and directional ttings are available and fabrications such as light tubes, shepherds crooks and gantries may also be used to terminate the bre. downlight ttings 6 Although this range of products are called downlight ttings, they can also be used to illuminate upwards or from the side with great effect. These ttings can be used individually to give a spot light or in multiples to wash an area or item with light. Ideal for use within showcases, they are focusable and some types are also directional. All these ttings, with the exception of the UFO27H and UFO28H are mounted using push-t spring clips to hold the tting in place in the mounting surface. The UFO27H and UFO28H are threaded hermetic ttings which are mounted through a 38mm cutout and are secured by a retaining nut on the back. Available in three diameters, 32mm, 38mm and 52mm, they consist of an aluminium tube which holds end emitting bres at close spacings to give an even light. The points of light can be staggered if required to give light coverage to a wider area. Light Tubes can be supplied as a straight tube with the bre optic tails emerging from one end or as a u-shaped gantry which can be surface mounted (see page 13). A range of mounting brackets are also available which allow for the horizontal or vertical mounting of tubes. When these are used, the tube is secured with a grub screw which allows for easy rotation and positioning. Light Tubes can be custom painted in-house and are manufactured to order at the sizes specied. 1. The Royal Institute, London 2. Optics manufactures a complete range of light sources for fibre optic lighting These units are manufactured by UFO to exacting standards and are of durable construction The two main types of light source available are defined by the lamp technologies they use tungsten halogen and metal halide All of our light sources use the industry standard 30mm fibre connecting port This allows the use of UFO light
