Lesson plan 8 Period 21 Week 7, date: October 19 th , 2007 Lesson 1: Getting started , Listen and read I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Sts will be able to: - Know the life of Vietnamese people about 100 years ago. - Distinguish the fact and opinion. 1. Knowledge: - Vocabulary: great-grandma, folktale, traditional stories - Grammar: used to + bare Infinitive. 2. Skills : +Main skills : listening, reading +Sub-skills : speaking , writing 3. Educational aims: - Know the difference between the life in the past and the life in the present and appreciate the tradition of Vietnamese people. II. Methods and techniques: Integrated, mainly communicative, pair-work, group- work. III. Teaching aids: Pictures and cassettes IV. Procedure: What the Teacher and Students do Content 1.warm up (4’) Getting Started: Look at the picture and write the names of the things that do not belong to the past. ( pair-work) 2. Presentation (10’) T introduces the situation before they listen. Ss listen to the tape and note what Nga’s grandmother used to do in the past. Set the scene: We are going to listen to a Vocabulary • great-grandma: grandmother, grandfather • folktale (n): = traditional stories (+) S+ used to + bare infinitive (-) S + didn’t use to + bare infinitive. (?) Did + S + use to + bare infinitive? 1. Practice the dialogue with a partner. 2. Ask and answer the questions 51 Lesson plan 8 dialogue between Nga and her grandmother about the things that Nga’s grandmother used to do when she was a young girl. You listen to the tape and write the names of the things she had to do. Some Ss read what they have noted. T uses pictures to elicit and explain new words Practice pronunciation. Check vocabulary. 3. Practice (20’) 1. Ss work in pairs to practice the dialogue. Some pairs practice in front of the class. 2. They work in pairs to ask and answer the questions. They practice asking and answering before the class and write their answers on the board. T gives the correct answers. 3. T explains Fact or Opinion. T encourages Ss to give more examples. Ss find each statement F or O then compare with others. T gives the correct answers. 4. Production (8’) Group-work: list the games which children don’t play now. Use “ Used to”. Explanation: 1. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Sts will be able to: - Express the difference between the life in the past and the life in the present. - Understand the main idea of the story to choose the best moral lesson. 1. Knowledge: Vocabulary: lay, discover, excitedly, in amazement. Grammar: used to, present simple. 2. Skills : +Main skills : listening, speaking +Sub-skills : reading , writing 3. Educational aims: “ Don’t be foolish and greedy” 53 Lesson plan 8 II. Methods and techniques: Integrated, mainly communicative, pair-work, group- work. III. Teaching aids: Pictures and cassettes IV. Procedure: What the Teacher and Students do Content 1. Recap (4’) Make a short conversation then answer these questions. Questions: 1. Did Nga’s grandmother go to school? Why? 2. What did Nga’s great-grandmother use to do? Warm up: Play a game: Happy Memories • What is your favorite childhood memory? • What sports or games did you use to play when you were younger? • Did you use to have a nickname? • Did you use to cry a lot when you were a small child? Speak Pre-speaking Divide the class into 2 groups, each group lists what they can see in each picture. They state what they can see before the class. Instructions: Now you work in pairs, looking at the picture and the words listened, talk about the differences between life in the past and now by using used to. While-speaking 1. Ss work in pairs and discuss the difference between the life in the past and the life in the present. Feedback Speak Picture 1: - small houses - people work on paddy field - children play at home - stack of traw Picture 2: - big houses and buildings - cars - shop - TV - traffic lights 1. Talk about the way things used to be and the way they are now. Suggested answers: People used to live in small houses. Now they live in big houses and buildings. People used to walk to travel. Now they can go by car, motorbike There didn’t use to be electricity. Now there is electricity everywhere. People used to work hard all the time. Now they have a lot of time for entertainment. Children used to play traditional games. Now they play computer games. People used to raise cattle themselves for meat. Now they buy it in the supermarket. 2. Now tell your partner about the things you used to do last year. (Ss’ answers). 54 Lesson plan 8 2. Ss work in pairs to talk about the things they used to do last year and compare to those at the present. Feedback. Post-speaking Ss list the things they used to in the past. T finds the student who had the most good habits in the past. Listen Pre-listening Questions: 1. Do you always read stories? 2. Which story impresses you most? Why? T gives new words, practice pronunciation, check vocabulary. Then T also explains 4 titles. Instructions: There are a lot of Vietnamese folktales which have precious moral lessons. We are going to listen to one of those stories. You listen to it and decide which of the following is the most suitable moral lesson. While-listening Ss listen to the tape twice then find the correct choice by taking notes. They compare with others and check. They listen the 3rd time. Ss tell the story in their own words. T gets feedback from the students. Post-listening - Ss work in a group of 4 to retell the story. - Story-telling competition: a group of 4 or 5 For example: Last year I used to go hiking with my friends. This year I go to the park to play with my friends. Last year I used to get bad marks. Now I get good marks. Listen New words - lay – laid - discover (v) = find out - excitedly (adv) - in amazement: trong sù söng sèt Listen to the story. Write the letter of the most suitable moral lesson. Answer: b. Don’t be foolish and greedy. TAPE TRANSCRIPT One a farmer lived a comfortable life with his family. His chickens laid many eggs which the farmer used to sell to buy food and clothing for his family. One day, he went to collect the eggs and discovered one of the chickens laid a gold egg. He shouted excitedly to his wife, “We are rich! We are rich!” His wife ran to him and they both look at the egg in amazement. The wife wanted more, so the husband decided to cut open all the chickens and find more gold eggs. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find any eggs. When he finished all, the chickens were dead. There were no more eggs of any kind for the foolish farmer and his greedy wife. 55 Lesson plan 8 prepare a story then a representative tells it. 5. Grammar: Past simple tense. 2. Skills : +Main skills : reading +Sub-skills : listening, speaking , writing 3. Educational aims: Ss have a good lesson from the story: Good people have happiness and luck. 56 Lesson plan 8 II. Methods and techniques: group work, pair-work, asking – answering, guessing… III. Teaching aids: Pictures and cassettes IV. Procedure: What the Teacher and Students do Content 1. Recap (4’) Tell the differences between the life in the past and the life in the present. Can you tell me the name of some stories that you remember? 3. Do you know this story? 2. Pre-reading (8’) Ordering pictures: Ss look at the pictures then arrange them into a logical story. Ss skim the story quickly and find out who Little Pea was, who Stout Nut was and whose shoes were lost. Look at the pictures. They are in the wrong order. Decide what the correct order is. Each group prepares a folktale with the main details. A representative tells it before the class.
