INTRODUCTION TO LISTENING 2 Ngo Quynh Hoa, MA STRATEGIES FOR LISTENING 1. Start listening with certain expectations about the given task. 2. Listen and identify the precise topic by discriminating key words supporting the topic. 3. Try to recognize as many words and phrases as possible connected with the topic. 4. Notice and understand parts of words as a way to determine meaning. 5. Don’t expect to understand every word. Try to get the general sense of what people are saying. Don’t panic if you “lose” the sense of what you hear – keep listening and try to pick it up again. 6. Pay attention to the speaker’s intonation. STRATEGIES FOR LISTENING 7. Listen for stressed words when people speak. Don’t worry too much about the unstressed words (articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, etc.). 8. When you listen, pay special attention whenever the speaker emphasizes or repeats points. 9. Learn to understand incomplete sentences. 10. Learn to distinguish between the main idea and supporting details when listening to a speaker. 11. Try to create a coherent text in your mind using what you know about the topic on the one hand, and about the English language on the other. 12. Be aware that not all accents in English are the same. TYPES OF LISTENING • Listening for gist (main ideas) • Listening to identify keywords • Listening for specific information and detailed meaning. • Listening to identity the attitudes and opinions of the speakers Listening Exercise • Listen the shows in English on the radio, podcasts online, etc. • Choose one of the shows based on your interest • Listen to the show for five minutes three times a week • Keep track of your listening to keep up the practice • You get a film, or listen to an English radio station, but not to watch an entire film or listen for two hours. • You should often listen, but you should listen for short periods - five to ten minutes. This should happen four or five times a week. Even if you don't understand anything, five to ten minutes is a minor investment. • However, for this strategy to work, you must not expect improved understanding too quickly. The brain is capable of amazing things if given time, you must have the patience to wait for results. If you continues this exercise over two to three months your listening comprehension skills will greatly improve.
